What's difficult to understand us why you think Mcdavid has something to teach Marner in the areas of, and I quote, "work ethic" and "will to compete".

When the Leafs are losing , you can see that Marner is pulling punches. When they are going well, he's as good as there is. I get what you are trying to do, you can stop.

You have stated clearly you don't think Marner can learn anything from McDavid. I think he can.

McDavid could learn a thing or three from Marner in terms of "will to compete".

I wish someone would have thought in these terms regarding Davinci or Einstein. We all know the Pareto distribution regarding talent doesnt exist and talent is merely a function of privledge and opportunity.
.....said while I slowly exhale a plume of smoke from the devils lettuce

I always wondered where the 80/20 concept came from. ;)

Take your field of work, if you spend 2 weeks with the best person in your field of work in the world, would you become better at your job?

Definitely a fair point. I thought you were approaching it from a work ethic only stand point which really didn’t make any sense. I find it hard to believe that Marner doesn’t work hard.

You only thought that because....that's exactly what he said.

Talent exists everywhere, the question is more on can people spot the talents and give the opportunities.
It would be interesting if technology can actually scan all newborns and determine the potentials from the get go. Maybe the next great one is someone living in the Pacific Islands and never even heard of Hockey, lol.

They need to first find ice making protegies which can be tough. They cant even make decent ice in Toronto

Huberdeau McD MAC
Marchand Crosby Berge
O'Reilly Point Stammer
Couture Couturier Stone
Extra Scheifle and Hyman

Stamkos??????? A one dimensional shooter.....??

Mitch is 10 times better

Would playing with McDavid, seeing his work ethic during a tournament or seeing his will to compete close up, be something Marner could benefit from?

Take your field of work, if you spend 2 weeks with the best person in your field of work in the world, would you become better at your job?

You're implying Marner can learn how to play with effort and work ethic by playing with McDavid. And that's where you're suggesting he currently is not playing with effort and doesn't have work ethic. No he can't learn how to compete better by watching him. His compete level is always there, there is no concern with his work ethic.

If you're talking about learning something in terms of skill/IQ yes, but you changed goal posts and went from "learning how to play with effort" to "learning how to be better at your job"

So my question to you is, are you asking if Marner can learn how to play with work ethic ? Or are you asking if he can learn how to play better in terms of skill/IQ ? Because those are 2 totally different things.

Also some small guys in there... some slow guys in there... some weak defensive guys in there.... some worse offensive guys who don't even score goals any better... There doesn't appear to be anything special or consistent about this group of players, other than the fact that their name isn't Marner. Marner is quite obviously a better option than most on that list.

And what exactly are the 5 tools that you believe every one of these has, that gets priority in your eyes, over the actual quality of hockey player they are?
Guarantee if Hyman Re-signed with “da” Leafs, he’d mock his contract and wouldn’t even get a sniff of a list of da “5 tool” players

To be fair I also said in another post when the series starts to slide you can see Marner pulling punches and his effort is not the same.

I suppose he might learn some skill too. Maybe the attitude changes when things get tough, he is a leader on the team, maybe he learns how to be a better leader.

Minor nitpick here, but Couture? Really? I know he's off to a good start, but him over Marner or Tavares would be absurd.

How are Huberdeau, Stamkos, Scheifele, Hyman "5 tool players" ?

how does the best player in the world get swept by a mediocre team and have anything to teach anyone about the "will to compete"?

Yeah there are things I'd love for Marner to learn from McDavid, effort and defense isn't one of them.

Just watched the Vegas and Edmonton game and McDavid cheats pretty much the entire game. If he learned how to skate back with the same speed he does while going up the ice, he would be an extremely dangerous two way player. He doesn't really want that though. That's where he differs from Crosby who lifted the players he played with and had a 4th line grinder type mentality to get the puck back. McDavid doesn't have that and I don't think it's going to come to him if it hasn't already.
