Hockey has evolved to the point where advanced statistics dictate the direction of a lot of coaching staffs and management. The fact remains, despite his small stature and non-elite skating, Lane Hutson heavily tilts the ice in his team’s favour. They are much more likely to be controlling the play and have possession in the opponent’s zone, with far more scoring chances for than against, when he’s on the ice.

So will he be as good at closing gaps and battling in his own corner as Reinbacher and Guhle? Obviously not. But can they create offence out of absolutely nothing to the extent that Huston can? Not even close.

He’ll have his spot in the NHL, warts or not.

Advanced stats absolutely do not dictate the direction of coaching staffs.

They are used as one resource among many to provide as much information as possible.

Why is tihs kid playing D instead of a winger???
Hutson’s greatest strength is skating edge work + vision / anticipation - D allows him to “roam on the ice” - there’s been a huge push in the US youth hockey elite development programs towards position less hockey (can’t speak for Canada or elsewhere), Hutson is a product of that concept which North Jersey Avalanche elite program started instilling a few years back, MSL did same w Mid Fairfield Rangers (Trevor Zegras’ father runs hockey ops), Boston Jr Eagles (Hughes coached for a while) then started picking up momentum and is growing w Greater New Haven Warriors, Mass/Con United, CT Chiefs etc

I’m intrigued to watch how MSL embeds Hutson’s game into his concept of Habs hockey @ the NHL level no less, it’s going to be fascinating to watch play out IMO

Cole has produced similarly to his brother up until this season and is a better skater as well as being stronger on his skates so to say that there is no comparison is nothing short of ridiculous. He is universally ranked as a top 15 prospect whereas Lane was never ranked nearly as high, perhaps Lane's success has something to do with that but there is still a huge gap in how they are perceived at the same age.

Nobody is giving up a legitimate NHL 1st liner for Lane Hutson lol. I doubt anyone is willing to give up a top forward prospect for him either but if they were I would absolutely consider it.
Why the hell would we want to trade him?

No f***ing thank you.

Perfect segue for a thought I just had.

The Habs have a successful prospect? Let's trade him for something.
The Habs have a player developing at a normal pace? This guy sucks, worst pick in franchise history, we are doomed.
It’s f***ing insane.

We’ve got this kid who’s breaking records and some folks can’t stop talking about his “warts.”

Yes, he’ll have some challenges along the way but there’s so much to be excited about here. And the whole’he won’t be able to do that in the NHL’ is not something we write about other team’s prospects- only our own.

That was the shit they said about Cooley in his draft year and now he's all anyone talks about or wants.

It's just crazy.
