If you look at the bigger picture of the D-core. The biggest thing I notice is the size and how cheap it is. But there is one guy who doesn’t fit into that puzzle. It’s Rielly. Not overly big, declining, making 7 million a year. Would not be shocked if he’s moved in the summer.

Maybe Morgan will play hockey again after this. He is out of shape still, he needs to get going

Much like the rest of the core, a lot of that will depend on performance down the stretch and playoffs. Rielly can be a very good player and one of the few that can actually contribute offensively.

Everyone will have a target on them if they fail bad again.

Reilly is 15 lbs heavier than McCabe at the same height, 33lbs heavier than OEL at an inch shorter, 26 lbs heavier than Tanev and now 5 lbs heavier than Carlo

He may not be overly physical, but Rielly is a big boy.

Also one bad season under a new coach with a revolving door of partners does not make for a decline.

Whole heap of copium going on here.
FLA and TOR have been back and forth in 1st all season, they added Marchand & Jones but lost Tkachuck. We added Laughton and Carlo.. No idea why we're all of a sudden the big under dog after today. FLA had the shock value today but I don't see it like we're screwed if we meet in the playoffs all of a sudden.

One tough injury to Bob and it's also starting to be rough for them. But that goes for a lot of teams with a top heavy goaltending setup.

Marchand chose to go there. He was brought there to counter us especially. Marner is having nightmares.

Their additions are better, most expect MT back for playoffs and it feels like this is cruise control for the Panthers (regular season).

I think we have a shot if the core can step up up, but I get why they'd be favored, even heavily.

A guy making 7 million a year shouldn’t need a decade to find a partner

I'm gonna cause some nightmares with this, but how much you like Carlo will probably depend on whether you hated Justin Holl or not.

You can basically copy and paste the scouting report from one to the other:

Big, but not physical, uses size and long stick to angle people off and clog the middle, absorbs a ton of hits, good on the PK. Complimentary player who needs the right partner to be effective.

I think he's better, but not much. Probably the biggest thing he has going for him is he's proven he can do it throughout the playoff grind.

Whether or not this is a good trade will come down to how well he meshes with either McCabe or Rielly. If it works with one of them we're laughing. If not, that's a lot to give up for a bottom pair PK specialist without much bite.

I liked Minten quite a bit, but that's more of a sunk cost feeling in him being one of our guys then anything else. I think he'll be a good 3c who can spot duty on the 2nd line moving forward. He was a good pick.

I'm not upset he was moved in this deal, however.
I like Minten too but really, his expected upside would be Laughton, who’s now here. We are loaded up for the playoffs, and presuming Marner and Tavares are back we are better next year than we started this year.

I agree with the posts that Trev has nicely remade the D corps.

Playoffs are going to be a war.

The best part of this trade is it allows the leafs to run Rielly - Carlo and Rielly - Tanev to see which pair click better. If you get Rielly going, you not only add Carlo but extract Rielly potential as well.

1 through 5 the Leafs D can be really solid if it all clicks

Don’t get the excitement, Carlo has a serious concussion problem, next hit might end his hockey career, not the top D we needed for battling tampa and panthers. Broons had been shitting on him for three years since he started getting multiple concussions.

The revolving door is because it is a struggle to find a pair that can carry him

I would be surprised if any team fleeces the Bruins in a trade, or in a rebuild. They know their hockey and have the objective approach to move on when it's time to move on.

Unlike some franchises who overpay for failure...

they dumped marchand to florida

Tkachuk-Bennet-Marchand 3 a-holes on one team if they play on 3 different lines thats non stop a-holery other teams gotta deal with and they can play hockey to boot. that pays dividends in the playoffs

boston doesn't have stockholm syndrome thats for sure

I think Reilly will be move in the summer if Leafs crashes out and Reilly plays below par.
Would send Cowan and Reilly for Hughes in Vancouver, lol.

Holl thinks he is a smooth skating Dman while Carlo is a beast. To be Carlo is Muzzin lite in that they are not physical like Scott Stevens but just tough to play against and clear the front of the net.
Carlo is nothing like Holl and I really don’t know why some make that connection.
