I wouldn't take this kid in the first 5 rounds. Looks like a Ryan Pilon situation.

After that happened last year, I have no doubt that people will be a bit gun-shy about him. He'll have to interview really well for somebody to take a flyer on him in the late round.

The tool kit is there.

Unreal potential, but if his heart and soul isn't into hockey, then remove him from the draft board.

I'm highly doubtful of the unreal potential. Nothing but his skating seems to be above average, and even that is not unreal. He could be one of the best D skaters in the NHL, perhaps elite but his skating only looks unreal because of whom he is skating with. Once he gets compared to Karlsson and Doughty, his skating will not look unreal.

I guess his size is also above average but if you use it sparingly nor take care of it, then its hardly an asset.

The rest of the skills are meh, all the soft skills (leadership, work ethic, hockey IQ) don't even rate a meh. If you cannot outshine the league at the OHL level in these areas, its is extraordinarily hard to make it at the next level in any capacity.

I'm kind of thinking the kid isn't gonna get picked at all. Idk if I'd want to use any assets on him honestly.

Kind of stunned he didn't take the combine more seriously (even considering everything we've heard of him).

It was essentially his last chance to show something. What an idiot.

For some strange reason he still interests me.

I disagree. He's one of the best skaters I've ever seen, but that's all he can do.

Technically he still has a couple years in junior to do stuff. Does it really make any difference if he is drafted 31st or 210th?
31st picks usually get ELC pretty quickly. Either way, he showed his lack of commitment again. And after 2 to 3 years of it already I'm sure a bunch of teams have taken him off there board and flagged him as undraftable.

Yes. There are far better players available in the early rounds. I don't know if this kid will even be playing hockey in North America five years from now. The passion isn't there. The drive isn't there. The talent isn't there. People that like this kid are hung up on what he was 4 years ago and don't realise he's the exact same player today. He's made no improvements whatsoever.

I know it seems like the guy kicked my dog or something. I've been critical of him for a couple years now. It just blows my mind that there are some fans out there that think he's worth a second round pick.

2nd no way, 4th or 5th then I start considering it.

I said before the combine that the fourth round is the earliest I'd take him, considering it a throwaway pick for a project. After seeing the effort he put in at the combine, I would consider drafting him in the bottom half of the seventh.

At this point I'd consider just passing on him in general. Even mid round picks have value to them if you trust your scouting staff. Think there is just too much doubt with Day to do more than shake your head at and move on to someone else.

Just seems like one of those situations that leaves you surprised, but you don't get involved with.

I would only use a 7th round pick on him considering most players available in the 7th round are just as much of a long-shot as he is.

I wouldnt touch him with a 10 foot pole...not the message you want to send to your other draftees and prospects. Even though you dont work hard as long as you have talent we will give you a chance etc. Hes a long shot anyways

I'm as down on him as anyone considering what I've heard and seen, but I'd still consider using a late 4th or 5th on him, and would be fine if the Leafs did. To really get an assessment on the situation, you need to have in-depth interviews with him, scouts aware of the dysfunctional environment with the Steelheads (Day was a massive contributor to it, but others are at fault).

Off what I've seen I wouldn't take him, as he doesn't appear to want it, but to make the true judgement on him requires alot of information, we here don't have. Maybe he's making steps with dealing with his issues that the public isn't aware of and maybe he had a slight injury and couldn't prepare for the combine or, possibly he's still not putting any effort forth and believes he's doing no wrong. But I don't think anyone here without serious insider knowledge of the situation can make that judgement right now.

The guy is elite OHL I'll agree, but he has never even been considered the best skater in the OHL east yet. And a lot of elite OHL skaters do not garner elite at the next level, very few. It is one thing to compare him to OHL players, but generally only the top 10% of the best OHL skaters can make it to the next level, so yes he looks elite now, but at the next level, not as much.

I'd have a hard time ranking just skaters, but he certainly would not be in my 100 of all time, much less close to one of the best ever. He's also certainly not top 10 (D only) if he was in the NHL next year.

That said, I'm a huge proponent of drafting skaters, you pretty much need that at the next level. But it has to be continuous improvement. Every jump up everyone is that much better, and how good you look in comparison drops dramatically.

Care to elaborate on that? I feel like I've missed something.

They aren't a well run franchise, with certain people having too much of a say who shouldn't. Day has been in a feud with coaching staff for almost 2 years now, its a mess, he should be traded but as I've heard he refused to go to a certain team and was intent on forcing a trade to one of the two powerhouses. Considering how uncooperative Day has been, the organization won't cut him a break, and its unclear if the teams Day wants to go to even have an interest. Its an all-around mess, and the whole Day situation brings out the worst aspects of jr hockey. So they have been at a stalemate since at least November, and Day's conduct to make his displeasure known has pissedoff alot of people.

At a certain point it would get tough to pass on his combination of size and elite skating. Despite all the reasons not to pick him, I think he's off the board by the end of the 5th round at the latest.

According to his media interview from combine he interviewed with 19 teams - so clearly there is some interest.

Or morbid curiosity. Teams see a guy with all the physical gifts in the world and want to pick his brain to find out why he can't or won't play better than he has. He's certainly one of the most interesting prospects in the draft, in the way that a train wreck can be interesting

Hard to know the level of interest of all the 19 teams, but I do know for at least some teams based on what I heard at the combine, his interview was one of the most tense in terms of line of questioning. Some orgs just wanted to talk to him to get his perspective.
