Now that he's officially under 1st round consideration, I figured it's time to bump the thread. Very excited to have this kid at St. Cloud State University next year. He was originally intended to play another year in the BCHL, but it looks like SCSU is going to move an existing defenseman up to forward to make room for him on the blueline next season.

As skilled as he is, I do NOT expect Cholowski to be the best freshman defenseman on the team. Jack Ahcan has been playing lights out in the USHL. Ahcan doesn't project well as an NHL'er, but he could very well be a better collegiate defenseman. The same happened with Jimmy Schuldt and Will Borgen this past season. That defensive corps will be one of the best in the country even with the graduation of Ethan Prow.

Random Trivia: Matt Cullen is SCSU's highest ever drafted player at 35th overall. Dennis is in a good position to beat that record.

Any BCHL fans want to add some insight?

How come more people arent talking about this kid? Both Mckeens and central scouting have him in their first round.

I know some people hate hearing comparisons to current NHL players and especially really good ones (often it gets confused between comparing gamestyle/skillset and thinking the person is saying the prospect will become as good). When I watch those 2 videos the first thing comes to mind is how similar his size, hands and passing look to OEL's. He definitely needs to get stronger/bigger and improve his first step (which should come with added leg strength). He looks like someone who could gain ALOT of room physically in one season of serious weight training/diet.

His weakness's look like easily correctable things with time and development. If he can improve on those things he looks like a guy who'll be a extremely solid NHL player. I would definitely be fine with the Leafs taking him with either Pitts late first or the TOR 2nd.

I'm warming up to him in that are too.

Nobody is talking about him cause he went from an unknown to a first rounder so quickly and majority of people haven't seen him play live or on tv so I guess not many people can comment on him

With 29 team interviews, it's pretty clear he's on that late first, early second bubble. Hate to say it, but the commitment to SCSU is probably why he doesn't get as much coverage as if he were committed to UND, BC, or UMN. I'm fine with that. Scouts know better than the media. :)

and that commitment to SCSU just shows how pivotal of a season he had that obviously even surprised himself. IMO he definitely would have held out and let the offers fly in from all huge schools that if HE even knew he would have turned this good this season

love seeing unknowns turn out to be so good... and this guy is unreal and IMO will be considered a huge steal in a few years

Let's not act like SCSU isn't a good hockey program. They were fourth in the nation and they're getting great recruiting classes in.

Maybe so, but to the casual hockey prospect follower who doesn't follow the NCAA that closely, SCSU doesn't have anything close to the name recognition that the likes of Boston College, Boston U, Michigan, NDak, etc., have.

and to be honest, if a kid had full ride scholarship offers from UND, BU, BC, UM and SCSU, I guarantee SCSU would have their work cut out for them to get the kid to commit to them

As a proud alum, I won't deny it. Happy to see late bloomers stick with their commitments though, whether it's SCSU or some other "small" school. Tufte is another good example of this, though he has other connections to UMD.

oh its awesome.. I love seeing it

This kid has impressed a lot at the prospect camp, he has incredible hockey sense, very smooth, calm, makes beautiful passes and is a great skater. Im actually happy we picked him over Chychurn.

chychrun was already taken

They traded back knowing ARZ were taking Chychrun, they chose not to take him.

That doesn't mean they passed on chychrun for him. They got out of Datsyuk contract and added a second round pick. That was the reason they didn't want chychrun.

It's like if you traded down from 3th overall to 10th overall for Jack eichel. And then say you passed on puljujarvi for jost lol.

Yeah, they didn't think that Cholowski was better than Chychrun. They thought that the combination of Cholowski, 53rd OA, Joe Vitale and getting rid of Datsyuk's contract was better than Chychrun.
