Never said it was a bad thing. I have been extremely pleased with our drafting and I had Provorov at 5 in my personal rankings.

All fine picks. A first rounder, 2nd rounder, 5th rounder and a 6th rounder. Nice to see some of our later picks are doing well however, our forward prospect pool is average at best, which is a good thing, because if we had a really good forward prospect pool it would probably mean our defensive pool would be weaker.

At least we have 5 top 6 players between age 23-28 and 2 3rd liners aged 21 and 22.

So that's 7 of our top 9 under aged 28....so certainly not old.

And really, Raffl is 27, Gagner 26 and Read 29....so we have no top 9 player in their 30's.

But we do have to fill up the forward prospect pipeline. The D is set. We did the goaltending last year. Now we can draft heavy on forwards this year since we have 11 picks. Looking forward to adding more forward prospects to compliment our current D ones.

By not drafting forwards.

A little more complicated than that. Ghost was far from a lay up BPA first round pick. That was an amazing 3rd round pick. The guy is special. Sanheim is also a great pick and great drafting with a lot of others players that different fans had higher than where he was drafted. Provorov was on the top of the flyers board after the obvious top two picks. There were plenty of rumors having the Flyers trying to get to third to get him. Instead they got who they wanted without giving up assets. Also good drafting.

In the WHL, there are only 3 guys over a PPG:

Hickets...1 pt over a PPG
Provorov ...10 pts over a PPG
Sanheim...15 pts over a PPG!

AND Sanheim plays on a team that scores about a goal a game LESS than Provorov.

Just think, one of Ghost, Provorov or Sanheim will be the 3rd best prospect we have on D. So either:

Dman breaking NHL records
Best all around D in Jr
Most offensive Dman in Jr

....one will still only be the 3rd best. Love our future D!

Very good point. Crazy that one will be the worst of them all. I would think that would be ghost which mind boggling.

Yeh, just need to add a potential top six forward or two at the draft this year. Konecny is the only real high end we have... everyone else is really 2nd line at best realistically.

as with Laughton, Cousins, Leier, Aube-Kubel, Lindblom, Fazleev, Marody, Kase, Martel, Dove-McFalls, Vorobyov & Goulbourne already in the system we should be fine for middle and bottom six options going forward.

It would not surprise me if Hextall went forward with each of our first three picks and ended up picking ~7 forwards in the draft.

With us still scouting Drouin, I could see our pick being used as the main piece in that deal. Instead of waiting 2-4 years for a prospect to develop, you get a NHL ready Drouin. And what we have seen, is that if Gagner can handle Couts protecting him defensively, he can help protect Drouin.

Would not surprise me.

Voracek Giroux Simmonds
Drouin Couts Schenn
Laughton Cousins Konecny
Raffl PEB Read
VDV

MDZ Gudas
Provorov Ghost
Schultz Streit
AMac

Given that, as others have mentioned, Konecny is really the only high-end offensive prospect and the defensive/goalie depths are pretty well stocked, do you figure Hextall moves into the first with another trade in order to get another top forward prospect? Let's just say we pick the middle of the first round, given where we are in the standings. At that point, between a guy like Streit who could be dealt in the offseason and the two 2nd round picks, I have to think Hextall moves up to get another guy with top 6 potential. While NAK and Lindblom both appear to have 2nd line ability (likely as complementary, two-way players more than the catalyst) they're not bonafide top 6 guys like Konecny. Adding a couple of high end forwards in this draft would be huge.

I am sure he will try.

But really, we have 1 spot open if you look at the lineup above...the Drouin spot. I really think Hextall will try and use our 1st to get immediate help that still fits our rebuild. And the fact the we are still scouting Drouin tells me that Hextall is trying to acquire him.

As for getting a 2nd 1st rounder, it likely won't matter much with our current roster. In fact, I would say that after our 1st rounder, then the next guy drafted who have top 6 talent are more likely to be replacing guys once they leave...like Simmonds for example.

Simmonds is a UFA in 3 years, and anyone we draft in the late 1st/2nd rd likely won't be ready until then. And by that time, Schenn and Konecny could be the top 6 RW and Simmonds on the 3rd line and then us looking to replace him.

All speculation though. Adding 2 top 6 would be great....1 right away and 1 in a few years would be a great draft for us.

Anyways, this thread is about Sanheim so won't derail anymore. So glad we have the top 2 D in the CHL!!!

With the two points tonight he has 67 points in 51 games on the year.... 1.31 PPG.

One game left on the season and (if he plays) even if he is pointless in it he would finish the season with 1.29 PPG.

The last time a WHL Dman finished a year over 1.29 PPG was the 1995-96 season...

Sanheim was a week or so away from being born.

It's crazy how overlooked he has become..mostly due to Provorov's existence.

Finishes with 68 pts in 52 games....1.31 PPG...as Appleyard said, highest PPG in 20 years in the WHL. Yet due to Provorov being a Flyers pick as well, he is overlooked.

Shea Theodore won Dman of the year last year with a 1.11 PPG.

Sanheim had most points last year in the WHL, 2nd in the playoffs, then best PPG this year. So glad we have him in our stable.

Soon to see Travis Sanheim in a Phantoms uniform after the loss tonight to Red Deer.As well as Fazleev?

Well, I watched Sanheim play a couple games with the Phantoms this past spring. How did you guys think he looked? 3 points in 4 games is great. I think he looked a little weak/tentative at times (especially in the D zone), but if he can fix that, he'll be a fantastic player.

Looks like a poor man's Joe Hicketts.

Definitely needs to get stronger- specifically his lower body so he can anchor his long frame against opponents. That's been the focus since he's been drafted, so he'll get there eventually it's just a matter of how quickly. He's 6'4 200 pounds but is still pretty immature physically.

I agree he was pretty tentative his first few games in the AHL, but he was awesome in the last game, creating several chances offensively. He has an uncanny ability to get himself and teammates into advantageous positions in the offensive zone.

Agreed. I worry about him because he had the same weakness/tentativeness in his junior career. Hopefully he can pull it together and gain some aggressiveness.

I wouldn't say he was tentative in junior. Far from it in my opinion. He's just not a physical player by nature and if you expect him to be one, you will probably be disappointed. He more than makes up for it on the offensive end though. His hands for a 6'4 defenseman are ridiculous.

I've watched him quite a fair bit live as I goto hitmen games quite frequently.

He still has to improve in the D zone as all young D do, but I agree about his hand's and offensive IQ is pretty damn high aswell.

Most Flyers fans expect him to spend the year in the AHL to gain experience, strength, and lots of icetime.

This is hopefully Provy's year....with Morin making an appearance after X-Mas. Sanheim in Oct. 2017.

Also, in the future, having Ghost and Sanheim paired with Provy and Morin will give balance to the pairings.

I don't think "tentative" is the word I'd use, but his defensive style can definitely be characterized as passive, so I know where you're coming from.

That's how I would describe it based off his AHL play including an in person viewing.

Once he gets acclimated to the league and continues to get bigger and stronger, it should get to a passable level. Offensive game is really high end.

Please, other teams have families too
