With the state of our D, even if a risk...its a must do.

Really no choice. Yes, the Leafs do have a potential "next one" franchise player in McKenna coming, but Auston and Willy are still here and still elite. This team has good goaltending even without Woll and the defence while old should be better than they showed under Berube. We also don't have our next two firsts and I think they're now unprotected.

There's no point in selling off and tanking, or being overly-cautious. If Raddysh hits, he's exactly what this team needs. Even without other moves on D, the group is now neatly tied together and should be capable of supporting our forward group. Yes Raddysh might turn out to be David Clarkson, but that doesn't seem likely, and if he does the franchise was screwed anyway. Might as well bet on the hometown kid who fits your needs to a T, and comes at a reasonable price tag.

It was my mistake getting pumped before the info came out.

With the cap going up, I was hoping AAV could be thrown around for team flexibility.

Makes sense that’s hope more than reality

It’s good players have more control of being traded these days. They aren’t just hockey cards
Wait....since you know zero about this player, you are judging whether it's a good or bad signing by his previous salary....and using that as your argument?

That is the very definition of ridiculous

Wonder what he turned down from Tampa?

I think Hedman is making 8m per, possible they didn't want to pay any dman more than $8m? Might have been the length too. You're welcome for narrowing it down to the obvious. Just reread my post and I realize I'm being Captain Obvious.... ;)

He popped off last season for sure but he was still good the year before.

Finished 38th in the league for PPG for dmen without being on a top PP.

I don't know if it would change some people's views to know that in 2024/25 he actually finished 6th among NHL D in 5v5 P/60 (behind Makar, Werenski, Dahlin, Fox and Hughes) with 1.49 P/60. A number that Rielly has only ever topped once (2018/19). Raddysh topped that this year, but only by a bit.

The main reason why his points were way up were (in order) more PP points (due to playing on PP1), more non-5v5 ES points (due to getting those prime point producing minutes that normally went to Hedman) and more ice time at 5v5.

So, if he had had the same deployment the year before he likely would have put up numbers close to last year. I doubt Toronto is going to have someone like Hedman to play ahead of his this season.

Current salary is a very reliable predictor of next salary.

Name another 29 year old undrafted D on essentially a league minimum one year deal that got 8.5 x 8 with trade protections for the next deal.

Has there been one that’s coming off 70 points and is a UFA? I mean regardless of how you feel. Raddysh simply peaked at the right time. He was gonna make massive money on the open market as a RHD

Phaneuf's tenure with the Leafs is seriously underrated. The guy didn't and still doesn't get enough credit, in my opinion.

That said, your post is still %100 correct.
He was a good player. He was overpaid and in a role he couldn't perform at a high level, but he was certainly effective. He would have made a great 2nd pairing guy at like 4.5-5m.
