I don’t think you can compare Hutson to anyone. His skating might not be as good as other small defenseman, but on the other hand I don’t think I have ever seen so much deception in a defenseman. In that sense, he’s basically Patrick Kane on D

It doesn't matter where you or anyone else was at a certain age. Hughes has been bigger than Hutson at every age but size isn't the real issue with this comparison as it only slightly magnifies the enormous gap in skating ability between the two players. Perhaps if Hutson was bigger and stronger than Hughes than one could try and form an argument that might begin to offset the skating advantage for Hughes. When the size issue is also in Hiughes' favour albeit not by a huge margin it all but eliminates the comparison.
That is why our kid was drafted much lower.

I’ll make an outside the box comparison, weight-wise: Pavel Datsyuk. No one wanted him because he was skinny and small AF. I recall reading that teams had no interest scouting him because of that factor alone.

Our kid dropped in the draft because of height, weight and skating. If he makes as we hope he does, and excels, he will become the exception to the rule and will have made many scouts look like idiots. Just like when some did not care about Pavel.

Why not? Adding mass becomes much easier with age. I see no reason why he could not reach 185, unless it's detrimental to his game.

There are plenty of people under 5'10" who can not add enough lean mass to reach 185, especially athletes that can not compromise flexibility/agility/quickness etc. This is the correct answer....the incorrect answer is "because some can do it then why can't everyone do it". Lane has made zero gains in mass over the last calendar year and that is not exactly a promising trend that will lead to 185 as some would like him to reach. He is incredibly skinny with twiggy legs which is the most difficult body type to build up. People with naturally skinny legs and butt often can never really gain mass in those areas without the aid of steroids.

Like I have often stated , his body type is just genetically that of a very slim athlete and he will need to compensate mostly with skating improvements where more significant gains are more likely to be realized. The obsession with his size and his growth plates appears to be a wasted topic at this time as he is going to be undersized and we should all be more concerned about the measures that he is or is not taking to offset this disadvantage.

Not sure the people thinking that Hutson’s size is an issue realize he’s playing in the NCAA with guys who are every bit as big as the NHL. It’s not a junior league.
It will be an issue. I mean he has to play a finesse game not a power game for sure. He will knock zero people off the puck so he has to be crafty.

I think he has the talent to do that but I hope The Habs take their time with him.

Is there any indication that he is leaving school this year and signing?

Is that a good thing? I hear all the time how atrocious Kane is defensively.
We’re about to figure out! Nobody’s expecting Vlasic out there. If his offensive output can outmatch his defensive issues, we might be due for another Matheson love-hate relationship

Unfortunately so many can not grasp that, they want it only one way, that's not how it works.

Just as it is for Quinn Hughes in the playoffs, yes it’ll likely be an issue for Hutson IN THE PLAYOFFS…

I’m good with Hutson doing his thing in the regular season.

“Some players get you to the playoffs, and others get you through the playoffs”

How about we make it in first and let the situation play itself out?

Yes, Kent Hughes himself said they were signing him when his year ends.

For a rookie Hughes was pretty good the one time the nucks went in playoffs.

The main difference in hockey in the season vs the playoffs is the refs put the whistles away so forwards tend to get harassed more often etc... and the game speeds up. Not sure either of those are going to really be an issue for him...

Not really. He was pretty average.

He was well above average from an agility/4 way directional skater perspective while his straight ahead speed was closer to average.......overall absolutely an above average skater and much better than Lane at the same age.

The difference with Matheson is he has every physical tool that is required to shut down elite scorers but his decision making is troublesome at times. Hutson doesn't have the tools to do the job in his own end and it will be a huge challenge for him to even become anything close to a competent defender on a Cup contender.

He might find a way to do it and I wouldn't bet against him but the blind apologetic narrative around here is a bit much.

I think it’s overstating it to say he doesn’t have the tools to be an effective defender. He will have challenges, yes. As an example he’s never going to be great at clearing the net, but neither was Andrei Markov. He will have to adapt.

His strength will lie in transitioning out of the zone once he’s got the puck. Not all blueliners are cut from the same cloth. His size will hinder him, his smarts and competitiveness will not. There are tons of big strong guys who get hemmed into their own end. I suspect he’s going to be great at transitioning defense to offense and that’s a coveted skill.

Celebrini will win it

That seems like a lock...

I'm curious to see if Hutson locks down a top 3 or not. If he doesn't, I suspect it'll be the reverse halo effect of playing with the eventual winner in Celebrini (voters shying away from putting 2 teammates into top 3)
