Yeah and unless he can one time a shot ricocheting off shinpads, it wouldn't have made a difference if Matheson had kept his PP1 spot

The talk in Montreal right now. Is that there is no way Hutson accept to re-sign for only 10 millions for 8 years.
He is becoming Hughes 2.0. I really like the player and hope he is a Hab for a long time. The 3 dman I like in this league is Hughes, Makar and Hutson. They are the next generation of defensemen that are elite offensively while being able to deke and dangle like an elite forward.
I think he will sign for 8 million but maybe for 3 or 4 years and then sign a big contract after. So they would probably go for a bridge deal, safe for both parties rather than a long big contract. Usually 2nd contracts for these type of players are bridge contracts.

PP2 had like 7 pp goals, and PP1 had like 9 goals.

Are you really going to argue that Laine wouldn't have helped the pp if Hutson wasn't there?
Yeah, it makes a ton of sense too when you consider how fast he's improved defensively + the fact that he's having one of the best rookie defensemen seasons ever - 10 million in this salary cap environment is just too low for a player of his caliber on a long term deal even with him being an RFA, it just is.
I'm arguing that Hutson's promotion was a bigger factor in PP1's success than the addition of Laine.
Laine being there is a bit of a double edged sword - he's obviously one of the best shooting threats in the league, but it's also resulted in Montreal's PP becoming predictable since the mandate is "Get it to Laine at all costs". Without him there would likely be a bit more variety - enough to offset losing his 1T threat? I don't know, but I know I'd take him off of PP1 over Hutson any day.

The counter argument which is also valid is that if you want a competitive team you need all the players to accept slightly less so they can keep all their talent together and compete. If you take look at the Habs payroll they established a maximum value with Nick Suzuki for all players they re-signed. None made more. The argument is that Hutson would accept slightly less than his true value and establish his contract as the new limit.
Florida and Tampa Bay did that to keep their core players. It's quite possible that Hutson might also accept this so to Habs can compete.

The strategy before that wasn't much different, it was to pass it to Caufield.
Hutson was also predictable on the pp in the sense that he wasn't going to shoot. He had 26 shots in 24 games during the period he was on pp2, and likely very few of them came on the pp.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but for someone who naysayers say can't defend, is currently leading the NHL for defensemen in plus minus since the 4 nations cup.
Also, he's the only player to ever get 60 assists in his first 80 games (counting last season) besides Connor McDavid.
