2 guys behind him to cover for him this time? :P
Nope, clear breakaway. They already had established the zone, and he seemed to be drifting back to the point (understandable considering he is a natural D). I have no idea why he was at forward. I doubt it is a long-term experiment, it did work decently on the PK though, as his speed is always a threat for an odd-man rush.

Yikes.

Day was not good in the first Traverse game.

He's really fast, but he plays slow. He makes bad decisions and processes the game so slowly. He's a step behind, not because he's physically slow, but because he just does not read plays well and anticipate what to do.

That's why he was a 3rd rounder. He has growing to do like most kids. But if he puts it all together, he could be great. Worth the risk IMO.

Interesting analogy. I would tend to agree having seen may Steelheads games last season. The thinking part of his game does not match the physical part.

Biggest hurdle in his development. If he can't pass that, then he won't get any better fast.

If he can work on that and make progress, he should see pretty good development, considering the quality of tools he has at his disposal (aka his elite skating)

He had a better game today though, so that was nice.

The Traverse tournament is a step up from OHL play.... so it would take him some adjustment time.

That said, its never been his strong suit either.

Looked better today, not nearly as slow as he looked in the first game (might have been nursing an injury or illness in that game as they originally had him as an injury scratch). Still saw something that he's been dinged for before and needs to work on...puck slipped off his stick in his own zone as he was drafting backwards and instead of a strong reaction to regain it or try to defend the opposing player bearing down on him, he kinda gave up on the play for a second like he was really frustrated with the mistake and was just throwing up his hands in disgust

Seems like he sometimes just needs to work on playing through things. Mistakes happen, just keep working and get the puck back, etc.

All this being said, this was probably his best game in the three game span. So it seems like he got better each game.

Again, small sample size. But it's nice to see. Once he goes back to the Steelheads, I hope he starts working on those mental hiccups.

The first game he was really bad. Since then, he's played better the next two games. Today was his best game, and he was pretty good today.

You okay, PB?

Yeah, I'm okay.

I understand what you are trying to point out, but I was making the point that Day's best game was today, and in that game he played well. He could've been terrible in the first game, mediocre in the second one, and average in the third game, if I just said today was his best game, and didn't say how well he played in this game. I wanted to make sure I was saying that he was good in this game.

He looks like one of those guys who when he's on his game, makes everything look effortless. Skating, passing, etc. Just glides smoothly from one thing to the next.

When he's off, he looks slow, lazy, and disinterested.

Part of that is just the playing style and part of that will be trying to even out his game so he's looking good, smooth, and effortless most of the time.

Part of it is that he has incredible talent. The other part is that he was one of the worst conditioned atheletes at the combine. When he's feeling good he's real good, but his conditioning and lack of it hurt his game. Whether he starts to take this more seriously as he matures remains to be seen.

And he makes bad decisions.

But yeah the guy has some of the best technical skills. He is the definition of having all the tools, he really needs to put that toolbox together though.

This is the biggest of his problems.

He fixes that, he'll be in a much better place.

Day was sent back to the Steelheads from the Rangers training camp. Didn't play a preseason game. Mostly a camp to just learn and play with the big boys.

That bad, eh?

Eh. I think AV wanted to mostly play the guys who were either going to be in Hartford or be up with the Rangers. There was a lot of competition already, and it's not like Day was competing for a spot to begin with.

Everyone else (read: junior players) was just up at camp for getting a taste of practicing with the big dogs. He's not the only one who didn't play a game.

For Day it may of been in the interest of showing him how to be a pro and encouraging him to be professional. Also, wouldn't be surprised if Sauga moves him to improve their offence/just general time to move on.

I definitely agree with this. Wouldn't be surprised if Drury/Gorton/etc sat down with him at some point and talked with him about being a pro and whatnot. And then AV/Beuk talked with him about mentally being in the game and being engaged 100% of the time.

I also hope he does get traded from Sauga. Doesn't seem like a good fit anymore.
