LD Travis Sanheim - Calgary Hitmen, WHL (2014, 17th, PHI)

Easily Canada's best d man and it isn't close. If they play him as the 7th, Canada will for sure not win gold and will struggle to medal.

Let's wait until they actually play a game that matters before we're calling Sanheim a #7 and saying Canada is a bunch of morons. Even if he starts out as the #7, his play should rocket him up the depth chart pretty quickly.

Braydon Point hasn't played a second for Canada yet, and is one of our top forwards.

I wondered why Sanheim didn't play much, but figure it's because he's a lock as a top defenceman.

Didn't he play the prelim game vs Belarus. Sanheim should get top PP time and a top 4 role, but he's not far and above everyone else on the team. He has the best tool-set and projection, but that doesn't necessarily make him the best defender for the tourny, I can see why Fluery would be trusted over him for example.

To me Sanheim is without a question the best defenseman on the team and one of the best players on the roster.

He still doesn't make or break the team though. Canada has enough depth that they could still win gold even if he were to not play a game.

I don't to watch a ton of CHL games so I'm not as familiar with some of the other Canadian defenders as I am with Sanheim, but it seemed to me that the consensus was that Sanheim was a borderline lock to be a top 4 defenseman and playing PP1. Is there any reasoning behind his lack of playing time, other than possibly either coaching or just that it's a preliminary game?

I'd bet that coaching is getting a look at others to answer any questions they might have about who compliments whom, or whatever, as I can't imagine there's much doubt about Sanheim's position among their top defensemen once the games actually matter.

He's arguable the best D man on Canada... Maybe I'd take Chabot over him but I think he is and will continue to be better than Fleury. Not a big fan of Hicketts or Hickey either... Dermott I have in the 3-4 but understand him on the bottom pair because of his age/lack of experience.

No reason Sanheim shouldn't be the 1 or 2 though. Same with Barzal as the 13th forward I really hope Canada figures it out and it doesn't cost them.

Hicketts tips the puck in his own net, and the Canadians throw him straight back out there down a goal to generate zero offense while Sanheim created more offensive opportunities in the 30 seconds he got with about one minute left. It was hilarious to watch.

Chabot-Sanheim should be the top pairing after watching the game today.

Actually Fleury and Hickey got the very next shift. Hickey iced the puck, they got stuck and Matthews scored the 4th goal. That was the ballgame.

As per Flyguy;

"He hasn't been on the ice for a goal against wearing the red and white this year (Summer camp, CIS games, pre-tournament games, today) and he's been on the ice for 10+ goals scored."

It's amazing that he is not being used more. Everyone only remembers him getting stripped from behind. Reality is, he is not used to anyone being faster than him and let up. If Canada is going to win gold, Sanheim needs to be used in a bigger role.

Hell, for D he was the WHL leading scorer last year, 2nd in the playoffs, and was leading this year until he got hurt. And he plays on a team that struggles for offense so his numbers are not inflated.

The Hitmen gave him and Faz the weekend off. They are resting with their families at home and will rejoin the team on Monday or Tuesday.

Faz is resting; Sanheim is throwing darts at a picture of Lowry.

Sanheim was a mess in his own zone at development camp. Continually getting beat 1 on 1. He struggled defensively with third pairing match ups. He was continually beat like a rented mule. The guy was an absolute disaster in his own zone. How does that deserve more minutes? It's not Lowry's fault he couldn't defend.
