Confirmed with Link: Leafs acquire Jake McCabe (@50%), Sam Lafferty, cond. 2024 and 2025 5th round picks for Joey Anderson, Pavel Gogolev, 2025 1st (top 10 prot), 2026 2nd

I love our top 2 lines
Not without waiving 2 current players. ZAR, sure, but which of Kerfoot, Engvall, Kampf, Jarnkrok, or Acciari do the Leafs have to waive with ZAR for the extra $200K required to become cap compliant?

There is definitely another trade coming.
Engvall or Kerfoot are gone. They make too much $$.

I don't think he'll be unemployed. It will be like JFJ. He'll get other jobs in NHL front offices. But never an NHL gm again.

He was gifted teenage Matthews, Nylander, and Marner and (if we lose again this year) was unable to win even ONE playoff series in six tries. If we lose again, he will go down in history as one of the worst gm's in the leafs very long history. Leaf fans will agree. Remember, on a poll here 80% of leaf fans thought Burke should get a contract extension a few weeks before he was fired. Now every leaf fan on the planet agrees his tenure was a dumpster fire. Same will happen with Dubas.

I will bet good money he doesn’t make it an off-season before being hired again as an NHL GM

Not only me, but on Mirtles podcast he already mentioned that teams are waiting to see if the Leafs fire Dubas this off-season because they’re interested.

Yep- with Laffy on board, Knies on the horizon and a little over a mil of cap that needs to be shed, there just isn't room for both Kerfoot/Engvall. I think at least one of the two is a goner for sure.

Who said the sky is falling? The Leafs are primed for a playoff run, and have a decent chance of winning at least a round. Doesn't take much foresight to see what will happen should they fail, however.
I don't see how this deal changes anything? If we win then nobody gives a f***. There is no scenario where we will be bad next season and if things have gone south at that point then we start selling people off and rebuild. You have to go for it when you have a chance to win. f*** hindsight.

Ok, might be a dumb question, but what does a top 10 protected first rounder mean. I have an idea but just want to be sure. Does that mean if the Leafs finish bottom 10 that they keep their first rounder? If that's the case it makes the trade more of a steal! More like an insurance policy attached. Thanks

I just don't get why people are so anxious to trade Kerfoot, Holl or Engvall. They're all very useful players, especially now that they're down in the lineup.
Because you would have to trade someone better or someone they just acquired, which is just plain dumb.

Or waive 2 players, ZAR and who?

Dubas Media Avail after McCabe / Lafferty deal -

* Wanted team to become more competitive & change the identity a little bit. All 3 forwards have proven they can score in tight, in areas where we've struggled in the past. Thinks they've added guys that go to the harder areas of the rink.

*Pleased that they were able to get deals over the line without having to move prospects already in the system.

*Neither the Tampa or Boston trades had any influence on the McCabe / Lafferty deal - says this deal was already mostly done prior to Tampa announcing Jeannot deal.

*Thinks the team relish a very challenging first round opponent. Points out that if playoffs started today, 2 of the top 6 teams in the league would be eliminated in the first round. Feels his team embraces that challenge.

* While McCabe & Lafferty both have some term, his priority was to give his team the best chance to win regardless of whether best trade target was rental or not. Doesn't want to deplete picks & future asset capital too much, but fact that McCabe & Lafferty can both provide utility over next few years helped him part with acquisition cost. Reiterates how pleased he is that they got all deals over the line without having to give up prospects already developing in the system.

*Expects Matt Murray to come off LTIR this week. Has been skating and participation should be ramped up. While another move must be made to accomodate Murray coming off LTIR, will use as much time as they need and won't rush into decisions - goes back to similar situation last year, where Leafs needed to make roster move to accomodate player coming off LTIR, but Sandin got hurt in Nashville, freeing up needed cap space. "If you have time, use it".

* Will still be busy & active, and try to improve the club. Wants to find balance between changing the group too much this late in a season, but highlights how good the group has been in accepting ROR & Acciari into the group already. Thinks adding ROR & Acciari while team were about to start mini-road trip helped them acclimatize to the team quickly, and expects this west coast + NJ trip to help LAfferty & McCabe settle in - says on the road guys are forced to be together, which helps everyone build comradery.

* Expectation is McCabe & Lafferty arrive today, practice tomorrow, and are available for Wednesday/Thursday back-to-back. Expects some lineup changes to accommodate new arrivals, but says Keefe has the ultimate decision.

*Praises coaching & development staff at University of Minnesota, for allowing Matt Knies to utilize his strengths. Says he enjoyed watching both Knies & Michael Kestor play live last week. Pleased he was imposing himself physically. Likes that Big 10 Championship games coming up means Knies & Kestor continue to play in high pressure games to aid with their development.

* McCabe hasn't played an NHL playoff game, but that doesn't concern him - highlights Ron Hainsey not having any playoff experience prior to going to Pittsburgh, and became key part of Cup winning team. Says McCabe plays very physical game, and doesn't give an inch to other players. Says that while it's nice to add players who all have playoff experience, it's just not realistic & he doesn't view it as an issue. THinks McCabe's game will translate well in the playoffs.

* Has no reason to be concerned that Knies won't sign when his college season is over - says team's focus is to help Knies at UofM win the National Championship, which was the player's main goal that made Knies choose going back for another year.

* Calls Trade Deadline the most fun time of year - says getting a trade that you've spent weeks pushing towards the finish line, finally get done, is really exciting. Seeing newly traded guys walk in & contribute & the way the other players react to new faces, excites him. Says he doesn't feel pressure, but a duty in his role to do everything he can to help the staff & players continue to improve and have the best chance to succeed.

General Manager Kyle Dubas speaks with the media following the Leafs' trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.

He has a relatively easy road to the finals. Whoever makes it from the east will be black and blue.

You think they'll wear these?
