Yikes, haven't seen him at St Cloud, but I always assumed with his physique that it was going to take a few years to fill out.

Between Jost and Cholowski hopefully we'll find out soon if the Khaira AHL eligibity report is correct.

No kidding. Maybe someone in the media will have to report on this since it involves the Red Wings now.

Wonder if he was flunking out

He's actually a bookworm. A rinkrat and a bookworm. Loves school. The captain of SCSU actually had to tell him to give the studying a break for a bit and just chill with the guys. There's a whole article out there that talks about it.

I personally think the ELC is the bargaining chip used to convince him to go to to Prince George where he'd get more minutes and a bigger role.

He was a top 4 guy all season for us. He was getting PP time and PK time. He may get a bigger role there in terms that he may be the #1 D-man there which he wasn't here...but he got what he earned with us and he wasn't even our best freshman defenseman this season. He was young and at times it showed. This move...makes ZERO sense to me.

PG will most likely not have a very good team next year. They went all in this year to win it but lost out in the 1st round and will be losing a lot of guys next year now. I wouldn't doubt if he is traded to a contender and then PG can get some real good assets back.

Any chance you have a link? Very curious to read about it.

Pretty much yeah. He was with Schuldt..our best dman...all but 6 games this season. Not bad for the youngest dman on the team.
It is not St. Cloud's job to cater to any player and it certainly is not Motzko's way.
Cholowski got the playing time he earned...which is how it should be.

I understand. Not saying they were being unfair. But by the same token, it IS detroit's job to make sure he is in the best situation for him to develop.

Not saying it isn't. But...then don't blow smoke up our ass saying he's going to need time and you like the situation he is in at SCSU. The Wings know how SCSU and Motzko works considering Jensen is on the squad now. They know the program we run but they also know we are not going to cater to a player...1st round pick or not. By all accounts he was progressing just fine with us and looked to be a big contributor in the coming seasons so for me...something just seems off here.

I never said I liked that situation for him, because I didn't.

The NCAA is so goddamn stupid. I hope they continue to bleed players to the AHL like this. Beyond stupid to me that they wouldnt allow NHL drafted prospects to sign ELCs but stay in college. Teams get satisfaction of knowing they have player under contract, player gets benefit of staying in NCAA, NCAA keeps top talent for 3/4 years. They way its going now, the NCAA is turning into a 1 and done or 2 and done league

Overall the NCAA is a gongshow with this whole amatuer thing, but up it up a stupidity notch in regards to hockey

I would say this has to do with keeping amateur athlete status but even that definition is hazy, as former pro athletes that end up in school could be an "amateur".

Could also cause issues with scholarships, covered costs, etc.

If you're a top pick it's safe to assume you're not staying in the NCAA for long.

I can't help but wonder if this is a slight shift in philosophy related to the James de Haas situation. I'm pretty certain the team wants to sign de Haas but the fact it hasn't happened yet doesn't look good. Maybe they don't want to risk being burned by a top prospect in the future.

Maybe, but the NCAA position on hockey is already very different from other sports. Football and basketball players lose eligibility once they enter the draft. Baseball players either sign before the season or the drafting team loses their rights. Only hockey allows kids to be drafted and have teams retain their rights which still being NCAA eligible. It's a really weird system.

If I had to guess the NCAA doesn't want to make it even more obvious that they are a de facto 'mi or leagues' for most sports and allowing players under contract to still compete, even if these players get zero compensation, would just be taking amateur to a ridiculous extreme. Not to mention it would probably hurt their court cases about paying athletes.

I think this is probably the biggest thing, said by the SCSU Coach:
"You see it come in flashes and a little bit of wave. Not a lot of time passes when you don't see (his talent). In between, you see where he needs to take the big growth steps in his game. All kids physically mature at a different age. He's a 19-year-old in a 16-year-old body ... but that's a good thing. His upside is huge ... . He's got an opportunity to develop into an elite player."

For physically underdeveloped guys, I would imagine the CHL is a better fit for his development at this point in time.

The speculation right now is that the Wings want him in the CHL instead of the NCAA. Not that the Wings were in a rush to get him inked as soon as possible.

Hes just one of the long list of 2015/2016 NCCA drafted prospects leaving the NCAA

From the 2015 draft not 1 of the NCAA players drafted in first 2 rounds will be in the NCAA next year. Hanifin, Werenski, Connor, White, Boeser, Greer, JFK have all signed pro deals

From the 2016 draft, 1 year removed, Jost, McAvoy, Cholowski, Keller have all signed pro deals

Its a race to get out of the NCAA the fastest and I wouldnt be suprised to see some NCAA/USHL drafted prospects in 2017 skip NCAA post draft all together to go to CHL or AHL

The issue is the NCAA is not a one sport organization. They aren't going to alllow signed kids to stay in hockey because then they'd have to do it in ALL sports which is never going to be allowed.

Which is pretty stupid IMO and a reason theyll continue to loose all top end players to the AHL. It will only be soon enough before USHL players jump straight to CHL instead of NCAA

Although I guess losing NCAA hockey players to other leagues is not a concern for NCAA and they way bigger issues continue to be football and basketball which are way bigger draws and have way larger pervasive issues of not paying the players

Good point, but isn't it only NHL and MLB that allows 18 year olds to be drafted? I could understand that from football and basketball perspective.

Top 4 all season?

College/USHL player deployment doesn't work like NHL deployment. Much more fluid. You'll notice that they have their 3rd leading scoring forward on the 4th line, yet I guarantee he got better minutes than half of the players above him. The lineup card means very little.

The way I see it, and I think you pointed this out, NCAA is losing top players to the AHL more so than the CHL. I'm not sure what you can do for top prospects who weren't going to stay the full 4 years anyway.

Cholowski is an uncommon one, his fellow 2016 college draftees look like they'll be going full-time NHL or developing in the AHL.
