I'd like to know how he's actually doing in the AHL as opposed to recycling storylines from previous failed defensive picks made by the same organization. Obviously those names around him boomed and made a big breakthrough in the NHL, and hindsight may prove that sliding down to grab Dermott, Dzierkals and Bracco probably wasn't worth the trouble, BUT I still want some real breakdown.
In 34 games this season with the Marlies his current stats are 1 goal, 14 assits, 15 points and is a +2.

I went out to watch the Marlies live today and was pretty happy with what I saw with Dermott. They rolled him out there with Corrado as the second pair and he played a smooth two way game, sort of a quieter Morgan Rielly. Lugging the puck up the ice out of trouble, good skating, not the best shot from the point but he did good work controlling the puck from the point, positionally sound and played a ton more than Andrew Nielsen, who wasn't on the ice much at all.

I've said it before with Dermott....let him quietly develop,I would love to be surprised.

No kidding, we just need a fa(ala Polak) to plug in a few holes until the likes of Neilsen, Valiev, Middleton and Dermott are ready for 5-6 D duties.

..... and Dermott has a better shot then Rielly! Tells you how much Riles has to work on his shot. Yesterday he attempted a one time that made Hughson literally pause and almost laugh mid commentary. It literally seemed to go almost perpendicular to him.. .and he was above the top of the circle. I'm sure it was on edge or something, but still was humorous.

I can see your frustrations. Although I do agree that the trading down storyline is intriguing, I am very curious to see how Hunter's trading down works out for us. It's a bold move, that seems to be a little cocky/so I personally am very interested.

As far as Dermott goes, he looks like a replica to Rielly in size... with a tiny bit more sand paper to his game, and less skating ability/he does seem to be taking the Rielly development path though/playing very safe defensively and not taking a lot of risks offensively.

He played well yesterday against Albany. Good mobility and positioning, got crossed up a couple time but he's paired with Corrado so they might need some time to get comfortable with eachother. He's not particularly flashy but gets high marks for being steady.

I've seen him play a couple of times live this season and he was quite easily our best defensemen down there in my viewings of him. Nielsen was maybe more of a threat offensively, quarterbacking the powerplay with his big shot, but it was Dermott who was making an impact every shift in all situations. He's smart, steady, and a strong skater that plays with an edge. Similar build to Rielly and they have similar traits but I would say Dermott is the more steady one defensively and has more sandpaper to him. I wouldnt put him in Rielly's class when it comes to skating abilities though.

He's a better prospect than Nielsen

I think they're different - I'm not sure who is "better". Dermott seems more likely to become an important NHL regular and is closer to being ready for the NHL. I still think Nielsen's absolute ceiling is higher, but he is less likely to get there and will probably need more time. This is why ranking prospects is so difficult.

I like what both guys are doing, and I hope the Leafs only bring them up when they're ready, and not because the current defence is so bad.

Scored a nice goal yesterday to double his goal total. He's hovering around a PPG since returning from his high ankle sprain (10 games or so).

hes up to 200 pounds which is good
He's filled out big time. Pretty sure he's closer to 210lbs honestly and it's allowed him to play with more of an edge in the pros, which he liked to do in Erie.

Like the other poster said they're different, but I also prefer him to the latter right now. Dermott's mobility and two-way game projects so well to a 2nd pair D at the next level. Nielsen is more of a project with a slightly longer timeline.

People are floating around the idea of him making the Leafs next year. Is this fire or just smoke?

I don't think he starts with the Leafs, but it seems probable at this point that he will play for them at some point. Injury Call up, and it's up to him whether he sticks, or not... he still needs some D zone work, but otherwise he could make it.

He's already good enough to be a Top-6 guy easily. All speculation though, but I'd love a Dermott - Carrick bottom pairing next season.

I'd rather a veteran to help Dermott break in, I like Carrick but not enough for this pairing to make sense.

All depends on how good of a camp he has. He has the tools to play, skating and high IQ are his calling cards all he needs is NHL game exposure and he'll be a full time leaf. Expect him to start with the Marlies but if he gets into some games at some point next year he might win a spot in which if he plays good he might win out that spot for good.

So would you rather Carrick play in the Top-4 or sit in the pressbox?

Well, before playoffs Carrick would be paired with Rielly/Gardiner. I'm guessing that poster would prefer him play with one of those 2 and Dermott play with a vet (Polak). Not saying I agree or disagree but I think that's what he could possibly be getting at. All depends on if we add to the blueline this off-season or what happens in camp/start of the season. People think too much in absolutes when it comes to hockey, it's not black and white, there is a ton of grey.
