Chance he’s used at times as an energy winger on the second line like Hyman was, and manning the third line C roles other times. Can Pk.
And dirt cheap for next year.
That’s a lot to like.

He’s played more wing than centre this season, projecting him as the third line saviour up the middle is a little optimistic don’t you think?

Hagel got 2 1sts 2 4ths and 2 C tier prospects, Reinhart got 1st + top goalie prospect, Tkachuk got somewhere in the realm of 3-4 1sts if you liquidated Weegar and Huberdeau into picks right away. There’s good upcoming RFAs on bottomed out teams all the time, some combination of 1sts + prospects is usually how you get them, and you usually at least get a bridge at a cap hit that’s 2/3s of what a comparable UFA will cost.
So none of them returned multiple firsts and all of a teams top prospects. I'd rather keep Marner and give up nothing than lose several 1st round picks along with Cowan, Minten and Danford. Not a single player you mentioned is worth Marner, multiple 1st rounders and all our top prospects, not even close.

Curious to see how we deploy the bottom 6. Assuming we'll start with

Laughton - Domi - Jarn
Holm - Kamp - Lorentz

Robertson, Patches swap in as needed?

I guess they could force Laughton up and roll a scoring third line with McMann - Domi - Robertson and a defensive 4th line

Would have shot a little higher, but I get it and he's retained which makes it more valuable for sure. Don't know if he solves the 3C spot, but it sounds like they're putting him there.

They did not acquire Laughton to put him on the wing.

Unfortunate that this appeared to be the going rate when trading for an inexpensive third liner. While it's tough to see a pair of 1sts and a pair of prospects go out the door, it also can't be denied that the two trades today make the team noticeably stronger for at least the next two playoff pushes.

Lol. Firstly, he's a Center.

Secondly. You watched Leafs Playoffs games this decade, saw how many times they couldnt score and lost they lost 2-1 or 1-0 in Game 7 and thought, hmm, they need more defence????

They need more offence. The defence has always been more than good in the playoffs minus that one Jake Gardener year.
Why yes, yes of course we need more offence because that $50 million we already spend on "high end elite" offence ain't enough...

Well Tre put it on the core players. People said Rielly needs a partner. They did it. JT is 2c and they need a 3c and did that.

It's all on the core now. Panthers are going to be a hellish nightmare.

Less a fan of this one. Carlo was sort of a rare breed as a player and fit what we were looking for on the right side. I think Laughton is a bit more of an awkward fit as third line center.

The bigger issue I have with both acquisitions is that scoring has been our achilles heel in the postseason, scoring is actually down for the club this year, and neither acquisition brings much by way of offense.

It'll fall to our top players to prove they can elevate, once again... but maybe that's how it should be.

Maybe Brad could've gotten Philly to add Kuzmenko to the deal and take one less pick or add another pick. Could've added some cheap depth scoring for a relatively low price.

I mean, Brad had to make a move for a third liner who can play centre. If he hadn't, he was going to be crucified for going into the playoffs with Domi/Holmberg/Kampf as his bottom six Cs.

I don't know... it's a pretty predictable sort of trade to me. A team that's fighting for first in its division and is supposed to be trying to win now trades a first rounder two years from now and a decent prospect for a player who will improve the third line and has a year left. Not the end of the world. Laughton is a likeable player.

I do like the bottom six better with Laughton and Jankrok than with Dewar and Reaves.

How is Laughton an awkward fit? 3rd line C has been a hole on this team for 6 years. Laughton is physical, can play the PK, and provides decent secondary scoring. Can really help anchor our 3rd line and improve our special teams.

He’s played more wing than centre with Philly this year, also not a ace at winning face offs…….

Think the Flyers have played him mostly at wing lately, although he has plenty of games under his belt at center. Just doesn't have much of a finishing touch. Was hoping for a guy you could maybe groom to take over second line duties at some point, but that may have been a bit of a rosy expectation.

Yeah, kind of wish we hadn't done this. Not a fan of the price paid for a player of his caliber. You can't trade for personality and hope it rubs off on your team when it's a somewhat marginal player.

I think Laughton has a lot still to give and helps us in key areas we need help. He’s also only costing us 1.5m on the cap for 2 years. The price is a little rich but I think ~15 goals, ~40 points, heavy and solid defensively is a very good fit. Might even click with some of our guys and maybe we can get a bit more out of him.

Also I don’t think they need Laughton to come in a shift their culture. I don’t think that’s why this deal was done.

He's the middling player like Domi and Jarnkrok except plays a harder physical game .. He's slight upgrade at the #3C spot over Domi and Jarnkrok but I wouldn't be shocked to see him spot some shifts on the wing alongside Tavares or even Matthews.

This year, but like I mentioned, he has played center his whole life. He was injured to start the year. They had Ryan Poehling this year and they tried him on the wing and that third line has been productive.

All other years in Philly including last year with Torts he was a center. The only other year in Philly he didn’t play center was 2015. I’m not sure where this narrative that he can’t play center is coming from.

He’s a natural centerman and has been since junior with the Generals.
