The more I hear about this kid the more I think "Eric Gelinas" comparison. Anyone else think that's fair? Eric was never able to round out his game and stick in the NHL but he had an NHL shot and was big. Obviously hoping Shakir can develop and make this pick look like a great decision. It'll be a project but I like what he's doing in the K.

I can see why someone would compare him to Gélinas. He was a forward that was converted to a dman, has a booming shot, is big, skates well, etc.

With that said, Eric couldn’t of played in the KHL at 17 and despite his size, was one of the softest big man I’ve ever seen and the kid was totally clueless in his own zone.

I honestly think that Shakir has more upside then Romanov and he’s probably staying in Russia for the next 3 to 4 years. He’s a big time project and I think that if we’re patient, we’ll get a real gem. If we want him to come over to NA in 2 years, after his deal runs out with UFA, we might just screw things up.

Just my option

If he is playing normal minutes in the KHL I expect him to come over for the 22/23 season

Devils love drafting Russian d-men with impossible to pronounce names. Who was their guy last year? Ohtkanutyulk?
Okhotyuk
Ohtkanutyulk
8 letters and you got 2 right. I give you an extra point for having the 'k' at the end. So 3/8.

That's a solid D grade.

I am really surprised, that a person of your impressive intellectual level, ends up as a Rangers fan. :naughty:

One of the main reasons why he’s playing so much, unfortunately, is because there’s been a lot of COVID cases on the team.

The good news is that he’s taking advantage of the opportunity and rolling with it. Let’s hope he doesn’t get relegated to the bottom pairing and off the PP when everyone will be back in the lineup.

How did he play today?

I watched the game specifically for Amirov reasons, but when I noticed him it wasn't a good thing. Saw him get beat multiple times, chasing a hit and getting out of position, make bad passes that went for turnovers/icings, lost the puck at the blueline on the PP.

Maybe it was just today as I've never seen him in a KHL game before, but I sure wasn't impressed.

It’s only normal that an 18 year old kid playing in the KHL will struggle. He’s not a finish product by any means and he’ll have games where he’ll look like a horrible and others where he’ll look like the steal of the draft.

He's really bad at the mental aspect of the defensive game. It's very concerning. We will see if it gets any better. He's still young, but it's troubling. I thought he was a late second rounder... Though I thought Guhle was a mid to late second rounder as well

Jesus.... if you give Ken Daneyko 400 tries to say this kid's name right he won't do it once. This is gonna be a true heavyweight battle of Kenny vs the Russian language every night

First thing that came to mind when he was drafted. He will get a nickname real quick.

The name is not too bad once you realize Mukhamad is a different spelling for the root Mohammed. Mohammedullin is easy if a bit long.

Daneyko would have trouble with the last name Smith. He saw this name and was like:

Yeah, I figured from his name that he must have come from one of the muslim minority groups in russia. What is his ethnic background?

If I had to take wild guess probably a Tatar considering they make up like 30% or something close to it in the population in Ufa. But Tatars generally look more like say Nail Yakupov (who is Tatar if I remember right) in appearance. Either way there's a VERY good chance his family either converted to Islam many generations ago or was part of the general Muslim diasphora of the neighboring populations that settled in Russia and embraced the country by adopting a Russian style surname

Interesting. I thought they were the natives and the Russians were the invaders.

You may very well be right. I'm just banking on the fact many Tatars are Muslim and Ufa has a high population of them and that the religion spread very rapidly across Asia in less than 1000 years. When you look at the appearances of the indigenous population the way you said it makes far more sense considering southern Russians look almost Arabic in appearance

Shakir is either Bashkir or Tatar. Ufa is the capital of Bashkortostan where bashkirs and tatars are natives and that people are generally muslims. That lands are parts of Russia since 16th century.

More upside than Romanov is an extremely hot take and so wrong. Romanov looks like a defenceman and he did look that at 18. Romanov's game is way more polished and mature.

I think that they use term "Russian" about nationality, but not ethnicity.

Well, southern Russia is mostly ethnical Russians and some Armenians which would make for more than 90% of the population. While Armenians sure do look differently, but still not any arabic and they are as the largest minority still slightly over 5%.
