Confirmed with Link: Leafs acquire Jake McCabe (@50%), Sam Lafferty, cond. 2024 and 2025 5th round picks for Joey Anderson, Pavel Gogolev, 2025 1st (top 10 prot), 2026 2nd

does it really matter that much . lol

always love when low end picks get added in big deals . like somehow it evens things out . lol . still better to get them thrown in since you never know
Well it sounds like if McCabe doesn’t play a certain amount of games next year the 5ths become 3rds, so it does matter.

They'll be crap the next two years, and Kane and Toews deals are done. Retaining means nothing to them.

It’s a retention slot tied up for two years they’ll be selling off more players, probably an extra 3rd worth of value a year if they committed to using all 3 slots every deadline.

He's formulating his praise of TBay's trade and condemnation of this one as we type.
Let's look at this. We will assume for this scenario that the minor leaguers moved were to open up contract slots or fulfil retention rules, and contributed little to the trade values..

- Leafs paid 2 firsts, Tampa paid a 1st and a 2020 1st (Foote), so 2 1sts.
- Leafs paid 2 seconds, Tampa paid one 2nd.
- Leafs paid a 3rd, Tampa paid a 3rd
- Leafs paid a 4th, Tampa paid a 4th.
- Tampa paid a 5th. Leafs received 2- 5ths, one of which could be a 3rd.

The one lone difference is a Leafs paid an extra 2nd vs Tampa paying a 5th while the Leafs received 2 additional conditional 5ths, one of which could be upgraded to 3rd.

Leafs got:

ROR (UFA - 75% retention),
Acciari (UFA),
McCabe (50% retention for 3 playoff runs),
Lafferty (for 2 playoff runs)

Tampa got:
Jeannot (RFA)

Unless McCabe is getting a murder charge or something this is one of the most one sided deals in NHL history

We got two picks for pleasure of getting 50% retained for 2.5 years

Ottawa basically gave up what we did to retain more on Murray without two extra players

if that's the condition then it becomes much more important add , strange condition if true since usually you don't you don't see it jump up 2 slots . also has McCabe had injury issues ?

Dubas walking out for today’s press conference….

I think Dubas is ahead of the curve on a trend we will soon see. The difference between late 1st/2nd round picks and 5th round picks are statistically a crap shoot. Trading downward that far provides distinct returns and you still get your draft shots.

i hope your not being serious

Don't tell me your reaction to these trades is worrying about our 2026 1st round pick man.

I keep forgetting how people on this board take you seriously unless you make perfectly clear you're not being serious.

In this case, not entirely serious. It's not like the Leafs don't have a relatively recent history of trading a 1st round pick that came back and bit them. Two actually.

I think most if not all GMs know about this but when it come to using draft picks as currency, for some strange reasons a 2nd or 3rd is a lot higher than 5th.

With the additions of ROR, Acciari, & Lafferty, it would seem Dubas had given Keefe the resources he needs. Now let's see if he can figure out an optimal deployment or will the 3rd line still be the weak link.

Amazing last 2 trades by Dubas, yeah the picks are gone but the value is sky high. Having McCabe at 2 million for the next 2 years after this one is amazing value. Even Lafferty at 1.5 next season is a bonus. I’m not a big fan of Dubas but we’ll done dude well done!!!! Say what you will but Dubas has massive balls making these 2 moves. Guy is all f***ing in!!! LFGGGG!!!!

What I like the most about this trade (and the entirety of the last week) is…

a) the nearly universal approval on this particular board,
b) the credit Dubas is getting for taking the home-runs swings and not decimating the future, and
c) the hatred and lunacy generated in the main boards.

I don’t feel the latest trades were desperation moves by a GM with no contract for next year. I think Dubas has made an honest-to-God effort to win it all this year, and earn the right to come back next year and try to do it again.
