Suprised he went so high he really should of dropped another 15 spots or so. Def not 1st round material

Some odd late 1st round defensive picks this year. Don't like Stanley at all. Like Cholowski, but expected him to go 15-25 picks later.

It's going to take a lot of convincing for me to understand why Stanley was considered a first round, let alone top-20, talent.
Size. Teams adore big defenders with a huge reach.

2015 was a much deeper draft. I'm not a fan of Stanley, but he probably has a better tool kit than either of those guys. So if you wanted him, you needed to take him in the top 25 somewhere.Yeah but you can find them in Later rounds
Boston with Brandon Carlo in the mid 2nd round
Vancouver with tryamkin in the 3rd round
You can find these guys and not waste a top 20 pick.
Statistically speaking, every draft will have about the same level of talent after the top picks. The only exceptions are years when eligibility rules changed, like 2003.2015 was a much deeper draft. More like the top 5-10. If you look at draft-eligible players like a data set, the draft essentially removes the high range outliers one-by-one until you regress to the mean, and it doesn't take long to get there. The problem is, statistically speaking, the top picks of the age cohort are the 210 that get drafted.
Kid is going to prove his detractors wrong - at worst he is Zach Bogosian and mid first round that's a solid pick, at best he's a top pairing beast of a dman.
I think the Coyotes will rightfully be cautious. Very few D-men are ready for the NHL with only 2 years of CHL experience. The only guys who really impressed out the gate from their draft are Ekblad (Exceptional, had 3 years CHL, but was in his 18 year old season) and Doughty (late birthday, in his 19 year old year). In my belief it takes a truly special defender to be ready for the NHL immediately following there draft. Guys like Hedman, Doughty and Ekblad were guys who were either possessed elite physical traits with very high hockey IQ, or in Doughty's case was arguably the smartest under-20 defender I have ever seen. Hanifin, looked good too, but I do think his NCAA experience really helped, and Seth Jones looks good but he was another late birthday.I agree. I think he'd easily make the Coyotes out of camp if it weren't for the logjam on defense there. A lot of people seem to be following the pack mentality on rating him, without actually looking at the reasons behind his stock falling.
His shoulder injury, and shift in the style of play the coach wanted for his team, has definitely played into his bad year. Don't get me wrong, he deserves blame for his bad play and he's said as much, but I think people are being a bit unfair towards him here.
Agreed, it would only handicap his development. I feel like he's due for a huge year with the Sting, last year was an up and down grind for him. Watch his numbers take a big leap. This young man should not be rushed. I feel he still needs to mature mentally and another season in junior will only benefit him in the long run. It is now the norm to rush kids into a men's league where they may be harmed both physically and mentally and this could hurt them long term. Look at what Ron Hextall is doing in Philly and for the most part look at the Red Wings.
I think it's a mistake to expect 16-year-old kids to develop this way or that. Projecting their future at 18 is hard enough. He is what he is, and calling him "disappointing" for failing to keep pace with other elite youngsters is a bit rough.I was really disappointed with him but still had him at around 10. This time last year he was neck-and-neck with Matthews based on his 16 year old season. He just didn't really develop this past year and was basically the same player trying to do more. Despite that he was still a top 10 pick in my mind...that's just how good he was.
