I never believed in him.

I understand the buzz about Hutson, great stats last year, nice skills and IQ is very good, but at 5'09" and 160 lbs he won't be a first pair D. Impossible, unless he would be the Gretzky of his era as a defenseman. At this point he projects at best as PP specialist that will be protected at 5 on 5 by the coach. Look at Sean Farrell, he had great stats in the NCAA and USHL, dominant stats, but he is also small and he struggles at the pro level. That being said, if he ends up at 5'11". and 180 lbs, it will be another strory.
True but worth mentioning that Sean Farrell can't do what Hutson does. Not even close

Quinn Hughes is only 5'10 and is a first paring D, Ryan Ellis was also arguably a top pairing guy also a 5'10. Even Francis Bouillon at 5'8 showed you can be small but still effective defensively. Obviously Hutson's won't play like Bouillon but it just goes to show you don't have to be a Gretzky to be effective as a small D.

Hughes is listed at 180 lbs and is faster than Hutson. So Hutson needs to add 20 pounds and increase his speed. Good luck. Also, as good as Hughes is, I doubt you can win a cup with him because the rules are not the same in the playoffs. Bouiilon was a little tank at 200 lbs. The closest comparison is Jared Spuregeon at 165 lbs and that's another D that won't make you win in the playoffs. Ryan Ellis was not a first pairing D, and his career was over at 30 because of injuries.

He got humbled this week-end. That big lost against his brother las night was probably what he needed. Let's see if he come back stronger and learn how to use his linemate more instead of trying to dekes everyone on the other team.
Thats not my issue with Hutson, offensively he looks like a young PK Subban, highly dynamic, imprevisible and tremendously talented, while I agree that he tries to do much at times, he still generates alot of chaos and scoring chances. The real issue right now is his defensive game, he gets lost positionally, poor gap control, 0 physiucality, its simple, he just doesnt compete in his own zone at all. He clearly needs to come back at the basics of the position, better defending will lead to better transition, less time stuck in your own zone, less scoring chances against and more possession time. He doesnt need to be perfect, just put as much energy, focuss and pride as you do offensively.

It’d be great if he does this but it’s not a requirement. Even if he’s not as good as Hughes… not many are.

I watched the clip of that game, about 15 mins worth. People here are talking like he looked like crap. That’s not what I saw. It wasn’t a mistake free game but he generated a bunch of chances as usual.

Yeah, he needs to gain some strength but that goes for a lot of prospects. I agree he’s not a blue chip star but o think people are overblowing his ‘shortcomings’.

Lane will be just fine !!!
Svaboda was a blade of grass and he played when they actually had physical contact in hockey

The college teams doesn’t give 100% effort against the NTDP. It’s an exhibition game

Petr Svoboda was 6'01" and 190 lbs. 4 inches deficit and 30 pounds. Not comparable at all.

When svoboda first came up he was 165 pounds soaking wet - I don't think he was ever 190 pounds not when he was playing
