Not to pour too much cold water on this coming-out party, but according to Bill M., Gostisbehere was part of several Flyers 5's who were pinned in their zone for extended periods. I didn't see the game so I can't evaluate his perspective. Opinions from those who saw the game?

Okay my 2 cents.
Yes he did and he was not perfect in his end. However, please show me 1 Dman on this team that you can't say that about. Frankly the mistakes he made were about equal. Only Shultz and Luke were relatively solid in the DZ.

People keep talking about the mistakes that Ghost could potentially make. All I can think is, "have you seen our D play?". They ALL make mistakes constantly. At least he has the speed to keep up with the skilled players. It's pretty easy to see that Ghosts defensive issues are because he's new to the team and still isn't strong enough. I have 0 doubts that this kid is a top pairing Dman.

Actually Manning made far more mistakes than Ghost did. DZ turned the puck over and fell a few times, same with Gudas.

Some people are acting like the mistake ghost makes are an exception from the rest of the team. Quite frankly he's right where everyone else is. By end of the season he'll be paired with Shultz. Which is what they should do ASAP.

Having said that L.Schenn has been playing better than I've seen him play for a couple years since being paired with Shultz.

I think people mentioning the mistakes that Gostisbehere made last night, and the mistakes he will inevitably make in the future, are only pointing them out to somewhat temper expectations.

I'm a very big fan of his, but he is very young and inexperienced (at the NHL level) so there is no guarantee he will be able to play relatively mistake-free hockey every game.

By reading some of the comments in this thread, he is being anointed the savior of this team and that is a lot of pressure and some lofty expectations to put on such a young player.

I hope he does meet those expectations, but it is also good to be realistic and point out that he will make plenty of mistakes (like all defensemen). Hopefully he doesn't get benched or sent back to the AHL because of those mistakes. Some coaches treat mistakes made by young dmen more harshly because they don't want bad habits to set in. Veteran dmen are usually given more leniency and a chance to make up for their mistakes.

No one is anointing him as the savior.

The Kings are kind of hard to move off the puck when they get things rolling in the OZ.

I really didn't think he was that bad, considering the size/tenacity of the Kings' typical game. He handled it better than any other Flyers d-man that I can remember last night, but then again, I was watching him pretty closely, so I'm certainly biased there.

Considering he was playing against Jordan Nolan around the net for most of his even strength shifts, I'd say he did pretty well. Very tenacious. Obviously he's got size and strength disadvantages there but he used his quickness and wits to outmaneuver him much of the time, even if the most he could muster was chipping the puck away toward his teammate, I'd say that result is better than Nolan driving it to the net or making a play with it.

Ghost is only a handful of games into his pro career and he's doing very well in my opinion. And on the power play he looks like a 5 year vet

I think I said this in his '1st goal' thread, but what impressed me last night beyond his skating was that he didn't often need to use it because of his reads, he was just flat out there before a King much of the time. And everyone knows about his tools, but last night, his confidence was on display, too. If he can keep that when he hits an eventual rough patch, he's never going back down. Kid is even better than I thought he would be, particularly this early.

That's what's impressed me the most watching him these last two games. You can literally see him reading the play out there faster than most of the other guys out on the ice.

This guy is so ******* poised with the puck on the PP, and in puck moving and puck handling in general. He's an excellent decision maker and is so far defensively adept.

Very, very exciting to watch to say the least.

The scary part is I don't think he has his legs quite to the level they were at pre-injury.

What's insane is that we have three other D prospects that arguably have higher ceilings. Ghosts play is making this season worth watching so I can't even imagine how great it'll be to have Sanheim, Morin, and Provorov up here as well.

what side do they all play naturally?

Wow is all i can say. Very impressed. The play to keep it in, and then the movement around the ice.. exactly what you're looking for on a powerplay. We all know he can shoot and wants to shoot, so no surprise there.

As for the rest of the flyers d prospects, gostisbehere is a different bread. Provorov and sanheim have offensive potential, but imo its not to the same level as gostisbehere. Thats no knock on them them though, terrific prospects in their own right. Giroux and Gostisbehere should be lots of fun to watch on the powerplay for years to come.

Great skater...one of the best I have seen in a long time. Reminds me of Niedermayer the way he glides up the ice.

Great shot, and he loves to use it. What I like most is how aggressive he is for a rookie. Loads of confidence and he knows where to go on the ice to get a great scoring chance.

I agree that Provorov's offensive ceiling may not be as Ghost's, but Sanheim definitely has a similar ceiling. He's very dynamic with the puck and skates just as well if not better than Ghost. Definitely check out his highlights from last season on YouTube

That is an extremely high IQ play by him when he skates towards Giroux so McClement thinks to move check him that way, sees that McClement turns back to Giroux, and cuts into open space so Claude can thread him a great pass for an even better shot.
