Completely fine with this move. Never really understood the Minten hype, he basically caps off as a 3C but could very well be a 4C.

I like adding some blueline depth in our top four that’s under 30 years of age as well.

Welcome to the team Carlo!!!

Wish the details were known by now but whatever. We have an idea of what the cost was and I’m fine with it.

The biggest thing is that we have a legitimate top four defence core. We should be comfortable with either McCabe-Tanev or Rielly-Carlo on the ice. Both pairs capable of playing 20+ minutes. And OEL can feast against easier matchups on the bottom pair and play on his dominant side.

Really tidy business, especially with Carlo still signed and being only in his late twenties. Our D-Corps is set for the foreseeable future.
The current leafs D group reminds me of the big, mean, mobile and physical top 4 defensive core the habs had back in the 2021 playoffs when they went to the Cup finals. Each top two defensive pairing was frustrating opposing teams by stifling their ability to generate offense and denying them time and space in their own zone . They were physical, collapsed down the slot, cleared the front of the net well, protected their goalie and blocked shots. They did a wonderful job for their team.

2021 playoff Habs D :

Chariot-Weber
Edmundson-Petry
Gustaffson-Kulak
Merrill

2025 Leafs playoff D :

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Carlo
OEL-Myers
Benoit/Hakanpaa

OEL-Myers is a much better bottom three defense pairing than soft powerplay specialist Erik Gustaffson and Jon Merrill. The latter two defensemen are still playing in the league right now, I don’t understand why. And in the 2021 cup run, the Habs didn’t rely on those two as much as their big four (Weber/Petry/chariot/edmundson) to go through the postseason.

I know OEL-Myers pairing will contribute much more to the success of the Leafs in the playoffs. they will be more useful to the team and Toronto will rely on both of them much more.

I’m very curious to find out what makes this deal “complicated”

Like based on reporting it seems like the deal should be reasonably straight forward… Minten, 1st for Carlo (15% retained). What’s missing that we don’t know. Is it the Pens retained and not Boston?

Tanev is good. Remains to be seen if Carlo will be too and if that's enough to push the Leafs further in the playoffs than they've been during the Matthews era. People complained about Dubas giving away the future when he traded a bunch of assets to get O'Reilly, McCabe, Schenn etc. and it only netted us a single playoff round win. Now Brad has traded away two 1st picks and two prospects that were looking at least pretty decent for a OK 3C and a hopefully pretty good Dman.

Lets see if it helps much this time around when we sent out a bunch of assets to 'go for it' with the same core who hasn't done all that much for so many years in the playoffs.

Carlo i consider him like a modern Hal Gill. You will never say oh my good seing this guy but when game become closer and more physical, its kind of player you're extremely happy to have in your team.

Laughton is not a spectacular player but for leafs he can have a pretty similar impact than Blake Coleman when he joined Tampa. Not a flashy player, not an amaizing offensive player... A guy playing with a ton of grit, who will not be affraid facing a guy like Bennett-Tkachuk and will be extremely hapoy playing that role... you need those kind of player in playoff

I'm assuming the "it's complicated" came out because this deal and the Pittsburgh deals were dependent on one another and had to go through together given that we definitely didn't want to trade Timmins and then have the Carlo deal fall apart which would leave us with only 6 available dmen.

Plausible

Carlo is not physical in the 'brings it to you' sense, but he will and does take hits very well in the D zone to help clear the puck, and doesn't break down over it. That's where the size works in his favor. I've seen people say he plays like he's 5'5" and just wanted to mention that - we've all seen the little D breakdown over a long playoff run, Carlo rarely does and can handle multiple playoff rounds without 'wearing down', which you guys are hoping to see. At his cap and years, he's a great pick up, just not what the Bruins needed anymore since we're on the downturn.

Good luck with him, he's a great guy too so I'll be tentatively rooting for him to succeed even on the Leafs.
