I get the argument about the academics, that is almost an entire semester. Unless he has virtual options for all of his classes it would be incredibly difficult to manage.

From a playing perspective its a tough call, when does the NCAA envision starting their season? Also as we have seen with all other leagues it will likely get pushed back as well so maybe he wouldn't even be missing much.

They are starting november 13th which he would miss
it's an in conference schedule

Camp runs November 16th to December 13th
that is theoretically 10 games he would miss, could be less, but assuming weekend series.

10 games NCAA >>>>> Team Canada selection camp by far.

this isn’t a cut and dry situation, that’s for sure. Power could miss a lot of games, with no guarantee of playing even if makes the team. Glad I’m not the one making the decision.

Wow I really respect that coach after hearing what he has to say. Power is lucky to have a guy like that in his corner and I think the decision should be a no brainer. Stay at Michigan.

While I respect the coach, it should be the player's choice.

If the coach says no, transfer to another school that will say yes.

My Guess : A LOT of NCAA teams would LOVE to have the bragging rights of a #1 overall - which is what Power could be with a strong WJR's.

A top-end prospect is not going to sit out an NCAA season to transfer schools. If Power were to leave Michigan, it'd be for the OHL.

I don't know how the NCAA works...

Are you saying he can't transfer to Notre Dame (I pulled ND out of a hat) and start playing in January? I've heard of football players transferring.

Funny how you automatically think the coach has bad intentions. I think he has good intentions here. My opinion, Power would be stupid to leave in this covid landscape.

Everyone has ulterior motives, even me - I want to see him play for Canada at the WJRs. Just let the kid make his own choice. If his choice conflicts with the coach, then Power has to decide :

* See if he can find a place to play where he can have his cake (a scholarship) and eat it too (play at the WJR's for his country)

OR

* Do what the coach feels is best and stay where he is.

He almost certainly would not be allowed by the NCAA to transfer to another school without sitting out a year.

I did not know that. Still, if I was Power and I wasn't allowed to play, I resent it.

I'd tell the coach how much the WJR's means to Canadians and say, "Either let me go to the WJR's or I'll walk"... and maybe I'd regret it.

NCAA removed that rule.
Even better. I will write Notre Dame - I have "Catholic" connections.

Dear Father Jenkins :

There is a talented young Canadian who would LOVE to play for Notre Dame starting on January 7, 2021. He has a very good chance of going 1st overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. I will have him contact you once he gives his notice at Michigan.

My guess :

If Power stood his ground, insisting he wants to go, the school would allow it.

Or meet them half way. Don't go to the early camp but agree to be there in time to quarantine for the exhibition games.

Do you think Team Canada is just going to put a 17 year old on the team which is deep with something like 6 first round defenseman at camp without even having a good look at him like they did the rest who attended the camp

That's true. And Power will have to take that into consideration when he makes HIS decision - whatever is best for the kid.

The total days he would be gone from school would be roughly 51 days in the bubble in Alberta if he makes the team.
and if he makes the team the debate is it worth it if he plays as a spare or limited minutes

that’s a long time for schooling to be gone even if his classes are mostly zoom. and to have never played a game for the wolverines.

My motives are selfish - I want to see him on Team Canada.

Whatever happens will happen. What I want will have no affect.

HC has finally shifted gears on bringing in pre-draft eligibles. As recently as last year we saw that with Drysdale. He is well up on their radar and he's clearly better than Guhle and Schneider, one of whom will surely be on the team.

Your hypothetical is reasonable, but them inviting him to camp instead of Clarke speaks volumes about how they feel about his game/potential. They weren't bringing this kid in to cut him and give him the whoopsies invite back once he's on his ELC.
