I'm sure Laughton will help us and play hard

However, again, we've traded a premium asset and a prospect who may be close to NHL ready for a non needle mover. I find it unfortunate because our scouting department is really good and I just don't trust this core to do anything with this cap allocation

You're missing the point. The prospect literally won't be drafted until after the conclusion of the 2026-2027 season, 2.5 years from now. The kid is currently playing midget. It's the furthest thing from trading one of our current, about ready to contribute prospects.

Grebenkin is already in our pipeline and was considered one of our better prospects - he had NHL games already this season.

He had great numbers in the KHL for his age, and then is having a solid first year in the AHL. He likely ends up a better player than Laughton will ever be for us.

Stop trading first rounders unless you are absolutely a legit cup contender that needs one more player to push them over the top. The leafs are not evening in the top 7 teams as a legit cup contender

Another waste of a huge asset for a 3rd line player. What a joke

The following teams have a much better chance of winning the cup this year

Colorado
Florida
Tampa
Dallas
Washington
Winnipeg
Edmonton

All of those teams are better and the leafs are not playing that great right now and their top player is a shell of his former self

Dry your eyes

No you use the picks in the off-season after Marner tries to hold you hostage for 13+. The alternative is you either pay him whatever Ferris demands or you replace him with other overpaid UFAs pushing 30.
So you lose Marner for nothing and use the cap space, multiple first rounders and Cowan/Minten for someone who is marginally better? Is your name Kyle Dubas?

He played 7 NHL games and did nothing. Zero points.

Solid year in the AHL? He has 9 goals and is 8th in Marlies scoring, He's a bad skater and a fringe fourth liner st best

my bad you’re right we should pay Marner 13+ and keep spending assets on mediocre 3rd liners. Florida, Colorado, Tampa, Dallas are the dummies here, why would they trade 1sts so they can get a scrub like Hagel through his prime at 6.5 or a 25 year old Reinhart at 6.5 x 3? Florida made a mistake trading Huberdeau + young D + 1st for Tkachuk when they could have re-signed him and spent that 1st on 1.5 years of a 3C/W.

I'd call him a B prospect. Some might say C.

None of those teams spent multiple firsts and all their prospects for the players you mentioned. I'm not a fan of resigning Marner especially if it's over 12 million/year, but I'm not giving up my entire future for someone who is a minor upgrade.

You act like they traded a guaranteed lottery pick. What they traded will be close to a second rounder so get over it.

Hagel got 2 1sts 2 4ths and 2 C tier prospects, Reinhart got 1st + top goalie prospect, Tkachuk got somewhere in the realm of 3-4 1sts if you liquidated Weegar and Huberdeau into picks right away. There’s good upcoming RFAs on bottomed out teams all the time, some combination of 1sts + prospects is usually how you get them, and you usually at least get a bridge at a cap hit that’s 2/3s of what a comparable UFA will cost.

A first round pick, and Grebyonkin, for a guy who is -42 for his career and comes home to put his feet up like Domi....I pray not. If he even mentions Muskoka in his next couple of interviews I will need a new TV
