How the hell do you justify a 2M signing bonus for a 4th liner with no offensive talent

Hawks really need to remove Stanley from contract negotiations

Really? Wake up and just start it all right back up again?

It's simply the way his contract was structured...

His first year of the deal it was 2m base + 1.475m signing bonus.
His second year of the deal it is 1.475m base + 2m signing bonus.
His third year it's 2.3m with no signing bonus.

To me, that structure says the following: 1) Rewarding Kruger for being a good soldier all these years and taking a one-year deal the previous offseason by giving him a lot of real money up front, an advantage the Hawks have in terms of absorbing real dollars like that and 2) thereby making it easier to trade the contract in year 2 and 3 because after June 30th this year there's only $3.7M over 2 seasons the other team has to pay Kruger in real dollars if they trade for him after June 30th.

You realize that he gets paid $2.0 on July 1st then his salary is lower throughout the season. Teams spread out expenses like this all of the time and it is a common operating procedure to spread expenses out for businesses. Example: If I have a month where my inbound freight is going to be low I will buy more supplies such as pallets, etc. so during months where I have high inbound freight expenses. You spread out the expenses to maximize cash.

This comes out of his salary and in not a bonus like a regular pleb gets.

Once again you are freaking out about something you don't understand.

Right. Thus increasing his value. A team would get 2 years of Kruger for 1.85m per year, basically. Which is a pretty damn good deal.

what is more disconcerting is that many still think the SB is still great, b/c of what he accomplished. the thing is they are reaffirning the knowledge, knowing that the hawks are still screwed and yet they debate logic vs wishful thinking.

SB should have had a better grasp of what is the temperature of all the GM's state of thinking. i will still say SB is not good at contract neg and trades.

re contract neg, kruger got overpaid b/c he was a good company soldier and took a below avg salary for 1 yr to help the hawks. now SB pd him back with his contract.

rhetorical question, what other moves will the hawks have to sacrifice in order compete in the playoff next yr.

you make a great analogy but when the team has their back up against the wall, it is wise to start thinking of fixing the problem. the impractical approach of doing business is to do nothing. that is the fundamental thinking running a business, to continue to improve.

How the Hawks spread out the salaries is just fine when you look at it (obviously without having looked at their books). The Hawks are running things the right way financially from a 10,000 ft view. The Hawks run their business just fine.

again the ugly side of hockey. the business side vs the fan side and opinion.

re the business side, the writz family have done a great job.

the sub side of running the hockey team, the product on the ice vs the cost of diminishing rtn of the existing player vs the philosophical appch of it.

Its just fine being forced to lose talent because GM cant manage cap and constantly makes poor decisions with extensions and trades?

He's obviously pretty damn good at managing the cap, actually. Or the Hawks would have been penalized multiple times over the past 7-8 years.... They've been in cap hell basically since the first Cup win and subsequent loss of numerous players from that roster because of the cap.

you realize that he HAS to make these moves. Some end up good (panarin, panik, anisimov, leddy) and some not (daley, seabrook contract, kruger contract, pokka). So sometimes they will get better and sometimes they will get worse but the point of it is they are always in contention. The more times a team puts themselves in contention to win the cup the more times they will.

Guess what they are constantly in contention and will be again this year. and this is all while drafting great.

Saad trade was not a good move and several moves such as losing TT and Danault (Saad) were caused by his own mismanagement of cap with god awful extensions

yup, sweetening many trades to rid themselves of players to fix the cap, esp the great job he has done in the last 2 yrs.

Sp if the "delay" I'm the Kruger trade to Vegas is that Hawks pay him $2 mil pn July 1st and therefore is cheaper in expense to Vegas from July 2nd...my question is which team accounts for the up front $2 million on cap? IF Hawks are attributed it on cap then rally they only save $1million+ change pn cap for this season after dumping him off to Vegas. Hardly makes much sense unless tge pick or player they get back is worth MORE ...that is higher pick from Vegas than wr thought ...because Hawks ate $2 million off his cost .and since this trade will nit hapoen till July 2nd bit means that the draft pick we get is for 2018 notv2017 if we are dealing for a pick ...if we are dealing for a player then what do we get from them for Kruger? Alternatively 8f TVR was so great .. why could Stan not have found 2 team to take him other than Vegas in expansion ...1 team that would have protected him? Answer because no team would protect a #5 D ...Vegas should have known that and so why take Kruger in a combo deal when they were going to get TVR anyway? Maybe prior go their draft they wanted Kruger as their 4C..but now that they have a roster and mire trades coin ,maybe they no longer want Kruger?Still...if Stan got them to bite on Kruger to guarantee they did not lose a chance to draft TVR then McPhee needsctobadd complete the overall deal by trading for Kruger. And waste TVR + Kruger deal cemented before Hossa made the. Big announcement?

Questions...many questions.

Not a good move, but not his fault. Saad priced himself out. The guy got greedy. Period. He wanted a bridge deal the equivalent to Toews and Kane... who are twice the player Saad will ever hope to be. That's insanity. If he had come in at 4m or 4.5m for his bridge deal... he's probably still a Hawk right now and we wouldn't have had to hear about him every other post from you for the past 2 years.

TT was never amounting to anything here... and has been the same mediocrity in Carolina that we expected him to be. Not a loss...

Danault... IDK why you keep beating that dead horse. It was a TDL move while attempting to win the Hawks a cup. It didn't work out. He's not the first GM to make a mistake, nor will he be the last.

Saad would have been affordable and is well worth his cap hit if Stanley had moved on from Seabrook

Stanley decided he would rather have Seabrook + Anisimov instead of Saad + 3-4M defender via trade/FA

It was terrible mistake and Hawks are paying dearly for it

As for TT ,, Hawks were forced to give him away because of Stanley's mistake extension to Bickell

And Stanley decided to extend Kruger and move Danault at deadline. It was foolish move then and made worse by fact he gave away Danault + 2nd for Habs trash

The cap hit is the cap hit. It doesn't change. The actual cash, the 2 million, would be paid by the Hawks, if he's still on the roster July 1. Thus, Vegas would acquire Kruger and his full cap hit but only owe him 1.475 for the rest of the 17-18 season and 2.3 in 18-19. His cap hit doesn't change for either year and Vegas would be responsible for the entire thing.

Seabrook sucks now but trading Seabrook would have closed the window completely. Unless you want Rosi playing top 4 minutes..

The return we got for Saad was just fine. AA produces at the same rate and is cheaper plus he gives us solid 2C that helps maximize Kane's game. Saad is a damn good player but he does not win us a cup in 16 or last season.

As for TT ,, Hawks were forced to give him away because of Stanley's mistake extension to Bickell

No one could have predicted that Bickell would have MS hit. If Bickell's MS does not hit his deal is much better. We saw his potential in the playoffs. Power forwards mature later and chances are Bickell just starting to mature into his game.

You hated TT and now you miss him? Ok.

And Stanley decided to extend Kruger and move Danault at deadline. It was foolish move then and made worse by fact he gave away Danault + 2nd for Habs trash

We were going for the Cup. The trade missed and Q **** the bed with his lineups. This has already been shown to you. Reminder? Mashinter over Weise and Panik.

Not sure if this is the right place, but sounds like the Canes just traded for TVR (awaiting details).

Tell me about him please! He will likely be playing true third pairing minute behind Pesce/Faulk on the right side, to me he seems like an above average third pairing guy but I wanted to ask you guys.

What's his game like? Any comparables? Strengths/weaknesses to his game, etc.

Thanks in advance!
