Improving our forwards is now far and away priority number one. We've lost Frattin and Komarov already, and Bozak and MacArthur are UFAs. I wonder what Nonis has in store... it'd be nice to see another trade or two by the draft!

I am really happy about this deal for 3 reasons:

A) Scrivens was never going to be a #1 goalie. It's nice to have two potential NHL starting goaltenders forming our tandem. (Reimer being 1A, Bernier being 1B right now). When was the last time the Leafs had two young goalies with starting potential?

B) Don't forget. GOALIES are also assets. Brian Burke was offered a first round pick for Reimer during his struggles last year but the Leafs politely declined. We can easily re-trade Bernier or Reimer and recoup assets

C) We'll finally settle the #1 goalie debate and move on by trading one of Reimer/Bernier. Reimer to the Jets makes a lot of sense during the next offseason if Bernier is everything they say he is. Pavelec sucks and the Jets get a hometown boy as their #1 goalie.

I know many of you don't think it now, but in a year there will be a ton of you celebrating this trade. Reimer's chances of being the #1 in Toronto ended today (barring injury). I don't mean that as a slight towards Reimer, but once you see how fundamentally sound Bernier is, you'll understand.

Good luck next season as I'll be rooting for Bernier to be highly successful with you guys and I truly believe that's exactly what you'll get!

And I will be rooting for Frattin to be successful as well, loved watching him. Hopefully both teams can walk away happy in the future after this trade. Only time will tell.

My mind goes to opportunity cost. Not that I hate getting Bernier, but could the assets we gave up have been used as part of a package to get a forward, or move up in the draft?

I actually don't like giving up 1st or 2nd round draft picks, it seems to me that the teams that become contenders are the ones who are patient and build through the draft

I agree with this - I'd also that there is an opportunity cost to the cap space as well.

Been hearing our 21st and Gunnar for Edmonton's pick, would love that trade but do you think Edmonton would bite?

I personally believe Edmonton will try to use the over hype of this draft being deep to flip there pick in trading down to acquire depth to there liking. What that will be remains to be seen but IMO that seems to be about right with an NHL ready prospect or young roster player like the Leafs just traded in Frattin.

Just don't see any team including a young core building block in any trade just to draft the chance off adding another. Makes no sense to me at all to trade any of Gardiner, Reilly or Kadri for the 7th pick in the draft.

And then Bernier craps the bed, who do you play?

I would keep both goalies for a while and allow one to emerge as a true #1G with no question marks, then trade the other.

Of course everything is a gamble to a point. I am imagining getting a blue chip Centre like Monahan. I would do it definitely

Sorry to say it, but Scrivens was not becoming Rask. There is no comparison to trading Scrivens like any other goaltender we have before. Frattin is a good player but again, we are dealing from a position of strength. At times this year we had a man sitting out while we have prospects who could make the jump soon or possibly a free agent (Clarkson) to add this offseason.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Biggs get a very good look at that spot, I feel he will excel in the pros whether he contributes offensively or not.

And a 2nd is a 2nd, you do not lose sleep over a traded 2nd. If that 2nd becomes a good player then it sucks, but we may have never picked him anyways. Its a lottery essencially.

Reimer is as good as gone, I like the guy, but this trade pretty much has put it out there with GM's. You want goaltending, speak to me Dave Nonis. You want to trade your pick, speak to me Nonis.

I have assets in Gardiner < Rielly
Reimer < Bernier

to make it happen.

Gardiner will not get traded for an unknown pick. I guarantee you that.

This is the new age of the NHL.

If your defenseman can't move the puck, it doesn't matter if you have star studded forwards...you will fail.

Gardiner and Rielly both need to be on the Leafs.

Id say Leaf management traded Frattin expecting him to reaching a 25 goal scorer, whether he does or not.

He'll get the opportunity to play with a real No.1 centre some thing the Leafs haven't had for years. He's had some injury concerns but with his shot and skating the could turn into a 35 to 40 goal scorer.

What cap space issue? Bernier will probably sign a 2yr ~2m so that's $3.8m invested in both goalie spots, thats 60% of what an average top 15 goalie makes... Pretty good cap management to me.

Honestly, I'm not a fan. Right away, the trade destroys Reimer's confidence. So unless, Bernier can actually take the reins, I don't think we are in good shape for next season

confused

I am a bit confused after Reimer's strong season? :amazed:

And Bernier wants to be a starter. This leave Reimer as a backup? Or do they trade him?

i liked frattin and see him as a solid 3rd liner with some offensive upside. however, this trade has the potential to reverse the rask mistake. great move by nonis.

excellent potential going forward while giving up as little as possible.

heard about this trade while watching the jays game. I like the deal. getting a potential star goalie for a, good back up in scrivens, decent young player in frattin, and a second in 14 or 15. which is our choice.

I love a bernier and reimer tandam in net.

Great job Nonis

plus many of you are overrating frattin. yes, he has speed and an NHL shot, and decent physically. however he isn't that great IMO. plus I am sure Nonis already talked to reimer about this. everything will work our fine IMO

If we would of overpaid for him then it wouldn't of been worth it with Reimer looking as promising as ever and like a legit number one. However with the price we paid to acquire a legit potential elite goalie I can't do anything but really like the trade.

Bernier is like Rask in a way, playing behind a Great goalie in Quick. I have always liked him.

For Nonis to get him at a relatively low price is remarkable. Goalies with this type of potential don't grow on trees.

Red light Racicot played behind a great goalie too.

that's not true... he's a professional and should realize that if he performs, he plays. it shouldn't be handed to him. having someone push him to perform could prove to be a great move by nonis.

remember, reimer has had big ups and downs and head issues... so one more hit could end up being pretty consequential.

I don't want this two young goalies battling it out to see who's number 1. We(Nonis and leaf management) have made a choice, that choice is to acquire Bernier to be our number 1. This choice will come with risks, but that's the chose they made. Riemer should be traded to upgrade our Defence or Center. Sign one of the veteran goalies available, and walk into the season with Bernier as your number 1. Worst case situation, Bernier is a total bust and we finish dead last. Draft the best player available and move on. Best case cenario, Bernier shows us what all that hype is about, and leads us to a deep playoff run.

Funny you mention this... however it seems the Leafs know what their priority is:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/spor...h-plenty-of-areas-to-improve/article11982638/

While they expressed confidence in Reimer, neither Nonis or Carlyle would entirely rule out adding a goaltender in the off-season.

“I think the strength of all hockey clubs are built from the net out: You start with your goaltending, then you go through your defence, go through your centres
,†Carlyle said. “And if we can improve on any of those positions, I would think if there’s a possibility, like any other hockey club, that we would be looking to do that.â€

The trade proposed though is Gunnar and our pick at 21 for Edmonton's pick at 7, I would do it in a second. That is Monahan territory

I like Frattin also, but think he was a 3rd line guy ultimately. We are trading potential for potential, and Bernier is the highest potential impact player of the trade.

Makes Nonis a big winner in my books. If he follows it up by getting Monahan or Lindholm, then he may just be the big winner of the draft.

In terms of team building and priorities wingers are at the bottom of the totem pole and the easiest to replace.

Goalies, top capable defenders and centers are your building block assets.

Nonis traded an expendable and replaceable asset (winger) for one at the very top of every successful team a goalie.

On having his priorities straight Nonis gets an A+ thumbs up.
