I see it the other way around; she's by far the most qualified, and she should have her moment in the sun and not have it as part of a mass release with other, less qualified people - shows that they're on the same level, and they're not.

Ryan Hardy is less than 5 years out from coaching a USHL team; when I was scouting in that league with ties to the college community, I used to get his weekly emails from with schedules of where his guys would be playing to get exposure... and I was just a regional scout!

Darryl Metcalf is an analytics guy who, while fully devoted to what he does, has only been in the game fully for 8 years when he started as an Analyst.

Hayley Wickenheiser is a hockey legend and has devoted her life to this game; to say that she is just another one to "promote" is a touch ridiculous. Olympic medals, world championships, being the face of womens hockey, that is a step above the preceding two.

That’s very surface level analysis. History is only a component of and does not dictate competency or qualification. We’ve never watched any of Wickenheiser, Metcalf or Hardy work in their roles, so who are any of us to proclaim who is most qualified?

Well I've been doing it since before he was a teenager, so maybe?

Congratulations! I know the best experts are the ones who have to tell everyone about what an expert they are.

You're so smart to see through all of this stuff for what it is.....an outrage!

Experience in the industry is a bona fide sign of knowledge to perform one's work, far greater than title.

Wickenheiser has been in hockey full-time since 1998, playing at the National Team level. During that time, she play on the WNT, played in USports, played in third-division Finnish Men's league, and also has been involved with the Leafs organization since 2018 (5 years now) in an executive role.

Hardy was 13 when Wickenheiser was playing internationally. He never played at a high level, but was involved in the junior game w/ the US-NTDP, scouted with the Bruins for a couple of years, before GMing the Steel and moving into the Leafs organization barely a year ago.

Metcalf never played, and was 12 when Wickenheiser was playing internationally. His degree is in Chemical Engineering. He became an Analyst in 2014/2015, and became a Director of Analytics in in 2017-2018 before Special Assistant to the GM in 2019-2020. Total of 8 years in the game period.

You're really going to make the case that these two are on the same level as Wickenheiser?

Special assistant to the GM.

Dubas said he'll be learning as much as he can about everything, and a year from now they will decide what he enjoyed most to start focusing on as an expertise.

This reeks of an organization that cares more about brownnosing the gen pop than one with a competitive spirit. Like really see what he enjoys most? You put him where he had the best results if you keep him

The best part of when people refer to another as an 'expert' in a sarcastic way is that they're just projecting their own lack of knowledge on an area in a discussion they disagree with.

It's fairly typical for people to profess their credentials when making a claim based on experience. I never called myself an expert, just that I had extensive experience on it. What you've done is formally known as a straw man fallacy.

This should help.

Your logical fallacy is strawman

you get to be AGM

Great gigs with fancy titles that would pay very well and also comes with extended summers.
Congrats to all of them.

Lol yeah was wondering that as well. Not sure why we need so many 'assistants'. Surely there is a better title out there based on what they are doing with the management group.
need a team of AGM’s to read through all of kyle’s spreadsheets…
in all seriousness, i like Hayley a lot. But this franchise needs some focus. this is getting silly. The goal here is simple, but these guys continue to run hockey exec mini school.

Angela James is an owner or GM (Can’t Remember) of an NWHL team in Toronto right now. So if they did hire her, she’d have experience in upper management. Not to mention she is one of the best female hockey players to grace the ice.

I believe she also just got the Order of Canada. Maybe she is more suited to take over for Shanny.

Sharks just hired first GM of colour. Leafs will be first organization to hire first female GM of colour once the Brock Badger is fired. Angela James, come on down !!!

Also as a coloured hockey fan, this is terrific. I saw the news broke and I couldn’t believe it. Just goes to show with hard work it’s a possibility. Grier has worked hard to earn that opportunity but it’s nice that he broke through and has now paved a way for others who are coloured and love the game enough to want to be a GM one day. His brother is the GM of the Miami Dolphins in the NFL I believe, so great day for the family.

Yup Kevin Weekes mentioned that about his brother. He has his work cut out for him though.

LOL maybe, idk it’s hard to see how Shanny has let this ship sail without much of his identity on the team. I’ve never seen executive build a team that strays so far away from how he played as an individual. It makes me feel like, he’s not that involved in the hockey ops side and is more heavily involved with the business side, getting alumni back and making sure the sponsors are there. He’s def put a lot of trust in Dubas

Rookie President hires rookie GM hires rookie coach & gets rookie AGMs.

Actually, the only AGM he had with experience has been moved out of his role.

Not saying some of them didn't deserve a promotion but this is comical. I'd say why not hire a competent/experienced AGM but maybe he only wants guys beside him that are loyal and aren't a threat to him, didn't wanna hire his replacement or interim replacement?

I'm happy for all the people getting title bumps but that's not really all that interesting. I'm guessing their roles will largely stay the same as they were. Why is nobody talking about the actual new hire for a very important role and has a major impact on the Leafs biggest question this off-season, goaltending.

Does anybody know anything about Curtis Sanford? Is this a good hire? What experience does he have and are there any NHL goalies he has connections with?

Abbotsford Canucks goalie coach Curtis Sanford hired by Toronto Maple Leafs

"Sanford, 42, was hired in 2017 by the Canucks and served as a goaltending consultant with a heavy focus on the Utica Comets until joining the Abbotsford Canucks as a full time goaltending coach this past season.

Sanford was instrumental in identifying Spencer Martin as a trade target for the Canucks while watching him play with the Syracuse Crunch, and later, in developing Martin from a third-string AHL goaltender into an NHL backup."

Don't we need to buff up our goalie development and evaluation department?

We should be flexing our financial muscle by having the best people at the organizational level to support players, management, systems etc.
yo are you the same Duff on realgm? lol

Nice to see this news especially on Hayley. One day she will be a general manager and will do well. Sanford is a good hiring. Only heard good things from Vancouver.
Have to think that there will be more adds to the goalie department than a minor league goalie coach???

I’d disagree with that statement. Hardy and Hayley will likely get hired as GM’s. Hardy’s rise in the NHL is very similar to Dubas’ and some other younger GM’s. Hayley is really smart and such a legend, I have no doubt she will one day be a GM. Same with Cammi Gronato. I think he’s trying to help them learn the role. Dubas isn’t going to be here forever. I just don’t see the leafs being an organization that will go back to recycling old GM’s they were one of the first to really introduce new blood into their management teams.

A bunch of playoff disappointment with this rookie GM and the rookie GM before that was JFJ. I don't know why you'd ever hire a rookie GM again lol.
