Pronman actually dropped him in his latest rankings. I haven't seen anyone having him in the top 3 rounds for a minute. Doesn't sound like his combine went to well, workout or interview wise. Then again, all it takes is one GM either overlooking it, thinking they can fix it or not thinking it matters for him to go in the first 3.

Sean Day -- what happened?

I remember a few years ago he was considered a phenom defenseman and was expected to contend for #1 overall in his draft year...now I hear Craig Button(I know, sometimes he says things for shock effect) say that he's talked to scouts from multiple teams who say they wouldn't be surprised if he was a late round pick, if drafted at all.

I know there's some fitness issues but...what else?

Only granted exceptional status because of size. I don't think he's a top four D in this league.

To be clear, there are lots of players bigger that never sniff exceptional status. He got there mainly because of his skating, which is elite. He has had personal issues, but what has stood out is his work ethic. Tons of natural ability, but lacks the drive necessary to take the next step.

Gifted with physical tools / ability. But he doesn't have the work ethic and has off-ice issues. As a result, his tools and ability have dwindled. Some teams reportedly have him as a "do not draft."

While it seems like a stretch in hindsight to grant him exceptional status he had more than size going for him. Tremendous skater who with that frame and seeming offensive instincts looked like a stud prospect. He just never really put it together in junior and with his suspect attitude and work ethic his stock has dropped like a rock. I don't think he will drop as far as Ebert did (very similar fall from grace) but I can't imagine a team will take a chance on him before the 3rd round.

Almost sounds like Byugflien, both in stature and some of the issues that caused him to drop pretty low in 2003. He was never the prospect Day was, but in the year leading up to the draft he was expected to go in the top three rounds at least.

Personally, I'd take a chance on him with a 3rd. These picks are a crapshoot anyways, and he has more natural ability than anyone left at that point anyways.

He seems to know he has work ethic issues, however I'm not sure he knows they're a serious problem. He thinks he'll always be heavy and loves saying he's a first round talent. And really, how many players actually turn these really bad personal issues around? So I can see some teams not wanting to draft him at all but if he turns it around you'll get a top 10 talent in the third or so round.

Similar in the sense both were top 5/10 prospects who fell but Eberts issues were more than attitude and conditioning. He benefited playing sheltered minutes on a powerhouse Spitfires team, then fell apart when he had to he his teams go to guy. Ebert made people think he was a lot more talented then he was, while Day's issues are more him being unable and unwilling to actualize his potential.

He'll get drafted for his combination of size and skating ability as a defenseman. Don't think it will be within the first 2 rounds though.

He got exceptional status for a couple reasons. He had the size and skating, the OHL got less stringent on it because the previous 3 were so successful, and finally, they thought it could be a way to stop high-end duels from joining USA hockey. After Day slipped to 4th in the OHL draft and how it has played out they have again decided to be much stricter on who they would give exceptional status, particularly in regards to maturity. The Day situation doesn't look good on anyone from the Hockey Canada, the OHL, the Steelheads and Day himself..

Wow, Bob had him at 58, that really surprised me. I guess one or two of the scouts polled were higher on him than I would of thought.

I always feel once we get to later picks, some scouts overstate or understate their hand in lists like this. In Day's case I am guessing overstate

Pronman's latest re-rankings, behind a pay-wall. Have heard from others through twitter who rank prospects for a living he is on alot of teams ND lists. Gare Joyce mentioned that he wasn't in good shape in his write up of the combine. I don't think many want to go on record trashing the kid, which is basically what you are doing at this point.

Edit: Here a source on issue, says nothing about being ND'd though

I kinda hope the Lightning take a shot on him with one of their second round picks. They have a gluttony of defense prospects and I think Day would be a nice "in the meantime" project in a year where we are likely to go forward heavy. Guys like Koekkoek, Masin and DeAngelo are all coming along well so if Day didn't pan out then no harm no foul.

Best case is Day figures it out and we get a stud player in a couple years. Win win.
