I doubt he will want to sign this summer. You never know I guess but realistically he will probably want to atleast back up a strong rookie season with a good start to next season.

If you have time use it. Better to play out the season in 25/26 to get a better read. Almost all of the kids who got signed early on D, Power, Sanderson, Faber, etc would their deals be much different had their clubs waited for their elc to expire after 2 full nhl season vs the 1? Seider played all 3 of his elc years and his deal was in the same ballpark.

he and his agent are pretty shrewd, look at how they burned a year off his elc. i think he's going to bet on himself and wait until his current deal is over to negotiate. with two strong seasons, a good agent and being a fan favorite in montreal i think he's going to get paid.
Not sure if it’s shrewd, most good NCAA guys coming out, get that deal.

I would bridge him honestly if he wants more than 7, MTL already has most of their core locked into decent deals so I don't think it's worth the risk going long term with Hutson
Why bridge him if the managements mentality has been lock in long term. And we don’t have one D signed max. Let alone the first D in ten years who pulls

Since Lane Hutson burned a year of his ELC playing 2 games at the end of last season, he will be entering the last year of his contract in 2025-2026 and will be able to sign a contract extension on July 1st.

I am convinced Habs management is smart and will sign him right away to the big bucks if, of course, Lane Hutson is interested to do so at that time.

If he keeps his play at this current level, what should that contract look like?

My guess is 8y x 7.5 millions... Too much? Not enough? What do you guys think?
Kind of early isn't it?

Some surprising numbers in this thread. Watching this one in relation to Luke Hughes, different of course but two young D getting paid potentially this offseason.

Takes two to tango. Signing as soon as he’s eligible does the Habs a favour but does himself a disservice. He could be looking for a bridge deal to improve himself further and command more money when the time is up. We won’t know what his preference is until contract talks start heating up.
The other side of the coin: a guaranteed $60M versus $12M and the risk of a serious injury...

If you don’t think Hughes is gonna be hesitant about handing Hutson a wealth contract already, you’re likely not being honest about the situation.. He may ultimately be forced to, but he’ll wake up drenched some nights.

He’s fun to watch but are you putting him on the ice, the last 10 minutes of 1 goal playoff games? As long as that answer remains “no” it’s a big chance you’re taking. If you’re answering “yes” to that question, you just can’t be taken seriously.

Ultimately you roster and ice a team to win Stanley Cups. Not to be super-extra entertaining. You can guarantee Hughes is already searching for a long-term partner, who’ll have at least above average wheels, but is as defensive as they come, to protect Hutson better.

He’s also not 18-19 years old. He’ll be 21 in a month or so. He’s had a couple of years to try bulking up. It’s just almost impossible with a small frame. Nothing to do with height. He could be cut like Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it’s not gonna make much difference with his slender build. He’s nothing like Quinn Hughes in that regard.

That generally equals lots of injuries playing in the NHL. Once again though, they might be forced to hand him one of these wealth contracts. I’m gonna guess they try to bridge him though, if only to protect themselves. Is it fair to him? Yea, it is. If he can’t be trusted to be on the ice during close playoff games, how do you justify giving 9-10% of your cap to him?

It’s always scary giving dmen who need protection, one of these wealth contracts. Byrum doesn’t have one yet, and he’s up after this year. In Hutson’s case, it’s hard to see how this issue is ever NOT going to be an issue. With others you can work on things. Buffalo and Philly are trying to work on those deficiencies with Byrum and Drysdale. Philly is literally breaking Drysdale down, and rebuilding his game.

He’s gonna be in his 23-24 year old season when that new contract takes effect. They’re likely to stall as long as they can before making a final decision. Nobody at this size has EVER had a long, successful career. Their body breaks down. He’s gonna be too young and too competitive to LTIR out with lingering injuries that will start piling up though. Beau Bennett is a great example and he was a bigger player. Not a dman either. The players with slender builds, who can’t put on the weight, start piling up injuries. In Beau’s case the injuries started before he ever played an NHL game, but for years, he was the most talented 1991 born NA player.

So while it’s easy for fans who love stat sheets and exciting play, to just blindly endorse handing him a wealth contract, there’s this big question mark with him, and he hasn’t even been through an NHL schedule yet. Teams will adjust to his strengths as well. They’ll start matching up, to hit and wear him down.

Bottom line, they’re gonna try waiting as long as possible before handing him $65+ million. If it ends up costing them an extra $10 million by waiting, it’s likely a chance they’ll take.

Will he be signing before the new CBA? If not, They may need to negotiate in a Lane Hutson exception, if before the next CBA, I can see anything less than a max deal

Back up the brinks truck. He can clearly score at a .67 ppg pace at a young age. Doesn’t matter if you can play him in the top 4 and expect to be competitive but boy he can shake and head fake.

8x11.5m similar to Karlsson.

the risk goes both ways. if he gets offered a contract in the sanderson/faber mold he would sign it. 60+ million guaranteed money is a lot and none of us would turn it down because 12m sounds fine we MAYBE can make good on it on a second contract.

The market is fairly consistent, 8M give or take a few hundred k in either direction.

It just comes down to whether the Canadiens are able to enforce Suzuki's cap hit as their ceiling, or whether he exceeds it.
agents don't use cap hit. they use cap percentage.
