Confirmed with Link: Laughton (50% retention), a 4th and a 6th to the Leafs for a conditional 2027 1st round pick and Nikita Grebenkin

Grebenkin isn’t an NHL player. He just doesn’t have the talent. I get that some fans loved his try-hard spirit and how cute it was to hear him mumbling “forecheck, back check, paycheque” with all of his teeth missing, but he’s a part time 4th line call up at best.

Getting salary retention for pending UFA rentals ALWAYS costs a premium in deadline trades. Getting salary retention for NEXT YEAR as well costs even more of a premium.

A future 1st round pick a year down the road ALWAYS has less value than a 1st round pick in the current year.

On top of everything, the Leafs get a 4th and a 6th along with Laughton. Tremendous deal for the Leafs.

Sorry about your luck, Treliving haters.

Besides dallas colorado winnepeg florida and tampa all got better or are already better
Leafs aint winning no cup
Shanahan tied tye leafs hands by not moving marner before his nmc kicked in wiyhout him being ectended
This is on shanny

I disagree about Tampa and Florida but see your points about the west. I think Florida without Tkachuk isn’t doing anything, plus their d core isn’t the same as when they went to back to finals.

Don’t really believe in Tampa atm. I really like Dallas.

I more so like the deal for the fact that if we reset by letting Marner walk. We have Laughton who is one piece at 1.5 and don’t have to over spend in UFA.

whether you like the value or not(i think its not very good but acceptable i suppose given what prices this year are) the problem is the FO continues to spend draft capital to fix around the edges of a team that has proven its core its whats lacking.
its like buying a new bumper for a car that has a broken transmission.
at one point its gonna have to be up to matthews/marner/JT/willy and morgan(the latter 2 at least have a a few bright spots) to take us there, i dont see it and havent for a while. i hope im wrong but im fairly certain im not.
I agree with what you’re saying. This core, they are the ones who have to lead the team in order for them to go on a deep playoff run. Yet they have consistently been unable to do that. I really hope this year is different, but if they don’t, I’m willing to bet that both Marner and Tavares will be resigned. If that happens, wouldn’t it be nice to see the fans show their disgust by not buying tickets to the games, which will never happen.

ye it never will since the lower bowl is all corporate anyways.
at the end of the day the majority of our aquisitions have done what they were brought in to do, yet we still have only been out of the 1st round once and got smoked in 2nd rnd rnd that year. i think we are actually a worse team this year then in the past EXCEPT the fact our goalie tandem has been probably the best in the league(outside of a few woll hiccups) JT has looked horrible 5v5 again after his hot start, matthews has been mediocre, willy has been..willy, and marner has been good yet i still dont trust him as far as i can throw him. our special teams arent very good and our depth/blueline scoring has been pretty none existent. maybe its just me but i dont see a long playoff run :(

Not that I particularly like the deal, but Tre did ok value wise considering the market.

Laughton doesn't move the needle, but getting him at 1.5 for next year as well allows the Leafs to address other areas of need.

People fall in love with their homegrown prospects. I don't see Greb as having a significant NHL career. Every org has a prospect like him. Glad we hung on to Cowan, Minten and Danford.

Having a 1st doesn’t mean you’re drafting with it, we’re at a point where it’s better to bundle a couple 1sts + prospects to get a longterm impact player than to keep bleeding 1st+ every deadline to get short/medium term filler pieces.
I don't disagree, but if you're spending all that capital where is the cap space coming from to pay this "long term impact player'?

Probably the 22 million we have going to UFA + the 10+ million of fat we can and need to trim in the bottom-6.
Except we don't have the 22 million right now and we're gonna give up multiple picks and prospects to sign someone but let ours walk for free.? That's idiotic. We're already spending half our cap on 4 players and you want to add another one?

A 1st is a top prospect with how bare our farm is. Any player drafted with it likely becomes one of our top prospects.

In essence, we traded two of our top prospects for Laughton.
Any player drafted with the 1st we sent wouldn't have been joining the ranks of our prospects for two more full seasons, in time to go to one training camp while Matthews is still under contract.

This isn't necessarily true no matter how many times people say it. Lots of late prospects make it in their D+1 or D+2 years.

Knies was the 57th pick in 2021 and he joined the team for the playoffs in 22-23. RoR was picked in the second round, was playing in the NHL the following season.

You can always hit on a prospect... well unless you don't have the draft pick. Also, picks at the draft or offseason have more value than picks at the TDL

Like Greb, but he was a little rough around the edges, his d-zone game needed some serious work. Glad Toronto gave up a draft pick (2027 first to boot) and didn't trade away top prospect

No you use the picks in the off-season after Marner tries to hold you hostage for 13+. The alternative is you either pay him whatever Ferris demands or you replace him with other overpaid UFAs pushing 30.

We needed an upgrade at 3C on Domi or Holmgren, and we got it. The price, a low first rounder probably, and Grebenkin is palatable. Is it a needle mover? No, that would have come at a much steeper price. Right now the needle has to be moved by the core 4. I hope there's a defenceman coming so we can get rid of Timmins for the playoffs. He's going to be eaten alive in a series against either Florida teams. Decent trade by Tre.

I made some gifs that I won't need anymore, thank f***, so if you guys ever need them:

You're missing the point. The prospect literally won't be drafted until after the conclusion of the 2026-2027 season, 2.5 years from now. The kid is currently playing midget. It's the furthest thing from trading one of our current, about ready to contribute prospects.

Lol. Firstly, he's a Center.

Secondly. You watched Leafs Playoffs games this decade, saw how many times they couldnt score and lost they lost 2-1 or 1-0 in Game 7 and thought, hmm, they need more defence????

They need more offence. The defence has always been more than good in the playoffs minus that one Jake Gardener year.

Scott Laughton probably isn’t the guy to help you out when down 2-1 in Game 7. He’s a Kerfoot, Jarnkrok third liner with more aggressive outlook.
