Confirmed with Link: Leafs acquire Jake McCabe (@50%), Sam Lafferty, cond. 2024 and 2025 5th round picks for Joey Anderson, Pavel Gogolev, 2025 1st (top 10 prot), 2026 2nd

Leafs still have to clear capspace for Murray to return
Now that the Leafs have acquired McCabe and Lafferty, which two players would they put on waivers if and when Matt Murray comes back from LTIR?

Woll goes down to make room on the roster. After that, it looks like they would need to clear another $1,150,000 in cap room.

If I'm correct, they can save a max of $1,125,000 in cap space on any contract equal to or greater than that amount. By that token, it would take two skaters to clear enough cap space.

They don't seem to have a skater that doesn't need to clear waivers.

If there are no other LTIR's, then which two skaters would they expose to waivers?

Is there another trade of a roster player coming to clear up this problem? Would they trade one of their pending UFA's Kerfoot, Engvall, Kampf or Holl for futures to solve this problem?

I presume that O'Rielly and Acciari are not going to be traded, and trading Bunting and ZAR is no use because they don't make enough money to solve a salary cap issue.

Are they just planning to keep Murray on LTIR until the playoffs?

Still a few days for another minor deal and 20 games to see who fits where.

For fun:
Knies. Matthews. Marner
Tavares. ROR. Nylander
Bunting Acciari.Lafferty. Would be a fun havoc line
ZAR. Kampf. jarnkrok

This is Dubas's all in year, and it can't really be any other way. If the leafs lose in the first round again he probably won't get a contract extension and that would likely be it for him as an NHL gm.

The positives is that while he gave up a ton of assets, they were for pieces that make the leafs considerably better for the upcoming playoffs. Playoff stalwart O'rielly and two "playoff style" depth players (albeit with no playoff experience.) Tampa hasn't done nearly as much yet, other than one of the most baffling trades I've ever freaking seen.

The negatives is what will happen if the leafs still lose in the first freaking round. Dubas will be fired and the new gm is taking over a team with pretty much NO picks for the foreseeable future and (lets face it... although many of you will surely deny it) a pretty lackluster prospect pool. Oh, and all the skilled cores contracts are up in a year or two.

And if the leafs lose again, Dubas is fired, and the media erupts in flat out hysterics... are all 3 of the young core really gonna want to stay and be a part of this? I think if the leafs lose in the first round things will go REALLY badly. Like, Harold Ballard years bad. This is probably the most important leaf playoff series since the 1967 finals vs Montreal.
Agreed, if he's going down, he's going down swinging. And to be honest he's provided enough talent and depth. At this point, it's on the players to get the job done. If they lose. obviously Dubas will be at fault, as will every part of the team. But at this point I'd really point the finger at the players the most if the team fails.

I just don't get why people are so anxious to trade Kerfoot, Holl or Engvall. They're all very useful players, especially now that they're down in the lineup.
Start from the best players and work yourself down by position. When you get to the last 7 players, balance the requirement for toughness such as acciari. You will figure it out.

Garland would easily put up 60 points in our top 6.
Please no more Liverpudlians , please
We are finally trending in the right direction and realizing that to have any chance is to balance out your roster elite / hard nosed real players with size and demeanour.
Let’s not go backwards
We have enough elite ..

Is there a Bedard-level prospect draft eligible for 2026 that we should be worried about?

Because on the unlikely chance Auston walks, maybe Willie too and we keep the 2025 pick because it's in the top 10 ... Be afraid.

Don't tell me your reaction to these trades is worrying about our 2026 1st round pick man.

I bet Dubas doesn’t last a week unemployed. He’ll be the most sought after GM on the market.
I don't think he'll be unemployed. It will be like JFJ. He'll get other jobs in NHL front offices. But never an NHL gm again.

He was gifted teenage Matthews, Nylander, and Marner and (if we lose again this year) was unable to win even ONE playoff series in six tries. If we lose again, he will go down in history as one of the worst gm's in the leafs very long history. Leaf fans will agree. Remember, on a poll here 80% of leaf fans thought Burke should get a contract extension a few weeks before he was fired. Now every leaf fan on the planet agrees his tenure was a dumpster fire. Same will happen with Dubas.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot* - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - O’Rielly - Jarnkrok*
Lafferty - Kampf - Acciari
Knies*

Rielly - McCabe
Giordano - Liljegren
Sandin - Brodie
Holl & Timmins
Kerfoot will not be on the 2nd line.

ROR likely to be 2nd line centre again so they can load that line.

Remember when I have said the Leafs have never gone TRULY all in?

THIS boys and girls is TRULY ALL IN and I LOVE it.

LET'S f***ING GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Initial impressions:

I have always liked Jake McCabe going back to his Buffalo days and getting him cost-controlled going forward is a huge plus.

Lafferty is also signed for next year at a pittance. I am less sure what to make of him. A lot of hype but not much of a track record prior to this year.

Given that, I am actually feeling alright about this. Assuming that both players don't crash and burn in Toronto, we could probably get the picks (1st + 2nd) back or near it in the summer (if we wanted to).

Anderson and Gogolev are just throw ins to balance the contracts. In theory both have some potential left but the former cleared waivers last week and the latter is in the ECHL. The loss of picks this deadline hurts, but it is fantastic that we haven't moved one remotely valuable prospect.
