Marner is pushing 30, too.
Yeah there’s not many wins in UFA for guys of that tier, you’re paying them big money + NMC until they’re 35.
Marner is pushing 30, too.
You're missing the point. The prospect literally won't be drafted until after the conclusion of the 2026-2027 season, 2.5 years from now. The kid is currently playing midget. It's the furthest thing from trading one of our current, about ready to contribute prospects.
Dry your eyesStop trading first rounders unless you are absolutely a legit cup contender that needs one more player to push them over the top. The leafs are not evening in the top 7 teams as a legit cup contender
Another waste of a huge asset for a 3rd line player. What a joke
The following teams have a much better chance of winning the cup this year
Colorado
Florida
Tampa
Dallas
Washington
Winnipeg
Edmonton
All of those teams are better and the leafs are not playing that great right now and their top player is a shell of his former self
Grebenkin is already in our pipeline and was considered one of our better prospects - he had NHL games already this season.
And the 1st? Nah.A 1st is a top prospect with how bare our farm is. Any player drafted with it likely becomes one of our top prospects.
In essence, we traded two of our top prospects for Laughton.
So you lose Marner for nothing and use the cap space, multiple first rounders and Cowan/Minten for someone who is marginally better? Is your name Kyle Dubas? No you use the picks in the off-season after Marner tries to hold you hostage for 13+. The alternative is you either pay him whatever Ferris demands or you replace him with other overpaid UFAs pushing 30.
He played 7 NHL games and did nothing. Zero points.Grebenkin is already in our pipeline and was considered one of our better prospects - he had NHL games already this season.
He had great numbers in the KHL for his age, and then is having a solid first year in the AHL. He likely ends up a better player than Laughton will ever be for us.

I'd call him a B prospect. Some might say C.Grebenkin is already in our pipeline and was considered one of our better prospects - he had NHL games already this season.

None of those teams spent multiple firsts and all their prospects for the players you mentioned. I'm not a fan of resigning Marner especially if it's over 12 million/year, but I'm not giving up my entire future for someone who is a minor upgrade.my bad you’re right we should pay Marner 13+ and keep spending assets on mediocre 3rd liners. Florida, Colorado, Tampa, Dallas are the dummies here, why would they trade 1sts so they can get a scrub like Hagel through his prime at 6.5 or a 25 year old Reinhart at 6.5 x 3? Florida made a mistake trading Huberdeau + young D + 1st for Tkachuk when they could have re-signed him and spent that 1st on 1.5 years of a 3C/W.
