Up to 20 minutes per night now, but that may go down slightly with Gudas back tonight and MDZ back in about 10 days.

:amazed:

Wow, usually these plays are over hyped but this was an awesome pass.

So far a young D has been inconsistent with flashes. Seems pretty normal to me for every rookie D in the NHL.

The thing is, he has not even been inconsistent. He has had 1 bad game, the rest have been good to great.

Provorov has looked great recently and has been the team's best dman for the past 4 or so games imo. 4 pts in last 4 games. Growing pains were inevitable and will have some more but he is already starting to come into his own.

Leafs fan coming in peace - just wondering how he's looked so far?

The point production looks good, -8 in 10 games sort of jumps off the page so just wondering what the impressions are of his contribution to that

Think he needs a better D-partner then Streit. I don't think it is fair for a rookie who is still a junior to carry his D-partner. Look at Trouba, he wanna leave Jets after carrying Stuart for 3 years :sarcasm:

I never understand why teams bring top prospect defensemen into the league as teenagers and make them carry their partner. Won't be a problem for you guys for long though with Sanheim and Morin inching closer

Our goaltending has been godawful this year. Every defensemen in the league makes mistakes, but literally every mistake any of our defensemen make this year are ending up in the back of the net.

Provorov's had one legitimately bad game, a few with ups and downs, and the rest he's been very solid (while also showing flashes of his potential).

Really the only time he looks bad is with Streit because Streits been horrible and looking like the rookie of the pair.

He had a really rough game vs Chicago where he went -5 where every little mistake backfired and his 38 year old Streit partner could do nothing to bail him out. It was his 3rd game and he played over 20 min vs Kane and Panarin's line ... not exactly a recipe for success. Since then he has been very solid and looked real good. He had another bad play last game leading to a goal but has been overall very good the last 5 games barring that mistake.

He's playing a top pairing role already w/ the hardest competition of any Flyers dman. Growing pains were going to be inevitable but I like what I have seen. Kid has all the tools to be a #1 dman.

Out of the 122 d men in the league who have played 100 minutes, Provorov has the 19th lowest PDO. He has had his share of mistakes, as is to be expected for a teenage d man in his first month of pro hockey, with the positives outweighing them by far, but he's been a victim of awful luck. If he makes a mistake, any mistake, it's going in the back of the net so far. It's been a little ridiculous honestly. He has no leeway because he just isn't being bailed out. It's been that way for many Flyers so far with unsustainably bad goaltending, but just a bit worse for him.

Thank you. I've seen some highlights and you can definitely see the talent. Makes a lot more sense with the bad luck and seeing that your goaltending has been almost as bad as ours

He's one of the players where the rules screw him. He probably would have been better off going to the AHL but he either had to play in the NHL or go back to Juniors. Juniors would have been a wasted year for him. At least in the NHL he gets to go against the best day in and day out.

As long as he doesn't lose his confidence and focus it isn't a bad thing to play against the leagues best. It will serve him well playing the leagues top players. I would have preferred they slowly weaned him into the league, but it is what it is. Hopefully when MDZ gets back they can shelter him a bit, or get him a competent partner. Despite the mistakes he had been one of, if not philly's best defender behind Gudas IMO.

Ya I hate that rule, Marner couldn't play in the AHL either and most leaf fans would have started him there to get used to a pro game. It sucks with top prospects who have nothing left to gain from playing junior

The concern regarding Provorov isn't one of ability but rather coaching.

The coaches need to make sure that he's getting manageable minutes with a decent defensive partner and that his confidence and preparation are where they need to be at.

As long as the coaches can properly do their job, things should work out.

Injuries/suspensions early in the year made this not easy to do. Gudas was suspended and MDZ has been out.

I've only seen him in the two games they played against Carolina. First game he got some points, wasn't very noticeable. Second game he was god awful.

I've seen some highlights (like the flip pass above) that make him look good, but I guess that's typical of a very young dman in the NHL. He should probably be in the AHL getting a chance to experience the pro game in a slower pace. His output seems fine in the NHL, but I'd bet that most Philly fans would have preferred him in the AHL if he was allowed to go there

I dunno... he has made mistakes... but play by play he might have been our best Dman if that makes sense. Very rare he gives the puck away and he is awesome at breaking it out of our zone. He thinks the game stupidly well already.

I.E. If you went play by play all year so far and ranked each play of each Dman... then took the median, he would probably be the best... but in mean he would not be!

It is not like he is making the same mistakes again, or struggling in one aspect of the game... it seems more like 'boundary testing' a lot... plus he has been objectively extremely 'unlucky' defensively. (.857 sv% at 5v5!)

He is definitely already an NHL calibre defenseman... heck, he is better than half the guys on our back end already!

I mean, so far this season:

52.73% Corsi
+0.88 Corsi rel

While facing top lines mostly!

And he has 0.5 PPG with 4/5 points at 5v5.

Once he realises what he can and cannot do in the NHL he is going to be very good... he already has 99% of the findamentals down to a tee.
