LD Travis Dermott - Erie Otters, OHL (2015, 34th, TOR)

I've been very happy with his progression this year. He looks like an absolute beast so far in the playoffs this year as well.

Would not be shocked to see him make the team out of camp next fall.

Dermott looked fantastic tonight. Great at both ends of the ice. He looked very poised and his decision making was excellent. Babs had him on the 1st PK unit the last half of the game and he was solid. He has a real good shot at making the Leafs and could really open some eyes.

Easily one of the most underrated prospects leaguewide which is somewhat understandable considering the infusion of young talent the Leafs have had the past year or so. Skates well, good puckmover, sound positionally, will take the body. Not going to be a star but will most likely be a top 4 staple that can be put in any situation. He was fantastic last season with the Marlies and has played really well so far in preseason. I'm not making the decisions but I definitely think he should make the team out of camp.

No regrets whatsoever about trading down from the Konecny pick to get this guy. Better player, and better fit for the Leafs.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Better fit for the Leafs I will agree with though. Toronto has no shortage of quality wingers at this point.

Why are you laughing?

Dermott is going to be a damn good D.

Because after having a damn good Juniors career, Konecny is already a damn good NHLer. He was 2nd among Flyers forward in ES scoring last season as a 19/20 year old. He will only get better and his opportunities to produce will only grow.

Calling Dermott a better player is laughable. For one, it's difficult to compare defensemen to forwards. Two, Dermott hasn't proven a single thing at the NHL level yet. Three, he doesn't project to be a top pairing defensemen. A solid middle pairing guy is way more realistic.

That's all very true that Konecny has proven himself and Dermott hasnt but this isnt the case of 2 prospects that are in different stratosphere's talent wise. I would say a very fair assement on both ends would be that Konecny turns into a very good 2nd/possible 1st liner and Dermott a top 4 D. Saying Dermott is the better player is certainly premature but to straight up laugh at the thought of it being possible is either overrating Konecny or underrating Dermott.

Most likely they have pretty similar value as NHL players. I think this all gets back to the original point that Dermott has been severely looked past for whatever reason but hes really friggin good.

OMG Konecny is the best playa EVA!!!!

These past 2 reactions are exactly proving my point just how underrated Dermott is.

I was asking if that is infact what he meant. I love dermott and think he is an unreal player.

Better player no, better fit, i definately agree

This is fair and more reasonable. :)

That's far from being set in stone....

It is until Dermott proves otherwise. Konecny is expected to be better and currently is. No guarantee that is always the case, but in no way should it be controversial to say it's the case now.

You can praise Dermott's progression and performance without making baseless claims to him being better than another player he isn't better than.

I think a lot of posters from other fanbases are going to be very surprised at Dermott this season. He is a lot better than many are giving him credit for. It is too early to say who will have the better NHL career, but it is far from decided whether or not Konecny will be the better player. This kid is a complete d-man, and his strengths are the things that thrive in the new NHL.

For all a player that was coined a better player than Konecny by some, he was sent down to the AHL by the Leafs. Reading his preseason reviews, thought he was a shoe in to make the Leafs Defence in his D +3 on a team that had many openings for D men.

Really? Because there was 3 players battling for one spot in the top 6. The two swedes, Borgman in particular, had a very strong camp.

Leafs had one opening, not many. They also had three strong candidates vying for that spot. I believe I said several days ago that I thought Dermott had the best pre-season of the 3, but that Rosen was likely to get the spot (followed by Borgman). No real surprise that the final spot is still being fought over by a 23-year-old and a 22-year-old who both have significant pro experience over a 20-year-old. I also feel that other considerations may have been a factor - such as I feel they may believe that Dermott is the best candidate to play with Liljegren in the AHL (if Liljegren stays in the AHL)

I wont criticize Dermott over not making the team. I just watched Sanheim have an outrageous preseason after a strong year in the AHL last season and he still appears to be heading back to the AHL for at least the start of 17-18. Politics and Waiver status work against these young guys sadly.
