Post-Game Talk: Leafs beat Connor Hellebuyck 4-3, end 3 game skid in OT

We literally gave up only 4 high danger chances and only 5 last game. If people aren't satisfied with this performance defensively, then they never will.

Its not about the # of chances we gave up, that was great agreed. But just make them earn it. No softies in our zone... I am not sure if any of those soft plays ended up in dangerous chances, maybe, maybe not. Not complaining about the win, but for a deep run they have to be more solid in the d-zone with the puck.

Those advanced stats don't tell the whole truth, but do give good indicators... we played well enough to win, no doubt, but it was the Jets... lets see what Tampa, Boston or Vegas do with those soft plays.

Jets fan here. Wow what a game tonight guys. Now that was some great hockey to watch. I'd love to hopefully see Jets vs Leafs semi-finals in the north playoffs. Think these 2 teams are the best chance to finally take out those Americans. Still think we need one really good d-man and obviously vesina type goaltending from Helly to stay close against you guys. You guys over here have a great night and hopefully Saturday is just as entertaining.

Your username is definitely appropriate. He has been the best player on either team in both games.

One thing I'll give the Jets is how good Ehlers is, every time he has the puck he makes something happen. The fact that their only playing him 16:51 is crazy

With Matthews a very very close 2nd I'd say. I really like watching these 2 teams play since there both right up there with talent, instead of a blowout. See you guys Saturday night, first drinks are on you lol

Cope. The Jets underlying numbers over these two games make Belgium's defense of the Blitzkrieg look spirited and tenacious.
the Jets' underlying numbers the whole season really. 27th in cf%, and 31st in hdcf%. But they do have elite offensive talent and elite goaltending, so they're probably a lot more dangerous than they seem

I thought we played bloody well and deserved to win that game by the length of the straight we were so much better

We almost got goalied but found a way to win against an amazing net minder, that kid is ******* good

The boys should be taking plenty of pride out of that performance

WOW!! What a sassy and classy OT winner by Matthews!

I've been calling the Leafs the NHL's Harlem Globetrotters and that goal is yet more proof.

Wow what a game! I don't know what Hellebuyck is on, but I want some of that.

I'm so glad that Matthews scored there because my god, the refs basically tried to just hand the game to Winnipeg with no call on the slash at the end. Beauty goal! One of Nylander's best games ever too. Should have had multiple goals; glad he got the one on that sweet play by Tavares. Marner was great too; all the big forwards showed up. I've come around to him on the PK. His hockey IQ is too good.

Big win! Now let's win the set on Saturday. The wall has been breached. Tear it down.

take the homer shades off, hes been trash for weeks.
Personally , I’ve never ever had homer shades to the extent that I’ve substantially praised a Leaf for more than they were worth in 56 years watching and listening and following them ?
Maybe a bit I’m sure , but I pride myself in attempting to call it like I see it ..
If you’ve followed anything I’ve said about quite a few players over the years , it certainly wasn’t homerish ?
Go Leafs go
Now go set up the parade route maestro

That’s the thing. The really good goalies make saves that they shouldn’t, that’s the difference. Hellebuyck did that a bunch the last two games

yeah all star goalies STEAL games and more often than not ARE the TSN turning point. I can’t remember the last time Andersen stole a game for us. Campbell and Clutch Hutch have outright stolen games this season. Especially those back to back shutouts Vs EDM which were spectacular.

The problem with looking at save percentage alone is that you're not judging the quality of goals he's giving up. He's never going to be Helle if that's what fans are expecting. The same way Scheifele is never going to be Matthews...

I'm very quick to call a bad goal, a bad goal, or a soft goal, a soft goal. I'm no Freddy defender by any stretch of the imagination... But I'm realistic with who he is. Of the 3 Jets goals tonight, I thought only the 1st one was soft and saveable. The 2nd and 3rd goal go in the vast majority of the time, against 90% of the goalies in the league. Anderson doesn't happen to be part of the exception. Obviously.

strongly agree. It would be unwise to ignore his sub par performance because those things will rear their ugly head come playoff time- and by that time his deficiencies will be painfully obvious.

i frankly and honestly don't remember when he was the reason for a win
There was a game in Vancouver a year or two ago in which he stopped about 5 breakaways in one period. He played insane that game, but those types of performances are rare from him, unfortunately.

Stephen's post above recounting the abysmally weak goals in elimination playoff games really sums up my frustrations with Fred. I was hoping that the Columbus series would be redemption and success for Fred and the team. But after that Foudy goal, Fred's dead, baby; Fred's dead.

My only takeaway is the Leafs won in spite of Andersen’s sub par performance.

Hellebuyck: 34/38 shots .895 sv%

Andersen: 24/27 shots .889 sv%

Judging goalies is tough. Helle is clearly far better than Anderson, but despite his efforts, the dude has surrended 11 goals in his last 3 games, is 1-1-1 in that stretch, including getting pulled when he gave up 4 goals on 19 shots in Montreal... So despite his heroics, his numbers have been crap as of late.

the season is far from over. I bet Helle will finish the season with better numbers than what he currently has in the past 3 games

Clearly. My point is that even the best goalies can really have rough statistical streaks, even know the optics tell you they're playing pretty well.

That's why I want to watch and judge every goal, instead of just looking at singular statistics.
