The whole Red Deer's team has been an offensive blackhole this season, in particular the first 2-3 months of the season was like watching a season of Jacques Lemaire.

*= I don't think Sanheim would have had the same success he is having with Hitmen if he was on the Rebels to start the season, it killed a lot of players confidences'.

Why is everyone forgetting how badly the Hitmen struggled offensively towards the beginning of the year? They had a very rough transition period with the new coach. During this time, I'd say Sanheim was practically carrying the team. Virtanaen was still out from shoulder surgery and Tambellini, Helgeson, etc started very slow. One of the only other guys producing during that stretch was Chase Lang. It wasn't until Greg Chase was traded that Calgary really started clicking. I don't have time at the moment to pinpoint the exact time frame. But there was absolutely a long stretch where the Hitmen were awful offensively and Sanheim was one of the only guys putting up numbers. It's not like he was just a product of his environment all season.

The argument I'm seeing here is "Fleury was" and Fleury could be"... not "Fleury is". Completely ignoring the present and basing your argument on the past and what might happen doesn't make a strong case.

That's not the case at all. Read what I have written again if you want to continue the discussion.

But if you swapped them, I don't think Fleury puts up Sanheim like numbers.

Fleury is an awesome skater with great size and agility, but he doesn't have any dynamic offensive qualities. Yes he can skate the puck up the ice, but similar to Bowey, he gets the blueline and then the play dies. It's the end product that he lacks.

He's going to be a long time NHL player for sure, but the difference between a top 4 stay at home staple and a guy who can play and run a 1st unit PP is vast.

I completely agree - they are stylistically very different, and will play very different roles in the NHL. I think it's worth noting (for anyone only watching the stat lines) that there is another factor in decreased offensive production from Fleury.

Oh, it's hard to forget. I was ready to throw in the towel on the whole season by the Christmas break, which is when the Hitmen went on an absolute tear. I bolded an interesting note in your post - many Hitmen fans, and many posters on this board unfamiliar with this team were really upset with the Chase trade (on paper, moving a top-scoring 19 year old is a bad idea). It's since been really clear that he was part of the reason the team was struggling, whether it was on-ice or off-ice issues that caused the exit.

After that, there was a transition period while the new coach figured out his lines, and finally left Rankin and Tambellini together. Couple that with the Jake Bean surge, and the Hitmen had an excellent second half of the season.

Like you said though, Sanheim was consistent all season. Month by month, there isn't much variation to his game, and in watching the games, he wasn't putting up all of his points in lopsided affairs.

Sounds like he's going to finish with 1g + 4a for 5 pts on the night in a crucial game 3 win over kootenay. Was originally given the OT winning goal but it sounds like they're changing it and he's getting an assist.

Was held scoreless the first 2 games but exploded tonight.

he hs been great the flyers have a potential top 2 dman in their system.

What current NHL defenseman does Sanheim compare to / project to be as he continues his development towards being an NHL player?

Reminds me stylistically of Pietrangelo or Florida Bouwmeester. Button has used the McDonagh comp.

I think he can be a top pair dman.

Watched the game last night and wow. Kids come a long way. You guys have a real gamer on your hands.

Can't wait till other fanbases get a look at this kid, he really has flew under the radar all year and looks like a sure bet to a top 4 dman for a long time, and for my money he'll be a top 2 dman.

If I had to guess at the D two years from now as in the 17-18 season, I'd predict.

Sanheim-free agent/trade
Morin-Ghost
Hagg-MacDonald

I don't think anyone else from the current D will still be here.

Either way still excited about the future

I hope if you right and it's a free agent it's a good one seeing we will have cap space then I would love someone like Brent Burns

Sannheim, Ghost, and Morin.

Can you image in 2 years

Sannheim - Morin
Ghost - Del Zotto
Gudas - Schenn / MacDonald / Streit / Hagg / Manning
Could be very solid

Just imagine if they end up with Provorov or Werenski in June. I think they need a forward in the system more at this point but I also believe in going BPA so I wouldn't be at all opposed to adding one of these kids.

Or we add Werenski or Provorov at this years draft and call it a day!

Then have Freidman take over from MacDonald when ready.

Or add Roy or Carlo with Tampa's pick!

So many options!

Edit:A4 you are a ninja and best me to it!

I see Travis Sanheim has a goal and an assist tonight so far in the game against Medicine Hat.Anyone had the chance to see him play so far in this series? 10 points now through 9 games.

Play has come miles from where it was pre-Christmas. Night and day for me.

Flyers have a gem here, even if he'll need a bit more time than some fans might want. I still think he's quite raw, which is scary considering how good he already is.
