Playing in the KHL at 18 is very impressive, and he is producing at a beyond record level with 14ATOI. Has 30+ games to score two points to break the u19 scoring record in the KHL for defenseman, Orlov in 2nd

Think NJ may have gotten a steal here!

Yeah, the same as Montreal fans did when the team picked Romanov...

Different player, different skill. Have you seen Shakir play? Yes he has a good shot and he is big, but his decision making has a lot of holes. That is difficult to fix. I like Shakir and hope he does well but he is a massive project.

lets not forget Shakir was a forward not too long ago! his defensive lapses could be in part his age and raw learning curve, transitioning from forward to defense AND starting in the 2nd best league in the world

Since the Devils had three 1sts I love the homerun aspect here - I value IQ 2nd behind skating in my prospect evaluations and Im thinking Shakir’s lack thereof can be attributed to his unique situation

Sure, NJ would have loved to get a third or second and grab him later - but with his potential and the lack of a trade market, I love the pick!

I normally don’t like judging players by stats but this one is quite promising. Even though he does have a strong two way game he does have six points in 14 games. The promising Winger Amirov the leafs took five spots ahead has five points in 10 games on the same team.
The more I research this kid the more I like him. Textbook boom or bust prospect.

I don’t hate that the Devils and Jackets possible reached but I do think it is foolish to not at least try and move back. Surely there must have been rumors of other teams interested. If not it is just poor asset management.

This guy reminds me of an even more raw K'Andre Miller. Didn't like it when the Rangers picked this type, liked it when the Devils did because I view it as a wasted pick for a rival team, but generally don't like the player in this range.

Some people value these players for their theoretical potential, and others don't. We'll see. The pure athletic tools are there. Huge, great skating, powerful, big shot. Has other parts of the game to work on. Some think these things can develop, others think it's harder to develop at his age. There still remains a divide on these types of players.

Fitzgerald said they looked at both moving up and down but nothing worked out

So he’s saying they tried to get to a spot to pick someone else, but couldn’t, so they picked a guy they didn’t really want?
Definitely not, in fact he was heaping praise on Mukhamadullin and it was clear they had him very high on their internal list. He was just asked some general questions about the trade market, and said they were in discussions but nothing worked out.

The more I hear about this kid the more I think "Eric Gelinas" comparison. Anyone else think that's fair? Eric was never able to round out his game and stick in the NHL but he had an NHL shot and was big. Obviously hoping Shakir can develop and make this pick look like a great decision. It'll be a project but I like what he's doing in the K.
