Their drafting has gotten a lot better over the past few years. They've been hitting with their picks outside of the 1st round which is good to see (Ethan bear was a 5th rounder, Caleb Jones was a 4th, guys like Petrov and Tullio are coming along, McLeod was a 2nd round pick, Niemelainen was a 3rd, Lagesson was a 4th and most of these guys are playing in the NHL right now). They do have some really good prospects like Holloway, Broberg, Bougault and all of their 1sts so if Holland wanted to put together a package he could. I just don't see him having the wherewithal to do it.

Caleb Jones is no longer a oiler and relegated to 3rd pairing d-man.. Those other players you mentioned are 3rd and 4th line players which helps with depth but outside of that there prospects don't stand out and More so there is no guarantee any of them are worth pursuing...

Tampa , Pittsburgh, LA, Chicago all shared something in common had drafted and developed there entire roster at each position and there young elite prospects exceeded expectations ... having a young core defenseman, a goalie , and impact forwards with a solid young group of depth waiting in there respective farm team helped maintain and establish dominance....

Edmonton doesn't have a the luxury of enough positions filled with that kind of talent nor does Edmonton have that much depth in their farm system developed and ready to fill the many gaps ...

Chicago had seabrook , Keith, hammer and buff , niemi then there depth 3rd and 4th line players were impactful sprinkled in was some veterans and their 2 draft picks toews then kane both exceeded expectations at a early age . So even with a cap losing that much talent after winning a cup they had plenty of talent and depth in there farm league.

Likewise tampa , Pittsburgh, LA ...... That's the point here Edmonton doesn't poses enough talent to make any major moves and affect there roster...

Even 40 year Craig Anderson is better than Mike Smith and Koskinen. If there's one guy who could immediately get hot and go on another hot run it's Craig. He would be dirt cheap to acquire at the deadline.

It makes sense when you think about it logically. There are only a few goalies in the league who year in and year out stand in the top 5 consistency. Therefore teams need to draft and develop their own and put together a solid team defense to help.

Trading for a goalie is nothing but a headache and no guarantee. St Louis goaltender Bennington caught lightning in a bottle and the same with Scott darling both goalies following seasons were less than expected.

Or look at lundquist he was a all star goalie but never won a cup and his talent alone wasn't enough to help new york win...

Depth and solidify your bottom lines at the center and adding defensive depth ...

Exactly, and, isnt Skinner the solution in a very near future? Smith is 39 and Koskinen might be gone, the spot is ripe for picking.

How would the Oilers improve in nets through trades? Are they gonna give big for a Gibson, who gets injured pretty frequently? Or are they going after a Korpisalo who's not necessarily better than any of Skinner, Smith, Koskinen?

Imo the best play for the Oilers is hope one of their goalies catch fire in the playoffs, look at a young-ish reclamation project in FA and move Skinner up next year.

Then keep an eye for a solid backup to support Skinner in the future. Guys like Jake Allen are cheap cheap.

As an Avs fan, I really want to face Mike Smith in net for the Oilers in round 1.

Not me, I would rather face Koskinen. Smith can get hot at any given time. Koskinen is a kinder surprise, don't know what surprise you will get from him.

Well said.. The goalie position has to be drated and developed. Look at Pittsburgh or Chicago they drafted and developed there goalies and replacements.

Or st Louis Bennington replaced I believe was Jake Allen and caught lightening in a bottle.

The only goalie who is worth a risk is MAF and even if he opts to be traded there is no guarantee he or any goalie will be the answer , those positions require time needed between the goalie and defensemen and forwards to understand and compliment each other.. MAF struggled in Chicago early on new team and needed time to build trust and chemistry....

Drafting and developing a goalie takes years before there remotely ready to move up even into a backup role to gain experience and prove there ready to handle the starter role and long season...

Just my opinion but the defense needs to help him out more and his confidence is teetering. Maybe they need to sit him for a bit or as team work harder to protect him and help him Regain his trust and confidence...

Maybe play a bit more of a tighter defensive game , because come playoff time most games are 3-2 or 2-1 or 1-0 , practice and prepare now for those grinds. Just saying

Outside the top contenders, it doesn't matter who's "available". You just have to pay more to pry loose the goalie you want. Not that the Oilers have much for assets to offer though.
Not true at all. The Oilers have a lot of the right kind of futures. The prospect pool doesnt have premier blue chips (except Holloway or Broberg arguably) but it is very deep. No team is trading a blue chipper like what Zegras was.

I agree with Johnston that it might be a buyer's market. There is so little cap space in the playoff teams. Imo the experiment of multiple retention using a third party will be more avoided because of the insane cost of it.

Maybe we see the cost of retention go down, for those third parties. Or more likely the sellers ask a little less

I'm not sure what a right kind of futures means ? Also no team is willing to move a player who should bring back/return high draft picks or blue chip prospects. If a team wants a certain player to fill a certain position they will have to give up something of value ... Edmonton lacks enough high draft picks or prospects and has no cap space to absorb a targeted player without dumping enough cap.. Those are simply put facts...

Much easier said than done. The Oilers just don't have a good enough Blueline and when your best players don't even play D or backcheck and lead by example, how do you expect the rest of the team to follow? Plus they need to bring in a coach that preaches a 200ft game.

Daryl Sutter would have been perfect for them but he only came back to coach only the Flames.

i think for Toronto, or Edmonton, it would be bad policy to put it out there that they are aggressively trying to acquire a goalie. For toronto in particular, it would be a distraction internally, and externally. I personally think they are looking.

Im not sure Daryl Sutter is the answer look at his style and team plans he has implemented....
Edmonton has done a poor job of drafting and developing there youth. They felt the heat from guys like McDavid and drai and made some front office changes but in doing so any youth was moved out and certain positions were not fully addressed in the offseason.

Mike Smith should have been moved long ago especially at his age ... But your right it's easier said than done.... Edmonton just like many teams overpaid a couple of players and didn't put together or stick with a solid rebuild plan and hers they are ... both players are 25 and 26 not getting any younger and they lack any depth needed to help offset their cap issues and free agency isn't tool to build a stanley cup team neither....

What many people don't realize Dale talon built chicago in 3 years then Florida took him longer with lots of promising things 8 years into a rebuild and basically Florida was rebuilt by him and look at them now highest scoring team in the league and a bona-fide contender...

Personally I don't see McDavid and drai winning a cup in Edmonton, maybe I'll be proven wrong but the overall make up of the team paints a different picture. They remind me of Toronto using free agency to buy a stanley cup with no internal depth... hence they fail to go further than a 1st or 2nd round.....

Amazing. I argue half of us on these boards could manage NHL rosters better than these GM's. How do you not address a glaring hole?
The half that could run one can identify a weak market. Moving deck chairs isn't necessarily 'addressing' the problem.

Teams like Toronto or Edmonton aren't in a position where it benefits them to spend significant futures on short-term upgrades, regardless of position.

They should be in the market for players who improve them and fit the payroll moving forward beyond this season. There are no goaltenders that fit that description.

OK but to be fair, when was the last time a goalie was traded for "significant futures."

It never happens. Because goalies are rarely established in the same manner a skater is based off of his offensive production.

Goalies have statistics but they're heavily influenced by the quality of team in front. Those stats don't necessarily carry over.

How often do you see a competitive team add their starting goaltender at the trade deadline?

You bored? I mean what the Hell are you even arguing about? Lol

I mean the poster answered my question by listing 2 players that aren’t reported as available….I guess the next time that happens, I’ll tag you and ask how I should respond.

And you’ve now chimed in multiple times in something that had zero to do with you and still haven’t answered the original question yourself? You trying to meet a post quota or something?
Why are you mad? Got up on the wrong foot?

Vegas got Lehner at the deadline and Bishop to TB was a deadline deal. Roy was traded inseason.

It doesn't happen each year but it's not as far fetched as you make it seem. Varlamov is an upgrade for both teams.

Holland really messed up in two ways this past off season.

1) He failed to get a legit goalie but instead believed that a coming to 40 year old Mike Smith could put out a repeat performance from last year, despite his history of injuries. I agree that they should have traded him last summer when his value was pretty high.
2) Signing Darnell Nurse to pretty much an open book contract. He should have offered him much lower and if he rejects then trade him.

That Darnell Nurse contract is going to handicap this team for the next 6 years. He's just not that good, a low end #1 dman and is easily replacable.

Then other blunders like re-signing Barrie, for what? To play on the bottom pair with sheltered minutes? They should have let him go and give the spot to Broberg. Bringing in Keith seemed to have been a smart move though but I feel they could have gotten him cheaper. They overpaid for Hyman but they had no choice. I can see why they wanted him.

And his most recent move of bringing Kane is clearly a desperation move. Kane is not going to put this team over the top.

I'm not mad, i'm sympathetic....because i assume you are an adult, and the fact that you have nothing better to do than jump into a conversation that didn't involve you and start making some laughable and nonsensical argument is kinda sad....

But I guess I gave you the attention you were so desperately seeking, so you’re welcome for that. But I’m done now. See you in the next Leaf’s thread with your next useless argument.

When I read posts like this it reminds that very few fanbases really understand much of what goes on beyond their immediate city and team.

Holland did try to secure the services of at least two other goaltenders we know of; Markstrom who ultimately went to Calgary and Kuemper who went to Colorado. In both cases Holland was outbid by the winning team. So he didn't really set out "believing" Mike Smith could put on a repeat performance. He obviously realized that was against the odds and he tried to get a better goalie. That he failed is the correct criticism to focus on. He tried, sure, but failed. Going back to Koskinen and Smith was clearly his plan C.

Holland signed Darnell Nurse to a long term lucrative contract. In a very simplistic view, fans who don't know anything about the Oilers could simply yell "Trade him! Let him walk!" without realizing there was literally no one - NO ONE - available in the organization that could take on his minutes. Klefbom is likely never to play hockey again. No one else in the system could play 24+ top pairing minutes a night. Nurse signed a bridge contract and gambled on himself. And he won. The team had no choice.

It is next to impossible to get a cost controlled top pairing defenseman entering his prime via trade. The Oilers certainly couldn't. So Holland, having allowed Chicago the cap room to overpay Seth Jones in a new long term contract thanks to the Keith trade set his own table. Again, that is a fair criticism. Just bellowing "he should have traded Nurse!" is foolish. The correct critique is that Holland screwed himself and the team had no other options but to pay Nurse.

Next, Tyson Barrie. Barrie was signed because Bouchard, as a rookie, wasn't certain to be ready for top RHD pairing minutes. Everyone hoped he would be but Barrie was signed as a relatively short contract to shelter Bouchard as he became comfortable with the role. He has had good games and some not so good games, just like a rookie defenseman usually has. Barrie at the time was coming off a season where he led all (that's right, ALL) defensemen in points. It was a good signing at the time.

Holland should absolutely had gotten Keith for cheaper. 100% correct. And he hosed himself with Nurses contract after Jones and Chicago set the market. Dumb move.

Hyman was a good signing. Expensive, long but still a good one.
