Lane Hutson Burgeoning Star Watch

All small players are not created equal. I think Hutson's size is precisely why he's able to do what he does.

I've heard too many times that he would have gone first overall if he were 6'2". Yeah, maybe, but it's doubtful we'll ever see a bigger guy that can play like him.
true

but he's not small, he's short

thus he is the short king

Truly, other players are just fat. Hutson has the optimal hockey body.

The first 20 games of the season of no Hutson on the powerplay probably cost the team 4 to 8 points in the standings, and cost Hutson at least the same amount of power play points.

He was on pp2, which was doing well. PP2 was scoring as many goals as pp1 at that time.
PP1 did not have Laine, and they were struggling.
If Hutson was on pp1, he would've improved it, but the difference in pp points probably wouldn't have been much.

Signing long term for anything short of 12 million would be incredibly stupid from Hutson - that's still 16 million he'd be leaving on the table which is generational wealth that is too much to leave on the table.

9-10 million aav probably gets you a 4-5 year deal for him.
He’s an rfa, he’s not going to get a ufa salary, secondly no agent is going to recommend he signs a 5 year deal hoping to make bank during the next one, too many risks.

PP2 was doing well when Hutson was on it and then when Hutson went to PP1 it started doing well, hmm...

Sometimes a defencemen comes along that shows who really understands hockey and hockey iq and exposes the people who don't understand hockey at all.

The Karlsson Hughes Hutson pipeline of exposing HF.
Stanley Cups = 0

All things aside, I'm a fan of teams getting players according to their style of play and strengths. Too early to tell what Hutson will be long term. But he looks to be more of an offensive defenseman and then Montreal have to play very attacking minded with that time he is on the ice, thus structure their group like that.

Idk if Montreal will put together that overall team build to win yet, they got interesting pieces, as many do.

Makar/Hughes both signed 6 year deals, Hughes at 7.85 million and Makar at 9 million - both during a much more flat cap era. 10 million long term is unrealistic for what he has shown, you guys are crazy for think so too.

The talk in Montreal right now. Is that there is no way Hutson accept to re-sign for only 10 millions for 8 years.

Im a big fan of Elite Prospects but this is dropping the ball hard.

He isnt just developing into an Elite Defenceman, hes BURGEONING!
He is becoming Hughes 2.0. I really like the player and hope he is a Hab for a long time. The 3 dman I like in this league is Hughes, Makar and Hutson. They are the next generation of defensemen that are elite offensively while being able to deke and dangle like an elite forward.

I think he will sign for 8 million but maybe for 3 or 4 years and then sign a big contract after. So they would probably go for a bridge deal, safe for both parties rather than a long big contract. Usually 2nd contracts for these type of players are bridge contracts.
