This guy will be the best dman of this year's draft class. Arizona is making some nice moves.

Oh man, yeah. We’ve been working so hard with maintaining our bodies and then just putting weight on, like you said. In the OHL, I was consistently 195. Maybe a little under 195. Then I realized, “Alright, this is my NHL draft year. I kind of want to get heavier and kind of prepare for the next level.” So I got up to 215. That was a really big jump for me. It was like over 20 pounds. And I realized that was a lot of weight for me to be carrying around as a 17-year-old kid, so I went down a bit. Ideally, I want to be around 208, I think.

He may have had too much weight on him last season. Full article link: www.theplayerstribune.com/2016-6-24-logan-brown-jakob-chychrun-nhl-draft/

The article makes me wish even more we had taken brown instead of Keller.

I still cant believe he fell that far. Its Cam Fowler all over again.

Chychrun had slid in some rankings prior to the draft, so it was less surprising.

I want to say Fowler was still pretty consistently ranked around the top 5 on most lists even heading into the draft.

great pick up by Pheonix, there are going to be teams kicking themselves in a few years.

This. I do get the hype for forwards. But let him drop out of the top 10 will make several teams look foolish. Particularly as almost everyone seems to need elite D-man.:dunce:
Its Cam Foler all over again.
I got the same vibe here. A prospect being overanalyzed - while probably not being a franchise player still way better than his actual draft position.

He could. Didn't tender offers to Kcon or dahlbeck. I think if the team isn't sold on his future development in Sarnia they might keep him up.

I think he makes the team. Who else agrees?
For his sake, don't. I'd say at a minimum he needs another year in Sarnia, don't think it'd be a great idea for him to go straight to the pros after this year. He needs to work out some kinks in his game, if you are hoping to develop at #1 D-men, you will send him back. Very few 18 year olds are truly ready for the NHL grind.

The best example I can give is, look at the 2008 draft, it had 4 defenders chosen in a row. 3 of the 4 were brought up right away and one was sent down for almost fully years. Here are the cases and how they compare to Chychrun

Drew Doughty-He was truly elite, had played for a gold medal WJC team and being a late birthday had given him an extra year. In comparison to Chychrun, Doughty was a way more savy player with elite awareness and already had a very smooth game. I'd say Ekblad, Seth Jones and Hedman fall into a similar category but with a bit less awareness but greater physical tools.

Zach Bogosian-He's still been a respectable NHLer, but I believe he was called up too early, that and injuries really capped his potential. I feel Bogosian is a great comparable, amazing physical tools, may not think the game at an uber-elite level but isn't flawed.

Luke Schenn- Late birthday and brought up, limited offensive skills. Should of been sent down and develop his all around game. Not that comparable, Chych has displayed way more offensive potential than Schenn ever did.

Pietrangelo-Great skating and awareness, wasn't as physicall developed as Bogosian (still had great tools) or had the elite hockey sense Doughty did. His game was immature and needed to be refined, and I believe this approach by the Blue's was key.

Looking at this, I'd say you have to send back an 18 year old D-men, unless he has truly elite hockey sense and is close to physically ready. In Chychrun's case, I'd say another year where he can work out kinks to his game and be a key guy on the WJC team will be huge. He may need two full years, but the payoff should be worth it. The NHL seems to be more aware of this now, and are sending guys back unless they are clearly ready. Looking back, outside of Ekblad, I can't think of an early birthday CHL defender who was NHL ready at 18 and appear to live up to the potential. Guys like Doughty, Seth Jones and Fowler have done well straight after the draft but they were late birthdays.

I want him to go back to Sarnia and dominate the league but it's very unlikely to happen when that Sarnia team is so bad that its practically a 1-man show with him logging 30 minutes a night. He neelps help down there for him to develop because he can't do it alone.

Sarnia has some talent, they have Konecny coming back, and possibly Zacha. Chychrun is not NHL ready, if he's making mistakes under pressure in the OHL, the NHL forecheck pressure will not help him, and may hurt his confidence. It takes a very special defender to be ready as an 18 year old, as stated, the only defenseman to come up recently that age and appears on his path to stardom is Ekblad. Doughty, Fowler and Jones were late birthdays. Maybe he shocks people at NHL camp, but if you took the slow approach with Domi and Strome, I don't see why you wouldn't with Chychrun.

I'm led to believe the mistakes weren't merely because of the pressure, it also had to do with him logging 30 minutes a game and trying to do it all. He won't have to do it all in Arizona, he would be sheltered on the 3rd defensive pairing with a strong defensive core in OEL, Gologoski and Murphy.

Strome and Domi still weren't physically ready, Chychrun is. Like I said, I'd prefer him in the OHL with Sarnia but not if he doesn't have much of a team to work with it'll only worsen his development. You'd have seen a lot more mistakes from Juolevi and Sergachev than you did this year had they been with the empty talented Sarnia Stings.

Either way, I'm 100% sure it only takes 1 year in the OHL and that's likely to happen but it won't surprise me if he makes the roster.

Doughty played minutes like that with Guelph, who were much worse than Sarnia were. Sarnia was just as talented as Windsor and actually won that division. London is a different story as both them and Erie were stacked. But you are talking about Sarnia like they were Sudbury or Flint, when they actually won there division over Windsor.

Chayka’s take: “He came in and staked his claim as our best defensive prospect with his balance of size and skill and skating ability. With a little work, he should be in an Arizona Coyotes jersey for a long, long time. He’s a guy we envision playing 20 to 25 minutes a game and in all situations.â€

Showed well enough that they want him at the NHL camp for a long look.

Fallers always get viewed as 'steals', despite the fact they slide for a reason. Rarely do picks that slide down somehow 'punish' teams who passed on them. In fact, more often than not, they fail to even live up to the spot they are picked at.

Chychrun is going to make a lot of teams look stupid. He didn't just develop awful hockey sense last season all of a sudden.
