“It makes you feel a bit doubted as a goalie,” a candid Reimer told the Toronto Sun during a phone interview on Sunday.

The lingering question in Reimer’s mind: “By who?”

“Is it by the coaches? Is it by the GM? Is it by the media? You could drive yourself crazy asking yourself things like that,” he said.

“You just have to focus on what you can control and believe in yourself.”

To be fair, Dave Nonis insisted the deal, which sent Scrivens, Matt Frattin and a second rounder to the Kings, “is not a knock on James.” In the opinion of the Leafs GM, let the best man win.

A good article titled: Maple Leafs' Reimer undoubtedly fired up

How can Leafs' fans be disappointed, Reimer was top 10 save percentage as a starter this year, and we're hearing Bernier is better than top 10.

I'd say this move guarantees the 2nd. round of the playoffs, and more likely the Semi Finals.

Leafs were downward trending going into the playoffs, and i have a feeling that if we went the full 82 games, we may have missed out.

this pickup no doubt will help, but, we still need much more depth and talent down the middle, and in with our defense.

Must agree - sure the Leaf's improved in net, but need help in all other areas as well. Losing Frattin may hurt the second or third line unless someone else setups into that spot or is signed as a FA....however this team needs a first line center, a top winger or two and a shutdown D.

I hope that Reimer being fired up can bring out the best out of him and work on his flaws a lot this off season. Hes earned the starting role this year and i hope he earns his spot as the Leafs #1 in years to come.

At first I was upset about the trade but the more I think about it, the more I like it ... Essentially it's a hockey trade, "depth for depth" if you will .. Leafs have plenty of wingers and LA has two quality goalies

This will keep Reimer motivated, remember Scrivens started the season for the Leafs .. Plus neither tender has played a full 82 game season as a starter so having two good goalies that can push each other should result in the Leafs finally being able to have reliable goaltending year over year

Reimer's also had some injuries too, his concussion and his groin (?) last season .. Not to say he's injury prone but if he goes down again it's trouble for the team

I don't think it is possible to have such an improvement from the 8th. best save percentage (Reimer) to likely 4th. best in Bernier and regress in the standings.

its pretty reasonable for reimer to be upset about the bernier trade. he is a pretty mellow guy though. im sure he will tell himself to just play his best and hopefully that will be better then bernier. realistically i see him and bernier as fairly even so i would be surprised to see them just split the job fairly evenly. no doubt carlyle will just use the hot goalie though.

from a management position i dont see how nonis doesnt make this trade. goaltending is such a significant position, you need to have depth, you need to have 2 reliable goalies. if we went with a reimer/scrivens tandem again and reimer got injured for any reason then it could cost the leafs a season if we need to rely on scrivens for an extended period of time.

Reimer is and should be upset about this... hopefully that spurs him to continue his improvement and for Nonis to move him somewhere he can start.

For now... it's all on Bernier. I remember similar expectations when Raycroft came to town... remember those days? Good times!

I want Reimer to win this competition but in the end I don't really care who our #1 goalie is...as long as he is better than the guy we eventually trade.

It's been a long time since the Leafs have had a "good" goalie controversy.

Jon Bernier is a very athletic goalie...and one of the best attributes both share is their mental game. They don't get rattled very easily.

Reimer is a beast down low. Bernier is more technically sound.

This is a toss up right now..

Not a bad problem to have, if you ask me.

if Reimer can learn to catch and hold a puck, he can end up winning the battle for #1, but, until he shows the ability to do that, he's my 2nd choice.

Not feeling excited about this trade.
Frattin fell out of favour and we have enough forwards to fill in the vacancy. But I have a feeling he'll flourish in LA.
As for Bernier, haven't really seen him play but comparing the stats with Scrivens, it's pretty close. But Bernier is 2 years younger.
Don't think this will kill Reimer's confidence. He's proved this kind of thing doesn't bother him (Kipper trade talk fiasco).

I agree with this. As much as I like Reimer and want him to succeed, the only thing that is really important is that the Leafs win games. Now we have two seemingly great options in net. At the end of the season, it won't matter to me who got more Shots Against over the season. It'll only matter how many games the TEAM wins.

Agree, easily would've falled out IMO, they were slipping hard.

we don't need a top winger. JVR and lupul are those wingers for us, but if you are talking 3rd line winger, than yes I agree

no offense to Bernier, but at Bernier's current age, Felix Potvin had been a top notch starting goalie for four seasons already, including taking his team to the conference finals twice.

He also had a GM that turned Fuhr into quite a haul for the Leafs. Potvin wasn't sitting behind a goalie of the same age that would win the awards, he was also traded and made room for Cujo, guess Leafs never thought he could win the big game. You can go on debating all the insignificant stats you can pull out. In the end we are better in goal. For all the negativity you post there were at least three other teams on the bidding for JB, that's four NHL GM's who know more about hockey in one finger than your brain will ever comprehend. That in itself would hush a logical individual but this is HF boards and that is all that needs to be said.

the motto of losers everyplace... 'everyone loves an underdog'

what do underdogs have in common? they are used to losing, and do not expect to win. It is about time we stop being happy as underdogs, and try to become champions/winners or feared.

Already a big deal being made because we have two somewhat young, potentially very good goalies? Oh the horror!!

 Only in Toronto.

Neither are sure things and if we go into next season with a 1A/1B I'm personally very excited about that. This isn't a Luongo/Schneider situation at ALL.

Not to mention Reimer is a crash into the net away from another concussion (sorry love the guy but, it's probably true) why would any Leafs fan want to bet their cards on Scrivens filling in with a call-up from the Marlies for the back-up? I know he's been decent but he's no No.1 and a call-up back up is scary at this point thinking of next season.

I absolutely love this deal, and I hope Frattin proves valuable to the Kings because I'm a fan of his, yet I don't mind trading him for goalie insurance like this.

I certainly didn't want Bernier if it meant giving up our 1st because I hope this ownership/management is past that crap now at least until we're actually contending so I'm relieved we could upgrade our goalie situation for relatively little in the grand scheme of things. Very happy with this trade!

But.....it's the Leafs so apparently we can't make an enviable deal :shakehead

Big kudos to Nonis for making a really smart deal that should make our team stronger.
