How is that different from any other day at the office in the hockey world
Well...when was the last time a team blocked a player from attending a World Junior camp? Yes I get it is a long camp. I don't really care. If teams start feeling like they can pick and choose when they allow their players to attend the WJC that is only a bad thing for the tournament. If you are junior aged and not in the NHL you should be at the camp if you are invited.

People should not assume:
  • Hockey Canada's announcement is not just performative PR for leverage. Possible they're trying to force Pearson's hand.
  • Power hasn't been involved in the decision.
Ultimately I think Power should be able to do what he wants and I also understand the position of both programs.

When was the last time hockey world had a global pandemic that shut down every league in North America?

When was the last time a team held a month long camp before the tournament? They’ve been very clear that he’ll at the very least be released for the tournament, possibly more than just the tournament.

And you make claims that it would be different for American players. The American team isn’t having a long WJC preparation camp, but do you think they’d not release Power because he’s Canadian but release Brisson, Bordeleau, and Beniers because they’re American?

What? Michigan and pearson arent even preventing him attending the tournament. They are encouraging it.

They literally are saying he just can't attend the selection camp RIGHT now. Pearson even said he will release Power for some of the camp. He said it Yesterday.
The only selfish ones here is Hockey Canada refusing to budge on logistics, and that has been echoed by Granato and Madigan.
Hockey Canada changed the camp dates, not michigan.

Agree.

Power had leverage before he agreed to play for Michigan. I would have negotiated this prior to signing - of course, I'm older and have lived more life than Power so I'd know better. Unfortunately, Power's just a kid and never thought about CYA'ing himself.

Michigan gave Power a valuable(!) scholarship so I see their side. Michigan's coach signed Power instead of someone else, so you can't fault him for putting the school (and his job) first - Power playing at the World Juniors doesn't put food in Pearson's family's mouth.

However, I don't like the precedence and I think more of a compromise should be made to give Power a chance to make Team Canada. I'm not sure a Dec 10th release date does that.

If Power wants to ensure he plays NEXT year, he better sit down with Michigan in the summer and negotiate his release in the Fall of 2021. If Michigan is not willing to guarantee him the time to make/play for Team Canada, find a school that will.

Isn’t there a 14 day quarantine required to go from the US to Canada unless I’m missing something? So I’m not sure how Power can just show up whenever they release him. If he was going to the camp at all he should have been already doing it so when the coach came out with his quotes yesterday I knew Power wasn’t joining.

What's sad is that this may be Owen Power's only chance to represent Canada at the U20 level and compete in the WJC. As a possible 1st overall pick — perhaps even the leading candidate — he is likely to stick on an NHL roster right away.

So Powers should get special treatment for the camp and when he gets to arrive because Pearson says so?

Maybe Hockey Canada just sets the roster and rewards the guys who have been there the whole camp.

It’s too bad, I think Powers likely makes the team and then will step into an NHL lineup immediately after he’s drafted. Likely his only year he’d have a chance to be in the WJC.

That has absolutely nothing to do with what I said.

Why do you think the camp is so long? So yeah, it has everything to do with what you commented.
Learn to keep up. It's almost as if you haven't realized that this year is a tad bit different with extenuating circumstances from other seasons.

It is ironic that you are telling me to keep up when you have still quite literally missed my entire point. I am just going to leave it at that. Have a good one.

I mean...it is a pretty damn good bet that if he goes 1OA he is not going to be going back to school lol

The one and done is an approach I would advise him not to pursue. especially this year.. Will he even get 20 games in for the season? doesn't look like it. The free ticket to the pros based on draft position is a recipe for failure imo., especially for a d-man. if we are back to almost normal next fall, then send him back to school to play a full season/ WJC with his '02 age group. maybe even a Team Canada World Championship team in spring '22. Then a summer to train and then his first crack at a NHL roster.

I mean I don't disagree that it would probably be better. I just don't think it will happen. Whatever team that drafts him will want him signed and in their organization as fast as possible.

This is not how college commitments work whatsoever. Its not a negotiable contract. Everyones is the same

Why is all the blame being placed on Pearson?
Maybe Power doesn't want to spend so much time away from the team he has been practicing with since the end of August. Or maybe he wants to be able to focus on his studies, something he may feel he wouldn't be able to do in the camp.
