Glad the Leafs have a goalie coach in place now. It might help them to make critical decisions on player contracts at that position.

I imagine that Hayley Wickenheiser will have a lot of input on that as well as the pro scouting staff.

LOL... ok, this is just ridiculous. They're not AGM's. This is just PR-based nonsense. If their job doesn't change, the title shouldn't change.

Free raises for everyone! And far be it from Kyle not to have a woman AGM; she's the most qualified of the bunch without question, but it just dilutes things to have it as part of a mass promotion.

Lots of lobster and Dom Perignon in the boardroom at lunch today!

Can you explain why this bothers you so much? It makes me laugh to see people get upset over shit like this. Does it affect you in anyway? No. Does it affect the players in anyway? No. Does it affect the organization in anyway? No. Does it help to keep the morale of the staff high so they can continue to provide their best? Yes. So that’s all that matters.

It does nothing to you. So again, why do you care so much

That's one opinion on it... I think it would be worse to have a separate announcement for Wickenheiser just because she's female.

This way they're treated as equals instead of Wickenheiser being paraded around to gain positive PR.

I see it the other way around; she's by far the most qualified, and she should have her moment in the sun and not have it as part of a mass release with other, less qualified people - shows that they're on the same level, and they're not.

Ryan Hardy is less than 5 years out from coaching a USHL team; when I was scouting in that league with ties to the college community, I used to get his weekly emails from with schedules of where his guys would be playing to get exposure... and I was just a regional scout!

Darryl Metcalf is an analytics guy who, while fully devoted to what he does, has only been in the game fully for 8 years when he started as an Analyst.

Hayley Wickenheiser is a hockey legend and has devoted her life to this game; to say that she is just another one to "promote" is a touch ridiculous. Olympic medals, world championships, being the face of womens hockey, that is a step above the preceding two.

they're not diluting anything

they're doing their job + training to be GMs at the same time. this is talent development.

to me it points to kyle starting to maybe put in some succession work just in case results don't come or if pridham decides to make the jump to GM in the near future.

it's a smart thing to do. then when a little churn happens, wickenheiser or metcalf become full time AGMs then other people behind them start training.

all the best teams don't just have a long list of developed players but developed management.

Why do they refer to her as Dr? What exactly does she have her doctorate in? Why are the other individuals not given their titles (Mr)? Is she supposed to be the called Dr, Wickenheiser in a professional setting when doing hockey things?

This just seems like pandering.

If only the leafs were as good at playoffs are they are in media relations.

They're a team. All-for-one and one-for-all is the right approach here.

Time to just get on with it.

A great announcement, all around.

I believe she is an MD now but obviously not practicing.

Don't we need to buff up our goalie development and evaluation department?

We should be flexing our financial muscle by having the best people at the organizational level to support players, management, systems etc.

I usually call my doctor "Dr.", don't you? She's a physician. M.D. Graduate of the University of Calgary Medical School. Not an easy path to follow.

"Mr. Fancy Lad" has quite a ring to it, though, if you would like that too :)

Agree to disagree then. I'm happier about Wickenheiser, but they're being promoted to the same title so they are technically on the same level (even if I'm way more happy about her than the other 2). Just because she's more qualified doesn't mean her AGM is above the other two AGMs or needs to be stated separately.

Either way, exciting news and truly happy for her and the other two!

But they're not training to be GM's.

No one can mentor that many people. Trust me on this; it's literally what I went to school for, and have done in my career for decades.

Mentoring is difficult at the best of times, and that's with one, MAYBE two people under your wing... and none of those are as complex and stressful as running an NHL franchise, let alone one of (if not the most) demanding of them all.

This is a case of just offering promotions for bigger paycheques; I've seen it a million times over my career... changing someones title, despite no change to their responsibility, as a 'reward' so you can officially change their compensation band.

There is also little, if any, succession planning here. Dubas and his AGM's are only here as long as Dubas is here. Every GM is going to want their own people. Simple as that.

Apparently that is in the works

By all accounts, the Leafs have cast a wide net since deciding not to extend a new contract to goalie coach Steve Briere last month. Word is they’ve spoken to a variety of potential replacements, including those currently employed by other NHL organizations. Sources say Curtis Sanford made a particularly strong impression. He’s expected to join the Leafs organization after working the past five years for the Vancouver Canucks in goalie development. It’s not entirely clear how the roles will be divided in Toronto’s growing goaltender department or when they’ll be announced publicly. But it’s telling that Dubas wanted to conduct an analysis of how that part of the organization could function best as a whole in addition to executing an expansive search for Briere’s replacement. Expect Jon Elkin to have a role as well – he worked in player development for the Leafs last season and is expected to stick around.” —Johnston

Mr/Mrs/Ms titles are just traditional titles that hold relatively little value

Dr on the other hand means something, someone that has gone through medical training and holds certifications.

I hope Sanford does a much better job of: a) solidifying Mrazek in net, making him play a "quieter" game in net so he's not flopping like a fish; and b) help bring along a darn goaltending prospect that might eventually become useful.

I'm stocked to see Wickenheiser get an elevated role.

Sanford seems like a fine hire, we'll see.

Hardy and Gilman around the Marlies should be fine, they've done well attracting solid prospects and developing. I just hope they don't keep Greg Moore if the team keeps struggling.

I don't understand how people can be so negative about this. Not everything needs to be criticized to death.

Lol.. why do people never do research before posting. She is legitimately a doctor of medicine. I think emergency medicine. She was at one point doing her residency at a Toronto hospital while also doing player development during her off days or after work. Quite impressive if you ask me.

and you get to be AGM
and everybody gets to be AGM

what progressive forward thinking out of the box moves Dubie made today , lol ,now go out and find us a goalie

Nice to see this news especially on Hayley. One day she will be a general manager and will do well. Sanford is a good hiring. Only heard good things from Vancouver.

Sanford should be good as he worked under Clark in Vancouver and Clark is one of the best goalie coaches in the league.
Good for Dr. Wickenheiser to get the promotion. Maybe he will take over Dubas’s role in a few months.

Maybe he'll bring you in as an AGM, too! You can handle the "mentoring department" since you're such an expert.
