reimer seems ready to challenge for the starters job. I doubt reimer will be traded based on nonis comments today

Nonis was quoted via Dreger as saying he would trade anyone on the team if it helped the Leafs, can't be clearer than this.

Maybe not right away, or maybe not even by training camp, but if both Bernier and Reimer become #1G's somewhere down the line, only one will be left manning the nets.

Not unless one is going to accept a #2G salary and role.

Not happening.

We will make a decision on who to keep when we see who the better goalie is in 2 years when they need new contracts.

I promise you, Bernier will be the starter two months into the season. There was times where some kings fans felt he was there better 'tender for our team.

Scrivens is an awful goalie, so no sweat there. And the 2nd is a '14/'15, basically a late 2nd if the Leafs play to their potential. How many 45-55 overall picks become players? Not many.

So it's basically Frattin for Bernier. We all know what Matty Fratts brings, and what we're losing there.

Bernier may have stats that pale to Reimer's, but the eye test indicates that he's superior. Scouts agree, executives agree, and many non Leafs fans agree.

I like the trade!

Bernier could not hide his feelings about believing he could be a No. 1. And Reimer’s rebound control, puck-handling and propensity to give up high glove-side goals nagged at Leafs brass. As much as they were glad not to have overpaid for Luongo, the team’s startling team collapse in Boston must have made Nonis leery of coming back without a roster shake-up, and that meant not using Reimer and Scrivens for a full 82-game schedule.

I find this somewhat odd.

I don't really care about trading Frattin (he was decent but replacing players like that isn't hard), but Reimer played pretty great hockey last year.

I guess if you look at it from a risk/reward perspective it's a solid deal. Bernier could be a star, which is leagues beyond Frattin's upside. That being said you can't help but think that a trade of Reimer SHOULD follow this move.

Mixed feelings on this trade.

On one hand Bernier has great potential and to get a 24 year old goalie who has a legit chance to be a high end NHL starter is obviously never a bad thing. The price we paid was high but fair and, if Bernier lives up to the hype, could end up being an outright steal for us.

On the other other hand giving up young, quality assets for a goaltender after the season Reimer put together is puzzling. It's like the day after the season ended everyone forgot how good Reimer actually was. He won twice as many games as he lost and had a .924 save percentage. He then followed that up with a very solid performance in the playoffs.

To put his .924 save percentage into perspective none of Belfour, Joseph or Potvin had a save percentage that high in any of their NHL seasons. Not once. Even Martin Brodeur has only done it once.

You could fairly say that he did it in a shortened season. But remember in his first NHL season in 2010-2011 he had a .921 save percentage. And he won twice as many games as he lost that year too.

Even if you still have questions about Reimer after last season I'm still not sure this was the time to go out looking for an upgrade. It's a pretty bold move after the season Reimer had. Competition between goalies doesn't always make them better. Having two guys who want ice time can backfire too.

It's probably not a bad trade but not one that I would have made.

Er wow. That pretty much nails it. The only caveat I'd add is that goalies are assets, and if they have something lined up for Reimer/flip him, it could be very solid. If the idea is to go in with 2 goalies, I'm just not feeling it was the right time (but it could turn out to be amazing).

So you are saying Reimer should have gotten the Vezina this year?

Where would you have rated Reimer in comparison to the goalies who were actually in discussion?

Give your head a shake. That rattling sound you will hear is a loose screw.

Maybe you should read a little more carefully next time. He said IF Bernieir puts up BETTER #'s then Reimer THEN he would be a sure-fire Vezina candidate.

Love it because Bernier definitely holds more value than scrivens/frattin/2nd round pick.

Hate it because I believe in Reimer.

Bruins fan here who actually hopes the leafs do well. I think this is a great trade for the leafs.

Some of these people complain here though. We got a legit potential #1 possibly elite tender for a potential 2-3 winger that has always had consistency issues, a backup tender and 40% chance at being something pick.

Unless Frats becomes a beast PPG guy, we did extremely well and of course if Bernier shats the bed (not likely)

I don't like it. This move makes Reimer a little more nervous about his job security after just being essentially told last season that he was the for sure #1 guy. I also really like Matt Frattin, he could easily blossom into a 20+ goal scorer.
if that makes JR nervous he should just retire now.

man you guys are funny

I dislike this deal. Must hurt Reimer's morale. After everything he did for us we get another goalie with POTENTIAL (Not experience) to overthrow him as Number 1.
if JR can't keep the number 1 then he doesn't deserve the number 1.

where did Nonis say he just picked up a new number 1??

Will miss Frattin and Scrivens, thought both were capable players and they were developed from within the organization.

However, as useful as Frattin can be, he'll probably never be much more than a 3rd liner.

As for Scrivens, I seriously doubt he'll be more than a backup.

I guess Bernier in the long run is good insurance for now. You never know if Reimer gets another concussion that will derail his career. And Bernier has the potential to steal the #1 job. Plus, there isn't really a really decent goaltending prospect within the organization right now.

I think the Leafs are also a little bit concerned about Reimer's ability to control rebounds, which the Bruins exploited in game 7.

The departure of Frattin opens the door for more Ryan Hamilton or Jerry D'Amigo...longer shots for Biggs, or Ashton I suppose. Or, at the very least means MacArthur would come back which would be the smarter move.

Although it adds $2 million to the cap, so...might make it more difficult to retain MacArthur for more than 1 year.

Scrivens was not awful. Hes a backup, and performed very well for us in that role
