Kid looked like he was gonna cry when Carolina picked him. He won't sign. Prepare to have him walk for nothing in a couple years. Really wanted the Bruins to draft him.

I think before getting drafted, he looked upset because he wanted to go as high as he could in the draft. He was probably more upset on falling to #5 rather than going to Carolina. He was all smiles when he got on that stage though.

I'm so happy guys!

Obviously he doesn't want to be part of Canes.

On being drafted: "I can’t even really describe it right now. It’s an unbelievable feeling. ... I wanted to go to a team that wanted me. Obviously Carolina saw something in me, and I’m going to work as hard as I can for this organization."

On speaking with Carolina prior to the draft: "I got a really good vibe with the staff there and Ron Francis. I wanted to go to a team that wanted me, and they saw something in me. I’m extremely proud to be wearing this sweater right now."

On making the step up to the NHL: "It’s definitely going to be a step up in every aspect. It’s a lot faster and more physical. You’re playing against men. I think the biggest jump going into the NHL isn’t even the hockey aspect; it’s the mental aspect. Making that jump is a very tough thing to do. … It’s a business now, and you have to perform every night. I think that’s probably going to be the toughest thing."

On if he's ever been to North Carolina: "I haven’t, but I hear great things about it. ... I’m really excited to be a part of this organization right now, and I’m looking forward to going to rookie camp."

I was really hoping he'd fall to us, and it worked out perfectly.

Even if his upside is a little less than theirs, this is awfully close to getting a Jones or Ekblad caliber defensive prospect in the 5 spot. That's incredibly lucky for a team that has always struggled to develop defenseman talent.

This thread has already fallen off the map. Must be the Carolina effect.

In this behind the scenes video, Noah says, "Talked to the coach, he said I'm playing next year" at the 3:27 mark. So maybe he's not going to be back at BC.

And then in Friedman's 30 Thoughts there was this:

15. After Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel, the winner of an informal poll picking the draftee with the best chance of sticking in the NHL next season: Noah Hanifin. Boston College coach Jerry York was in attendance. Bet he would have voted for someone else.

It'll be interesting to follow.

So I guess Hanifin will be on the Canes blue line as soon as next season!? Thoughts?

Leafs did the same with Luke Schenn and look where he is now. The Canes will decide if he's ready or not, but a year in the AHL to season would probably be best for him

Crazy good fit for the Canes. Once the Yotes took Strome I knew he was going there.

Is he going to agree to leave BC at this point if the destination is the AHL?

I wouldn't if I were him. Lots of talent coming in to BC as always. He will have an even bigger role. Last season he seemed to have been reigned in a bit to start both by himself (adjusting) and the coaches. His play in the second half was much more enticing. The best place for his development is BC in my opinion and even if it weren't I think it'd be the obvious choice for himself. College experience or riding the bus in the AHL? Easy choice.

He's ready to play somewhat sheltered minutes in the NHL. Just up to him whether he wants to go dominate college for a year

I'm curious to see where he goes next year. Could definitely see him in the NHL next year, though it wouldn't hurt to give him another year in BC to develop some more.

A situation where I could see Carolina just wanting this guy playing sooner and helping them out.

Hanifin said Peters told him he would be playing next year. The Hurricanes' head scout, Tony MacDonald, said that Hanifin has nothing to gain from returning to BC. Before the draft, Francis mentioned wanting someone who would be ready sooner than later.

As of right now, this is the Hurricanes' defense:

Liles-Faulk
Hainsey-Wiznewski
Jordan-Murphy
Biega (shoots right)

(This is correct handidness: Hanifin shoots left)

If he made the 'Canes, Hanifin would be competing with Michal Jordan, a #6-#7 dman at this point and Hadyn Fleury; the 'Canes' 2014 1st round draft pick.

It also depends if the 'Canes resign Tim Gleason, who will either sign with the 'Canes or retire (IMO).

FWIW, the 'Canes under Peters' last year played their 2nd and 3rd pairings in almost equal frequency. If Hanifin sneaks into the lineup, he won't get merely 6 minutes a night.

I think he makes the team, and the 'Canes run with this:

Liles-Faulk
Hanifin-Wisniewski
Hainsey-Murphy
Jordan-Biega
Fleury

So pumped about a Hanifin - Faulk pairing for 10 years.

I'm crazy, but I would do this:

Hainsey - Wiz
Hanifin - Faulk
???? - JML
Jordan

Shelter Hanifin with Faulk in the 2nd pairing for under 20 a night for the first few games to see how he does. It will also give time for him and Faulk to read each other.

I think Fluery should be given a look also, maybe pair him with Liles to give him vet pairing advice.

We have a serious D pool for the first time ever. GMRF is the anti-JR GM. I think RF watched everything JR did and reversed it.

Fleury's not ready, probably not even for the 9 game showcase. Let him play in Red Deer for another year and go from there. If we're already likely to fast track Hanifin, there's no need to rush Fleury as well.
