People are floating around the idea of him making the Leafs next year. Is this fire or just smoke?

All the reports are that he's playing well beyond his years in the AHL in terms of being well rounded and responsible. He skates well, and despite being only 5'11-6' he's up to 215lbs without losing his mobility so isn't at much of a size disadvantage

Personally I think there is a real chance that he makes the team out of camp, that chance may have been negatively impacted by Hunwick's play in the playoffs and last 3rd of the season - they may bring Hunwick back based on that

Very smart, high IQ, solid and mature player. Under Babcock especially he will look terrific.

My guess is he will start on the 3rd pairing for the Leafs next year and play his way up - the problem is he's a LHD and the Leafs have Rielly and Gardiner running the top 2 pairings from the left side. And Babcock hates playing dmen on their off-side so I do not think Dermott will be playing in the top 4 for that sole reason.

If Rielly was to move to the right side though, they'd make an awesome pairing.

Another year of cooking in the AHL will do him no harm and serve to prepare him even more. No need to rush this.

Just like Percy and Finn, right?
Wouldn't say guaranteed, but he doesn't have the crippling flaws those guys did and has been better at the AHL level than either. Finn just didn't have the mobility and Percy was never strong enough. Both of those are two of Dermott's biggest strengths.

agree that "all but guaranteed to be an NHL top 4" is an overstatement, he does look promising though. He's succeeded in the AHL to a degree that neither Finn or Percy ever did and as a 19/20yo in his D+2 where both Percy and Finn were still in junior (save for a few games in the AHL, played primarily in junior).

Dermott probably doesn't have the upside that Finn was thought to, thought of very similarly to Percy in terms of his smart/simple game, but is a better skater than either and much more physical. The AHL hasn't disqualified him as a prospect the way it did with Finn or cast doubt on him the way it did with Percy

I've never once said Percy or Finn were guaranteed. Percy did show promise, and I actually did think he'd be an NHL defender one day, but he went sour, especially with his constant injuries.

Regardless, Dermott is a better prospect than either of those 2 ever were. You can hold me to my prior statement and try and bring it up in a few years if I'm wrong. But I truly believe Dermott will be a top 4 defender. Just watch him play.

If anything though, leafs management has shown that if they believe a young player is ready and earns a roster spot, they'll make a spot for them whether or not a veteran ends up loosing one. Imo from what I've seen out of Dermott with the Marlies this year, he's going to be a big addition to our blueline next year and will be an upgrade over hunwick.

I think it could go either way, typically Babcock has let prospects wait a while in the minors before getting to the big club and the management group in general seems to like to make slow, calculated decisions...but if he's ready and he earns the spot, I can see it going that way too

There's some flip sides too, like Leivo has more than earned a spot in his time this year, but Babcock refuses to let him in to the lineup even when there was an injury. Hard to say which way it'll go, but Dermott was drafted under this regime and there's less competition on D than the wings

Ofcourse Dermott puts up a night like that after a high praise from me the night before
1G, 9 Shots

seems to be starting a bit of a pattern as a guy who raises his play for the playoffs, especially in the opening round

Every time I watch this kid I see Morgan Rielly

I'm anxious to see what his shot suppression stats look like once he gets to a league that keeps them, Morgan Rielly's skillset even with less offensive upside in a package that can shot suppress against good competition is an exciting idea. Not sure if Dermott quite has Rielly's wheels either but still a good skater

To me it's Jonas Brodin. Just a not fancy guy with no weaknesses & ++skating.

ya I like this comp better for Dermott than Rielly

Seems like the Rielly comps are more because they look similar (both sorta squat/thick and about the same height) with sort of similar tools (good skating, propensity to join rushes and use wrist shots as the primary rather than slap)

Percy was pretty much set to be a good 4/5 D man with potentially more to offer, however injuries came knocking.

Finn just never could skate.. people were excited because he dominated his last year with Guelph, but numbers don't trump bad fundamentals.

Dermott is like a blend of Percy and Finn, although Percy was/is(?) more poised and Finn a PP quarterback.

The good thing with Dermott is that he can skate well and hasn't really had any nasty injuries to date.

He will be a fixture on the Leafs in 2018-19 for sure.

my comparable for him is dan boyle

don't think he will hit the numbers he did in any way... just how i see him play
