This is pretty much the reason I am not as much a fan of his game. The rush offense and his on-puck skills are great but there is a lot missing from his defensive game that will take a lot of time to develop if it ever really does. Because of that I'm not sure if he's capable of being a true #1 defenseman.
It’s gonna take a lot of time to develop? That’s the feeling you got when working with him? He’s not very coachable or something? Lol.. Luke’s a teenager.. he’ll be fine..

Probably will get a different assignment next season. I don't think Michigan needed him to focus on his defense that much with Power there. Next year I'm sure he'll be the Big D on campus without Power around and will have more responsibility.

And while I realize no one cares about others' fantasy team, I just traded for Luke this week to go along with Quinn and Jack who I was fortunate enough to draft. Gave up the #7 pick in this year's draft and Broberg. I don't even care if it was a slight overpay, I wanted to have all the Hughes. I need to come up with some clever name.
Hughes G. Rection?

What makes you think he will take a lot of time to develop his defensive game? Or question if he will ever be able to? I am not being a jerk, just honestly asking what leads you to believe this ? He was the youngest kid in his draft , a freshman that destroyed several NCAA records as a Dman (freshman to boot) , has elite skating ability and is very competitive . What points to him not being able to or not wanting to improve his defensive game?

Is Luke the type of player who will need (and take) all four years of college to physically mature and develop his game enough to step into an NHL roster? I’m wondering if he might play out all four years?

Zero chance he stays all four, devils have been on record saying he will most likely follow Quinn’s route of 2 years college (7 game sample at the end of next year) and then be with the big club the following year

Even if he’s not ready though? Luke is tall and skinny. He’s got a lot more physical maturing to fill out his frame than his older brothers did. I guess he could sign, come out early, and then the club sends him to the minors to develop.

No one voluntarily leaves their 1st round picks in college for four years for obvious reasons.

Might not be Jersey’s choice. Maybe Luke would rather stay his four years and mature in college (so he can go directly from college into the NHL) than play in the AHL for a couple years?

Hughes will not be at Michigan for his D+3 year. We were pretty lucky to keep him for his D+2 honestly.

Luke is taller and heavier than his brother by a considerable amount, had a better freshman year than this brother, and yet he he needs to physically develop more and spend time in the AHL whereas his brother did not?

Quinn spent two years in college.

If Luke spends another year in Michigan he'll probably jump right to the NHL and skip the AHL.

Don't mind Ogee, he said Hughes was overrated all last year so he is just doubling down now.

He might end up the best of the 3 and I adore Jack Hughes. Once Luke gets use to the heavy nature of the NHL an learns how to create that space for himself ( like it took jack 2 yrs to do ) good god the kid can be amazing.

He's not going to be better than Jack. This is what Jack already did at 20

Luke's likely going to be great but Jack has a strong chance to be a consistent Hart contender.

He will be better than Jack, as I said last season. This maybe one of the easier victory laps I have ever done. He has Makar potential in a 6'2 body, make what you want of that

I want to see him use that 6’2” a bit more. The way he skates and his reach I get why he relies a lot on stick work, but he needs to round out his game with some physicality.

I honestly just think he doesn't have to at the stages in his development right now. Playin U20 players internationally and college aged players his smarts and skating get him out of any jam. Once he turns pro it'll be imperative he use the body a bit more against older/stronger players.
