Speculation: Larkin trade return

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.

I don't even think a 3rd team would change much.

Goalies don't carry huge value so they are not going to get some massive haul worthy of Dylan Larkin by trading Wallstadt. They could trade a guy like Brodin for a package similar to what we gave up for faulk.

Hell, even if they traded both of those guys what are they getting back? a couple of mid to late 1sts and a couple meh prospects?

I don't really see any of that moving the needle in a Larkin-Wild trade unless yzerman is looking for quantity over quality.
If they want Larkin so bad they’ll have to trade Brodin, eriksson ek etc… but I don’t think those guys get the assets we’d want anyways

I don’t see Minnesota as a good trade partner period. If Larkin wants to whine for Minnesota he can come back to Detroit and be quiet

Russo is hilarious saying they won't settle for a lesser center like Trocheck so would wait for maybe Matthews if Larkin doesn't pan out.

Bro you can't afford Larkin, but you'll be able to afford Matthews? Get out of here man.

Two other bits of thought here (just speculation on my part):

Friedman reported through the whole Tkachuk thing with FL, that Staios tried very hard to get players for Tkachuk and FL wasn't budging on that so they settled on picks; I only point this out because OTT is in a similar situation in terms of where their team is, etc. Picks weren't OTT's first choice but Tkachuk's leverage forced OTTs hand here a bit. OTT doesn't want to have to wait for picks to develop into players and why the swapped those picks to ...SJ for Eklund. The point of this is we see all these "First rounds picks!". We value those picks a lot mor\e than cusp/middle of rebuild teams like OTT or DET. They would prefer players or high end prospects over picks and I think that's another thing that Stevie is probably waiting on.

SJ was/is still rumored to actively seeking a their 1D/Anchor on the blue line. I think Petes suggested that SJ inquired about Ed to DET. The issue became they had 2OA which they could score Reid, but they thought Stenberg was the clear 2nd best player in the draft so now they are kind in a weird spot where they are trying balance BOA vs. Need. If they take Stenberg, they don't need Eklund so they can swap Eklund to try to get their D. So dangling Eklund (a good 50pt 23yo winger on cost control) to try to get that D - they ended up nabbing the 9th OA from OTT who as mentioned before got a bunch of picks but wanted a player. Win Win. I say all of this in that these moves make sense in context and how they are playing out.

The Sharks have as many top 10 picks in the last 4 seasons as we've had during Yzerman's entire tenure. We have had one more top 11 pick during our entire rebuild than they have had in the last 4 years.

No wonder we suck.
Yeah as pointed out when they moved up to 2nd overall this year. That's now four top five picks the last five drafts. San Jose had like a 5% chance to move up to 2nd and did. We had better odds and just always fell back year after year.

We had one top five pick.

Here's an obscure fun fact that not many people know:

San Jose was a worse hockey team than us in the most recent season that was played. By a wide margin

We had 6 more points, but more importantly, who's trajectory do you like more?

SJ, Toronto, Edmonton, Buffalo, and Chicago can all go f**k themselves.

We had two more wins.
6 standings points
24 gap in goal differential
They got to play in the same division as Vancouver, Calgary, and Seattle

If we're going to be envious teams, maybe we should start by looking at the Stanley Cup playoffs that were just broadcast?

We might need to change Yzerman on the phone with a face with a robbery to Yzerman with his arms crossed into a meme
With the flurry of movement yesterday evening it certainly is frustrating not seeing anything happen. I do still think the right move is to wait out Larkin, and get an increase in acceptable teams. And I wonder how tied Debrincat's and Kane's decision making is tied to the return. Furthermore, potentially moving Copp would certainly be tied to the return, as we would need him if it's a more future based deal. Faulk, I would love to recoup some assets after what we sent to STL at the deadline. But that then possibly leaves ASP needing to be sheltered all season again. But with it clearly being a sellers market, maybe you go for it anyways.
TDLR: My head is still spinning and I just want something to make sense.
