I'm not sure, how much Tim Lieweke influenced this trade, Nonis said this trade has been on going since January, both Lieweke and Carlyle, may have been asked about this swap and approved but I think Nonis wanted to bring in a Goal Tender and I'm just glad it wasn't Luongo, or Kipper for that matter.

The Leafs "gave up a lot of shots from 30 feet out" because teams TOOK shots from 30 feet out WAY more against Toronto because THEY HAD THE GOALIE WITH THE WORST REBOUND CONTROL IN THE LEAGUE IN THE NET. It wasn't that other teams did a better job of "taking away" those far-out chances, its that teams didn't attempt them at nearly the volume they did against the Leafs, for obvious reasons.

Against an NHL goaltender, a 30 foot shot is pretty undesireable as a scoring chance because its very rarely going to go in and even more rarely will it result in anything other then the goalie either freezing the puck then playing it to a teammate or steering the rebound into the corner or open ice, essentially turning the "scoring chance" into a change of possession. But with Reimer, he mysteriously couldn't catch the puck or he somehow managed to create rebounds and dangerous ones on an alarming amount of those low percentage chances. That, right there, is why the Leafs GM felt it neccessary to make this move.

The Reimer fan boys can scratch their heads and be perplexed about this deal, and they can continue to pretend that the Leafs didn't have any goaltending issues, but what I just explained is exactly why they were kicking the tires on Miikka Kiprussoff, its exactly how they blew Game 7 against Boston (in a game where Riemer otherwise played great) and it's exactly why Bernier is now a Leaf.

More like those teams were given free rein to take shots from 30+ ft out by design due to the system that was being employed. They would just collapse around Reimer and leave the points uncovered, and that was pretty much a huge reason they lost that series to the Bruins. How many times were the Bruins defenders given freebies from the blueline in that series?

Can't believe people are upset with this... We just got an elite talent for pennies on the dollar due to his situation. Bernier will be fantastic, especially as the NHL is working to make equipment smaller for goalies. His athleticism will be on display.

Yes, exactly and Tim Lieweke prolly had a huge part to play in this as well with his L.A connections. First move under Lieweke and it's a big one. We're seeing his influence already.

Yet most of the goals that was scored was Bruins players crashing the net or beating Reimer glove side.

I know you guys may not think it now cause he was a backup goalie but Bernier is awesome. The only reason he wasn't starting was because of Jonathan Quick. It was bad luck for him that Quick suddenly became one of the best goalies in the game at the moment that Bernier was about to breakout himself. Trust me, he's going to be awesome. I'm a fan of Toronto anyway, so I'm glad he went here over Philly and NY. I know he's going to perform great for you guys.

You mean Gionta concussion? If I recall he wasn't playing well before the conscussion so not sure. Anyway if that was true, why did the management decide to play him if they knew the concussion would have brought down his performance.

Ask Ronnie why he brought a goalie back from concussion to play his 1st game against the Bruins of all teams when Gus was playing fine. It happens, when people get desperate they make dumb decisions.

I've spent the past hour or so scouring the internet for video footage of Bernier. After watching many videos I've come to the conclusion that Bernier is eerily calm in net. It's a little weird watching him play because I'm so used to cringing every time Reims went out to play a puck or cover up a rebound. The calmness he plays with is refreshing.

Kings fan just popping in to say you guys are going to love Bernier. He has a great attitude in the locker room and you can tell he's a team first kind of player. He's wanted his shot to be a #1 ever since he joined our organization and i'm extremely happy he will get that opportunity with the Leafs. I'm happy with the trade overall, I think we got a special player in Frattin, seems to be exactly the type of player our system was built around: hard hitting, grinding, heart, and determination. Definitely a win/win trade if you ask me.

I've never really had a "#2" team to root for, but I do now.

Enjoy him guys!

Remaining neutral. Not sold on Bernier at all and like Frattin. Also hate whenever the 2nds are dealt.

Guess we'll see soon enough

None? He personally called Bernier to welcome him. The Leafs have been after Bernier for a few years now, and "ongoing for months" coincides with the Lieweke hiring a few months ago.

It was reported the talks have been going on since January, Liuewiki(?) came on after that did he not?
