I love Hextall for drafting this kid. When was last time Flyers had a prospect of his calibre? If he's not in the NHL next season, highly doubtful, he will get his recognition when he is the best player at the WJC. :yo:

I really don't think his game is really all that raw. Physically? Yes. His body is immature right now and will take some time to develop. I still don't see this kid playing much in the AHL, if at all.

I'm eager to see why that scout thinks his game is raw. He is a stick right now, once he puts some weight on he'll be NHL ready.

Pre-Christmas 2014 would have been before he went to WJ camp and he was playing some of his best hockey of the season at that time.

Play has come miles from where it was pre-Christmas. Night and day for me.

Flyers have a gem here, even if he'll need a bit more time than some fans might want. I still think he's quite raw, which is scary considering how good he already is.

Thanks, It looks like the Flyers hit a gem where they picked last year.

It will be interesting to see what he comes to camp at for weight and height.

I've said it on the Flyers board, I think he is a dark horse to grab a spot at training camp. He comes in 10-15 pounds heavier and he has a legit chance. If he is still skinny just send him back to juniors and have the coaches and management work on the details of the defensive side of the game. I wouldn't write him off yet to be sent back to junior although I think it is likely.

Gotta get him on the Morin diet!

We have lots of guys already signed for next year then have Morin and Ghost knocking on the door as well. He will have to really shine to make Philly this fall IMO. I have no issue with him going back this year and having Morin and Ghost work their way onto the team as the season progresses.

I think Morin is almost a shoe in for the team. He was inches away from making it last year and he progressed nicely again in junior.

Ghost I think really needs a year in the AHL or even a half season due to his knee injury. Just to get him back up to speed and then bring him up.

I see the Flyers trying to make significant moves on the back end this year clearing roster spots for 1-2 guys. I think those two guys could be Morin and Sanheim based on Ghost's injury and need to get back up to speed and development.

All that said, still think Morin is the only one that makes it and the others go back to junior/AHL.

This is going to be a tough series for him. He's a great skater and really steady with the puck, but has either been coached or moved away from any physical play.

Both the Tigers and the Hitmen are playing very physical hockey, and everyone is finishing their checks, even if they're late (a lot of no-calls on late hits both ways last night). Sanheim seemed to be really fighting through a bunch of those and was clearly getting frustrated. On the defensive side, he has a spectacular poke-check (funny how easy poke-checking looks when you're the best skater on the ice).

He's also gotten so confident with the puck lately that he seems to want to hold onto it forever, to the point that he doesn't have a play and it leads to a giveaway or simply not creating anything. I like seeing him wait for the play but he's got to make things happen when he has the puck (this could also be an aspect of him playing half of each game - he was probably close to 40 minutes last night, including OT).

I don't know the Flyers plan for him, but I think pre-season plus 9 and out would be the best development. He's a lock for the World Juniors next Christmas.

I have to ask those that see a lot of this kid and his improvement, if the draft were redone today, would Travis be close to Nurse...or is their still a pretty wide gap between them?

Nurse was drafted in 2013. Sanheim was 2014.

He'd be a top 10 pick and the 2nd D taken in 2014.

He appears to be outscoring the 6th overall pick in his draft, who is a forward on his team. Looks like a good one.

Sanheim has 13 points in 10 games so far (Reg. + playoffs: 77 games, 78 points)

Virtanen has 9 points in 10 games (Reg. + playoffs: 60 games, 61 points)

Not a stretch to say that Sanheim has passed Virtanen as a prospect. Sanheim is playing a much larger role for the Hitmen in their playoff run so far and has not slowed down his meteoric rise from the past year.

He's clearly a top 5 pick that no one knew about. It happens all the time. Giroux is in that category as well. It happens all the time with Kids. I just hope he's as solid as we hope. Because right now Hagg, Morin, Ghosts, and Sanheim fill all of the defensive needs of a successful NHL team. All complementary styles with high upside. Sanheim - Hagg and Morin - Ghost...Can't wait for the draft. After this season flyers might have one of the best prospect pools in the league after having one of the worst for a long time.

Christmas... 2013?

That's exactly what I was thinking. :dunno:

Pre-Christmas 2014 would have been before he went to WJ camp and he was playing some of his best hockey of the season at that time.

No, I caught him a couple times live in and around November and he was brutal. One of those games in particular he was horrendous. bad turnovers, sloppy defensive play. I also know that Team Canada was in the building for that game as well.

People get so offended when you mention one of their team's prospects had a rough stretch. Yikes.

He has been pretty consistent from what I've seen this year, every player has a rough game here and there obviously. Why do you think he's "raw", besides from a physical standpoint?

So two games describes his entire pre-Christmas play? He was playing some of his best hockey leading up to the World Junior camp.

The only games I would describe his play as "brutal" was his very first game getting returned from NHL camp and his first game back after getting returned from World Junior camp.

People get offended when you make off-base statements. He's been playing at a high level all year. The point totals have picked up due to usage more than anything. I would argue his defensive play was better pre-Christmas. He has gotten a little sloppy lately.

Again, a dominant game for Sanheim. I am pretty sure they screwed up the scoring and gave the assist to Taylor instead of Travis on the first goal.

Actually, nevermind. From my angle last night I missed the quick pass from Travis to Taylor and then to Stallard. I just watched the replay and caught it, so Travis would get the "third" assist on that goal.

Interesting note: the Hitmen scored on their first 3 powerplays (goals 2, 3, and 4) and their first goal was with the goalie pulled on a delayed call. Travis was on the ice for all 4, but was also on the ice for 3 MH goals against so he ended up -2 despite the great night offensively.

His first assist was exceptional - gloved down the puck at the blueline then made a quick pass to Helgesen all alone in front. Second assist was a typical powerplay blueline to half boards where Rankin took a shot that the goalie should have saved. Goal was a great play by Tambellini to make a diving pass to Sanheim who ripped a wrist-shot from the point, bar-down on glove side.

He's such a dynamic skater that he's creating all sorts of chances for himself, but lately (in the playoffs, and on the powerplay particularly) he's holding on to the puck too long. I think it's a combination of overconfidence and oppositions picking up on him as a threat, but he has developed a habit of holding onto the puck well after the play has slowed and he doesn't have an option. To this end, I'd like to see him shooting more. He's got a great wrist shot but does not utilize it enough. He's definitely a pass first guy but a hard, low wrist shot is not a bad play when you don't have many options.

I'll also note that his slapshot is almost comical to watch. It's a hard shot but just the way he shoots looks like a video game - almost like he's focusing so hard on taking a technically perfect shot that he's not "feeling" it. I can't really judge it because it's still always a good shot, and it's not like it's soft or anything, just looks... odd.
