Everyone talks about how good Sanheim and Provorov(don't get me wrong, both are unreal!!), but I think Gostisbehere is a lot more electrifying and will put up a lot more PP points. The kid is unreal(and not just offensively) .... not only my favorite dman prospect on Flyers, but also in the NHL.

That youtube clip of him in the NCAA finals is awesome... I think the show he put on is one of the most impressive displays in a championship game by a player in all sports I have ever seen(Union won 7-4.. 1 goal, 2 assists, +7 in the game)

Shows that he can lift his game even more when need be.

Watching that game, he was fantastic. Easily could have had 6-10 points.

Also one of those games where a players +/- DOES mean something. One of the best individual D performances I have seen in years.

Gostisbehere - 26 minutes on the ice last night?

I guess they want to take a serious look at him, possibly audition for a regular season spot?

I'm sure they want to take a good look at him and see what kind of shape he's in after so much time off. I wouldn't read too much into it though, it wasn't a top group of d-men to compete with for time. Tonight he may very well get the least TOI for d-men with Streit/Schultz/Medvedev/Sanheim/Provorov playing.

He's still a longshot to break camp with the team, but I'm sure he'll make fans giddy like he did last preseason. He is quite the talent.

He seems like the long term replacement for Streit or MDZ, but I still think he's a real long shot to make the team out of camp this season. If they hadn't signed Medvedev it would be a different story.

I'm just glad he's getting slotted in on the right side in practice and in games since Morin, Sanheim and Provorov all seems most comfortable on the left.

Sort of crazy that he played that many minutes considering he has not played in 10 months. I guess his knee past the first test.

As stated above, Ghost will start in the AHL and be called up if an offensive D-man gets hurt or traded. He needs games right now but I think will be on the team for sure to end the year.

His first shift was a total train wreck which is concerning. He seems, at times, way too nonchalant with the puck but he is young and I'm certain he'll learn to pick his spots.

its his 2nd game in how many months??? im not concerned about his first shift... kid is unreal for being off for the amount of time he was... such a good player and I think Philly could really use him this year after seeing him in these games

Understood. However, he has shown that he makes poor choices with the puck in his own end. He tries to be too cute with it from time to time. He'll be ok because he obviously has a good head for the game, just needs to get away from that gunslinger mentality.

This name monster is as intriguing as a player as his name is intriguing from a purely genealogical point of view the etymology of his surname intriguing me, indeed. Shayne Gostisbehere. Wow. 8)

His surname is indeed extremely interesting.

It is a pretty rare South Western French name (it is basically non-existent outside of the areas south and east of Biarritz, Pyrénées-Atlantiques) of Basque origin, it would seem like there is only actually one family with the name going off French birth records.

Means something along the lines of 'the place where the holly grows.'

His dad Regis was born in France, and Shayne speaks decent French apparently.

His cousin (I was not sure up until I actually just searched it again right now and got conclusive results, I searched before a few months ago but did not find a conclusive answer.) Ugo Gostisbehere is a similar age and a professional soccer player... I actually came across him on Football Manager 2014 and when I searched for a photo due to the surname was quite surprised by the resemblance, they could pass as brothers really!

Great info! Thanks. So, it's a French Basque name then, meaning "The place where the holly grows"! - This all is very fascinating and intriguing indeed. I did some further research by Wikipedia and Google Maps to pin the accurate geographic place/area and get more info about Iparralde, that is Pays basque francais or French Basque Country which constitutes the north-eastern part of Basque Country. It is allegedly a popular tourist destination. So, probably I will pay a visit there one day and go fishing in the Bay of Biscay. Sound like a plan. :D

In any case, Shayne Gostisbehere, "the one who grows holly in his backyard", has left an unfading impression on me now. His name and his game. :D He is a name I will follow with a keen eye going forward. Splendid!

Edit: His cousin Ugo Gostisbehere plays soccer for a French fourth tier club Stade Bordelais based in Bordeaux. I learned a thing or two today. Wow.

That's what makes him so good though. The moment he loses that, he's just another undersized defenseman. You learn to take the good with the bad. He's a young kid. He'll make adjustments.

Yeah, he's not going to be getting shut down minutes any time soon, but that's really beside the point. He has the tools to be a special offensive player, you encourage that. Don't try to turn your Ferrari into a truck. That gets you nowhere.

We don't need him to become a safe shutdown defensemen, we just need him out outscore his defensive flaws... which it looks like he can.

BINGO... that's what makes him the player he is and why hes still around after all those cuts. He cant stop what hes doing. He provides major offense and that's what Philly wants
