Post-Game Talk: Leafs beat Connor Hellebuyck 4-3, end 3 game skid in OT

i want to see our numbers of high danger chances against this year,,compared to the rest of the north

cuzz,,,,, i don't see no "ton" of HDCs against this season
We are 3rd, pretty much in line with Edmonton. Van, Winnipeg, and Ottawa leak them. Van and Ottawa have been terrible, and Winnipeg has the best goalie in the division. Habs and Flames suppress them.

Dear lurking Jets fans:

Yeah, you guys had absolutely ZERO business being in this game. If Helly gets hurt, you guys are done. We know.

Thanks for stopping by.

A goalie is part of the team. Our goalie is quite a bit better than whatever you have. Grats on the OT win though lol. Maybe this will stop the dramatic “What is the value of Andersen?!” for a couple of days. :)

The problem then becomes how many keepers do you leave in. Tried to make it around 30 (which makes the most sense) but even expanding it makes it look pretty much the same.

2016-2019 with 5000+ minutes and he ranks 10th out of 40 but his rubber against is still a the top and his 11000+ minutes looks really insane.

2019-current with 2000+ minutes and he ranks 29th out of 44 for save% with the much improved D.
ball park? 35+ starts,,is in the range of split duties IMO for last season

10 starts this season,,all ball park ish

Legit think the Jets are a Hellebuyck injury away from being on the California teams level.

Yup lol, they have some good forwards, I like Morrissey as well but their 5 on 5 is one of the worst I have ever seen. I dunno what Maurice is doing there lol. With the forwards they have the team should not be that confused out there, no system to their game, no defense and can't break out once we enter the zone.

But a PPG player is what he's been his entire career. The Leafs knew exactly what they were getting and chose to pay him what they did. He's produced at or above the level he did prior to arriving in Toronto. The stats bare that out.

It's never the player's job to turn down the money offered to them. It's the team's job to evaluate if a player is worth what he is asking and walk away when it's not... Tavares had a well developed resume when he got here. To suddenly expect him to become something he has never been is not any more rational than the Leafs fans that suddenly expect that Anderson is going to out play Helle on most nights... Not happening.
it's not the players job to turn down money but he doesn't get a pass on the expectations that come with a 11m dollar salary

he's pacing for only 23g and about 70pts which puts him behind like 50 players so his production is lower than his norm and much worse when compared to his peers

we should have a cake walk through to the semi's but we're going to eventually meet up with another high quality team and if we're not getting consistent production out of our num 2 center the chances of advancing are slim and that's what's important , not protecting poor Johnny from any criticism

Team D this year:

Shots Against/60: 8th fewest in the NHL
High Danger Chances Against/60: 14th fewest in the NHL
Expected Goals/60: 2.38: 7th fewest in the NHL
Goals Against/60: 2.49: 6th fewest in the NHL

The Leafs are an amazingly tight defensive team when they want to be and have really good defensive stats considering they are playing in the most offensive oriented division.

Again, my point is being missed... I'm not defending Anderson. I'm suggesting that he's shown us who he is time and time again, it's the job of Kyle Dubas to upgrade the position. It's beyond reason or rationality for Leaf fans to suddenly expect Anderson to be something he's not, after a decade as an NHL starter.

Maya Angelou said "when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time"... Some people need to take that to heart.
Most are expecting him to perform like he has the majority of his career. Seems reasonable, but unlikely. I figure he's just slowly declining

Would Sam Bennet do?

he just a very average goaltender that has nights where he's really really good, but he always seems to let in one of "those goals"

I think that's his topside, that was elite the Willie, no quit and lots of will if you could get this player for 8.5 games out of 10 he's a 35/50 guy

I think he led the charge for sure, and he lifted all the boats....just a nostalgia thing but they should give him #20, the old timers will know why

how uncanny is this

It's an impossibly cringy to hold a player to a standard that he's never been able to duplicate after they removed a top 10'ish player in the league from his wing.

Tavares is slightly off his normal pace this year, but could easily turn it on in the 2nd half... If you want him to play like the guy that scored 47 goals a couple years ago, put Marner and Hyman back on his wings and watch the points ratchet up.

I thought it was a solid tip. Deflected shots are not easy to stop IMO. Those pucks either hit you or go wide or it goes in. Hard to anticipate how a deflection would come in
I'd actually love to see the stats on tips, certainly feels like a lot are ending up in our net and it's not like we don't have similar opportunities.

Wonder if that's just my bias, or is there's something to Andy's play.

You killed me with the ball hockey ball

No doubt he's struggling a little bit more than usual, but it would help if the team wasn't giving up an odd man rushes every other time down the ice... When you don't have a Helle level goalie in net, it's probably in your best interest not to play like you do.

You would figure they would be included among the top 44 keepers in terms of minutes played though.

Expanding it out even further, Andersen ranks 34th out of the 55 keepers to play at least 1500 minutes since the start of 2019 season for save%

Very similar to last game, except the boys were rewarded for their effort this time.

Absolutely filthy OT winner by Matthews.

dont think they have stats on what % of tips actually get scored.

Tips that are actually on goal compared to wide how often do they go in? never seen a stat like that.

The Good: The big guys were the big guys, Mitch and Matty both played 24+ mins, it seems weird but Nylander and JT were seemingly always in the play, driving the play and creating chances, but, and here's the weird part, they only played just over 16+mins. They did so much tonight they seemed to be on the ice a lot more then that. Zach Hyman was f***ing great what a stud, can't say enough about how fortunate the Leafs are to have this guy and got him for Greg McKegg. Not a point and no star tonight but he deserved both. TJ and Rielly really seemed to be in sync again tonight, I think it's safe to say that the pairing is working out jus fine.

The Bad: Holl and Muzzin had a pretty rough go tonight, is it the shield that's effecting Muzzin and is that in turn effecting Holl's play? They were playing great before the injury, and Holl kept up his solid play when Muzzin was sitting, as soon as Jake came back, it was like a light switch got flicked and a sudden and huge drop-off? Hopefully once it comes off there game is turned back on. It's there for Travis if he wants it, Dermott has some really good tools to have a long and lucrative career, but he's never going to get it with that kind of performance he gave tonight. Every Dman in the league makes a bad decision from time to time, some do it more often then others, so it's expected, you just shouldn't make more then 4 a game. Ray's penchant for overstating the most obvious stuff, he wears me right the puck out sometimes!

The Ugly: Figjams' pontifications, I swear he's worse then Simpson and Hughson put together

jeez and i used to read all the time how he carried Marner , lol

and i'm not holding him to his career year for goals which was quite a bit more than he's ever produced but which should be expected for 11m per cap hit

i want to see him to hit his career norms of 30ish goals and ppg as well as not looking like he's a step behind the play most games

also lucky for him he plays with the quality of players we have and that scoring is up because if he had his old line mates he'd be hard pressed to get near 70 pts

Let's be honest, were not giving up anywhere close to the number of high quality chances were generating. This isn't pond hockey, were dominating games and giving up a handful of good chances that are ending up in our net. Even then, a number of these goals aren't memorable chances of he gets a shoulder on them.
